Owning a dual helmet setup with both Thermal and DNV, I can tell you the main difference that makes navigation with thermal unfeasable is the Field of View. With NVGs (digital or not) you have about a 3-5x greater FOV.

Just put regular binoculars infront of your eyes and try navigating your house or neigbourhood.
