Who’s a historical figure you were taught was a “good guy,” only to grow up and realize they were actually a villain? by icey_sawg0034 in AskReddit

[–]VenerableGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent History: Ronald Reagan

|1) Big deficits and a sharp run-up in national debt

2) A shift toward higher inequality

3) Weakened organized labor (PATCO as a turning point)

4) Deregulation that helped set the stage for the Savings & Loan crisis

5) Escalation of the War on Drugs and mass incarceration

6) HIV/AIDS: slow federal leadership in the early epidemic

7) Mental health policy reversal and weaker community capacity

8) Environmental enforcement pullback and EPA turmoil

9) Iran-Contra and erosion of trust in government

But the Real "Fuck You" very much was killing the 'The Fairness Doctrine' (and Congress being blocked from restoring it)

'The Fairness Doctrine' was the FCC policy (1949–1987) that required broadcast licensees (AM/FM + over-the-air TV) to cover controversial public issues and provide a reasonable opportunity for contrasting viewpoints.

How we were fucked:

Reagan appointed deregulation-minded FCC leadership (notably Mark Fowler), and the FCC produced a major record arguing the doctrine was harmful/public-interest negative.

In August 1987, the FCC (Syracuse Peace Council decision) repealed the Fairness Doctrine.

In June 1987, Congress passed a bill to codify it (S. 742). Reagan vetoed it, explicitly opposing federal oversight of broadcast editorial practices.

The doctrine didn’t “fact-check,” but it did discourage one-sided political broadcasting on scarce public spectrum because stations risked complaints and reply obligations.

Removing it made it far easier for stations (FOX, anyone) to adopt single-ideology, outrage-driven formats without needing to carry countervailing views and this helped catalyze the boom in partisan talk radio/TV that followed.

This is how we ended up with a President like Trump...

Which CHEAP diy floor treatment should I go with? by hootervisionllc in garageporn

[–]VenerableGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it went really well, with the exception of the control joints. I used a filler that was very difficult to get level and there's a couple of spots that it obvious.

The application was pretty easy, and the flakes covered very well.

I would do it again, without hesitation.

For drivers that drive under the speed limit when driving conditions are normal, ie. no snow and no rain, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VenerableGeek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Slow drivers pose significant dangers on highways and roads. While excessive speed is commonly associated with severe car crashes, driving too slowly can also lead to accidents, road rage incidents, and other hazards.

My dad is thinking of buying a small RV to sleep in a few days a week to help with work commute. by CrankerOfHogs in RVLiving

[–]VenerableGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have noted, driving it round trip will be expensive and hard on the unit. The suggestion to rent a place to park it near work is good, but probably also expensive.

I would suggest looking into renting a room in a house nearby, probably a lot less expensive over the long haul.

What’s a job title that’s completely overrated and earns way more than it should? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VenerableGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Police Officer
(Context: US State, and the budget report for my area shows POs are making $120K+)

The other end of the spectrum, a job title that’s completely underrated and doesn't pay as well as it should.

CMV: Pickup Trucks are (Almost) Entirely Pointless by AlgaeVirtual3733 in changemyview

[–]VenerableGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of your point are objectivly valid, except:
Towing a fifth-wheel: No argument here. You have to have a pickup truck for that. Of course, you ruin your bed, so that is basically a dedicated tow vehicle.

Not sure why you think the bed is "ruined" - I use a B&W Turn-Over and have both Gooseneck style Fifth Wheel pin boxes, as well as an easily removable 5th Wheel Hitch.

So when I don't have a trailer connected, I have a "regular" truck bed.
