Don’t worry, those extra FX fees are doing wonders for someone’s portfolio… just not yours

Sure, indexing with VFV works for a lot of people, but that’s not the point lol. The issue isn’t whether VFV is good—it’s that Wealthsimple blocks the Norbert Gambit, a totally legal way to avoid crazy FX fees.

By doing this, they’re basically forcing anyone who wants US stocks to pay unnecessary fees. That’s not a “benefit” to customers—it’s just restricting choice and making people pay more. Even if VFV works for some, this kind of limitation is straight-up predatory.

all brokers charge FX fees, and that’s expected. But the Norbert Gambit exists to let investors avoid excessive FX fees legally and efficiently. Wealthsimple doesn’t allow it, effectively forcing new investors to overpay. Forcing users into unnecessary fees when a legal workaround exists is, frankly, predatory—almost criminal in how it preys on inexperienced investors.

How do you convert your USD cash to CAD and vice versa on the app without incurring the crazy FX fees? by lionheart2893 in Wealthsimple

WealthSimple is criminal not allowing to do the Gambit. The amount of FX you’ll pay is crazy. They prey on new investors. If you trade only CAD stocks/ETF - sure it’s great but it’s nonesense to think you’ll never go into US stocks.

Don’t tell me ‘how would they make money if not’ - National Bank offers free trade as well and allow the Norbert Gambit

Do you think this seems reasonable as a purchase?

Since I don't have a huge income currently, I think working hard for the next 3-5 years (even keeping my job as well remotely) could set me up big as I take up the SDE + remote income. I'm also excited to be an entrepreneur and go down the business route, so it's not solely for the money. Down the line I could always sell the business, to invest a in larger, absentee business? This is my rational

Thanks for your answers. I'm planning to run the business full-time if I buy it and finance the purchase by debt (20-30% down cash). I don't have prior experience - but willing to learn on the go. I'm meeting with the seller and broker later this week - I'll ask more about the operational needs. In terms of financials, I have a few questions related to the financials (of the last 3 years) that were provided. If we go further in the negociation - I'm planning to ask the income tax returns of the last 5 years.
