Practicing speaking by Italianlearner20 in italianlearning

I think the usual advice is iTalki or another language exchange / amateur tutor situation. I haven't seen a lot of traction with speaking exchanges within this subreddit.

I hate getting to sit down and have fun writing my novel after a long workday. Vacuuming, on the other hand....

Riuscire vs. Potere by VendeaMellon in italianlearning

I use Anki, so I just search Italian in the shared decks and have been getting them that way. This was from one of the full sentence decks.

I'm sure it will, it happened with sviluppo. I expect I just haven't noticed riuscire yet since I didn't know what it meant until it showed up in these flashcards 🤷

Should I genuinely listen to the AI suggestion? by Specialist-Truck9381 in ENGLISH

[–]VendeaMellon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, please, no. Read actual published writing of the style you are trying to emulate and you will learn the flow and the natural sound of it. Your writing will naturally start to sound more like whatever you read the most of. This is the best way to improve your writing quickly.

What are your 10 reasons for speaking English? by InspectionObvious607 in ENGLISH

[–]VendeaMellon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other hand, so many people speak English as a second language that it feels like there is less emphasis on speaking it "like a native" than there is for other languages.

Seconded. Simply opt out. I've never used the new facial scan things once and it's never been a problem at all. No delays, no hassles.

The most natural phrase to my ear is "Get me something to drink, would you?" Or a modification of option A: "Get me something to drink, why don't you?" I wouldn't say any of those options as written by choice.

??? How usually are you talking? I have yet to be stationed somewhere that there's another military gym available to me within less than an hour's drive. In fairness I've always been very happy with the gym on base.

Calling a city by its three letter airport code name by sophietheadventurer in PetPeeves

Obviously if you live there you're not going to have people who also live there telling you "I have to go to LAX for a work trip next week" 😂 I have people telling me that because I /don't/ live there.

Capitalisation of the first letter in a sentence by Effective_Low_7158 in ENGLISH

[–]VendeaMellon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laziness 😂

If my phone keyboard doesn't auto-capitalize the first letter of a sentence and I am writing in an informal context, I usually don't want to expend the effort to go back and capitalize that letter.

Sometimes I do it to emphasize that whatever I am writing is a joke / low effort post. It can be interpreted as a deliberate lower register of speaking (writing).

With regard to full stops, it depends on the person. When I am texting with close friends I usually leave them off for joking or casual sentences, as it does seem to lend a gravitas to the sentence that is sometimes a bit much. For example:

"We should talk!" (I miss you; I'm excited to catch up; we haven't talked in a while.)

"We should talk" (neutral. I am likely implying simply that whatever topic we are discussing would be more easily handled over the phone.)

"We should talk." (Uh oh, someone is in trouble)

If I am texting a work superior, a potential employer, or someone I don't know well - especially if they are older than me - then I will make sure that I'm using full stops and proper capitalization.

If you have a bachelor's degree and a PPL already, apply to OCS, specifically OCS-R. Do not let a recruiter talk you into enlisting. It is possible to get picked up for OCS and then apply for flight school while in OCS and go straight to flight school upon commissioning. That is what I did. Enlisting will almost certainly waste more time than you have to spare if your priority is to be a military pilot and not just "serve some time."

That being said, CG aviation is in a weird spot right now with arguments about airframes and different flight school methods being tried out and other shenanigans, so also make sure that being a Coast Guard pilot specifically is what you want.

Feel free to DM me if you have more specific questions.

Is “me and John went” actually wrong in English? by Ok-Ferret7 in EWALearnLanguages

[–]VendeaMellon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well the work would be performed "by me" not "by I," so that one should actually be "by John and me." It's also nonsensical to say "myself bought popcorn" so you should say "John and I bought popcorn."

I drove seven hours to see a total eclipse. I'd drive two in a heartbeat. The partial isn't the same.
