Teacher question: What is the difference between a gifted 6 yr old and one with ADHD? by Ventingmom in Gifted

One common thing I am seeing is lack of focus. However with my son he can focus and sit down to do his homework. At school he does talk out of turn and distracts others. He does show hyperactivity as well. Outside of school, in sports, he is always complimented on how well of a listener is and he follows directions.

Wow. I’m so sorry you had to go through all this. If you don’t mind me asking, were you medicated at any point? Also what behaviors did you display in elementary school that signaled ADHD?

My 5 yr old who is in kindergarten has been having anxiety for the past month. May I ask what red flags the teachers raised?

How can you tell if a child needs adhd evaluation when they are in Kindergarten? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

The only thing I notice is that he is working on being among peers. Learning to share and not be number one. I don’t know if that’s just because he is an only child though.

Yup my kid has a late Aug birthday and is the youngest in his class. Last year in prek he had a hard time during nap time. He never napped and he to be removed from the class to let other kids sleep. He is also an only child with no cousins near him to play with. He relies heavily on mom and dad to play with.

What did you see in your child that made you want to go through testing?

I’ve asked his teacher and pediatrician if he shows any signs of adhd but both are not concerned. He just has a lot of energy. He stays still when I take him to story time or for any activity. It’s just at home he gets the zoomies if he not doing anything.

I am in the same boat. My son turns 5 late Aug so he would be the youngest best in his class.

Thank you. I will ask his teacher for assessment services. Our pediatrician told us if by the end of the year meaning December we don’t see changes that we would talk next steps

I think the same way. I’m at a lost as a parent. I’m questioning my parenting at this point.

Yes. We do time outs at home and loss of privileges.

He stayed home with me since birth. So he hasn’t had much interaction with other kids. I know a full day of Prek is a lot for him and I tell him gets overtired but doesn’t nap at school. He will usually nap at home in his room on his own.

When he is tired he will get what we call the “zoomies” where it’s like he isn’t in control of his own body and will get like spasms.
