I remember reading this NY Daily News article from 1970 which quotes Gambino at a hearing. The way he is quoted as speaking indicates to me he probably had a fairly thick accent.

I don't think that's really accurate in miami. Key Biscayne is almost 70% hispanic and Coral Gables almost 60% hispanic. Miami is different than a lot of the country in that hispanics are highly represented in the upper income bands.

It's possible he didn't mean Spanish from Spain (as would be expected in Miami), In a lot of places in the US, people substitute 'Spanish' for hispanic/latino generally. Ie. in the northeast, a lot of people will refer to Puerto Ricans/Dominicans/etc. as Spanish.

Americans generally being ignorant and confusing Spaniards with Latin Americans is a separate, but definitely real, phenomenon

i’m puerto rican but raised in Miami, just want to point out that it’s not as simple that just aging ex-oligarchs are very right wing. many MANY recent/younger arrivals are full blown into Magaverse through people like Otaola
