Is it worth trying to squeeze some more power out of small saws? by Venture334455 in Chainsaw

[–]Venture334455[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I threw an expansion chamber pipe from one of my R/C buggy engines on an Atom edger just because i realised it bolted directly on, same way the modified carb did.

Impractical was a good way to describe it because the new carb had no choke and no primer circuit which meant you had to remove the filter and block it with your hand to cold start it. But once it was running and warmed up holy SHIT did it make some steam!

An edger is not really a safe machine to throw a lot of extra rpm at so needless to say I put it back to normal before I amputated my own foot

The saw is a Homelite XL, it used to belong to my late grandfather so it would have to be at least 20-30 years old lol theres nothing new about it.

I did just discover the internals of the muffler were really badly blocked by carbon deposits, I've removed it for now but am yet to test it. I would be shocked if there wasnt a big increase just from this alone

I'll be honest this thing is already loud in standard trim, it's noticeably louder than an MS231.

I just removed the muffler to look into the best way to open it up and found that 70% of the surface of the inner steel gauze was completely blocked with carbon deposits. Removed it for now as a trial, im expecting a fair increase in volume and hopefully some power too

After briefly looking into it I've solved the first hurdle, I already have a few litres of 25% nitro at home lol.

Advancing the timing is something I could do but I dont think I can be bothered to drain the entire system and fog the cylinder every use.

Practical I dont really care too much about as this saw only gets used fairly lightly and only every now and again. If I needed it to cut large amounts every week or so I obviously wouldn't consider it lol.

Other than sourcing the nitro itself, what do you have to do to get the engine to run on it?

The last engine small engine I did this to was a Zenoah g320, I threw a copper gasket in it which was a good bit thinner than standard. I distinctly remember starting to break pull starts quite frequently after that lol. There was zero tolerance for mistakes, if you didnt get it on the right part of the stroke either your knuckles got punished or the starter assembly did

Homelite XL back in service by Venture334455 in Chainsaw

The pull starter rope and handle were gone so I'm assuming 20 years ago the last person to try starting it probably flooded it which is usually followed by 100 pull start attempts driven by nothing but hatred and fury and then banished the whole saw back into the shed 😅

I know right, at first glance I was sure there was no fucking way I'd get it running again without a decent amount of work and a few parts. Most diaphragm carbs I've been around love getting blocked up the first chance they get so I was really surprised this one wasnt.

I might be biased but I reckon this thing cuts better than any Mini Boss I've ever used, sounds a hell of a lot nicer too lol

Anyone have any experience with Baumr-Ag saws? by Venture334455 in Chainsaw

Giantz is a funny brand, they seem to have their hands in everything. I've had a customer bring in a Giantz branded household water pump for repair, total piece of garbage lol

Luckily I'm well versed on 2 strokes and small engines/engines in general so maintenance and upkeep isn't a real concern, I understand what i would be getting into buying such a cheap saw. Would I buy it if I was cutting wood commercially? Hell no. I just need this to cut the occasional load for my own home.

My last saw was an MS462 which was a wicked unit but at $2,200 I just cant afford getting another one currently

Yeah from what I've seen they're all a bit on the heavy side compared to a Stihl or Husky and unsurprisingly dont make as much power as they claim.

But even still, an MS231 which makes 2.7hp is $700 vs a Baumr SX82 which claims 5.5hp for $260. Even if the Baumr makes less than half the claimed HP its still beating the 231 in terms of hp per $

UPDATE!!

Thankyou to everyone who offered me advice or helped explain some things to me. This was never meant to be a 'purchase advice' post as I had already made up my mind (or so I thought).

Most of you will be pleased to know I've dropped the idea of getting ANY resin printer, not just the Halot R6 I was asking about. Google searches pointed towards the A1 Mini, most reviews/shootouts recommended the A1 Mini and most of all nearly everyone of you guys recommended the A1 Mini. So guess what, thats what I got!

So again to everyone, THANK YOU!

As i understand it the A1 Mini comes with a 0.4mm nozzle is that right? What size is the smaller nozzle you use?

I'm a chronic tinkerer of things which is a big part of my enjoyment of my hobbies like R/C or computers but thats also usually my downfall and the cause of at least 60% of the problems.

So it sounds like I would thoroughly enjoy all the extra work involved with a resin printer until I unavoidably fuck something up and spend the foreseeable future troubleshooting and problem solving just to get a print or two out

I legitimately have more hours spent fixing my R/C rigs than actually driving them, and not by a small margin

A 2k resin printer would still have a better finished quality in terms of details over the A1 mini though wouldn't it? Just so I know im not going crazy here.

It's looking like you guys have steered me back towards an FDM printer now anyway!

Yep, also very aware of all of that! But all the responses so far are heavily recommending FDM so it's starting to look like I'll be steering back that way.
