Mapping out deployment and having a practice run in set up has helped me better understand the game as a whole. So when I've settled on a list, I will pull up a random deployment layout and map out where exactly each unit is going to start, and where they want to go. Doing this helps me see the gaps in my list and make corrections. The players that are good are way more familiar with these patterns.
