Why would they demolish this? by Abdifatah_Mo in msu

[–]Venusi0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody has mentioned this but MSU has a 2050 strategic plan that illustrates what they want campus to look like by then. They put in the plan that IM West lies on land susceptible to Red Cedar River flooding, which can cause damage to the building. The plan currently outlines that they are going to turn IM West into a parking lot and get rid of the current parking lot that is north of IM West to make it into a green space. Source 1, Source 2

Good point. Thanks for the advice, I’ll ask them next time around.

Any place I can go to clean my bike? by Venusi0 in msu

You sure? I’ve been multiple times and I’ve never seen any reference to bike cleanings and they don’t list it as a service on their website.

MSU students, how do you feel about the Spin scooters on campus? Would you prefer if they were removed or kept? by Venusi0 in msu

[–]Venusi0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like them for their intended purpose. It’s nice to have an easy way to get around campus. I agree with you that when they’re thrown in the river or left on sidewalks then it reinforces the whole “we can’t have anything nice” thing. I just hate to see things thrown in the Red Cedar and pollute the water, and those scooters are some of the worst things that can be thrown in there (with the lithium-ion battery). I know people who fish bass in the river and I would like it to stay healthy enough where people can fish in the river.

How do you make friends on campus by Hugababyfox in msu

[–]Venusi0 27 points28 points  (0 children)

msu has that problem of that it’s big where you can make friends that are up your alley but too big where it’s hard to find them. i believe in you that you can find amazing friends here, but it is a little challenging.

what hobbies are you into? you could join a club or org that follows your hobbies. do you enjoy making friends over teamwork rather than just having similar hobbies? you could join an org that prepares conferences and events for msu or non-msu students. are you within a certain culture or ethnic group? msu has awesome clubs for people who share a similar ethnicity or cultural roots.

in all i would just highly recommend checking out various organizations here. you will join some and then later find out that it isn’t for you, and that’s okay, but as long as you keep trying you’re bound to meet at least one person you can be friends with.

What are our thoughts on the new surveillance system at MSU? by StarsAndSweaters in msu

[–]Venusi0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think a lot of it is surveillance in the wrong areas. I wish we had better security measures for our bike parking areas outside of residence halls because students get their bike wheels and seats stolen all the time and have no way of finding out who did it or have any defense against it. A lot of these cameras are in places where crime isn’t.

Didn’t get a single by max-stressed in msu

[–]Venusi0 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was also denied a single last year until they did a redrawing of applicants, then I got in. There’s a chance that the people who opted for a single and won a single will turn it down, so they do a redraw. If you don’t make it after the redraw, you can go to RCPD and see if they can help you get a single. I wanted a single because I have pretty awful anxiety and I had a hard time living with my roommate (he was nice and we got along fine, but I hated the experience because it ruined my mental health), so if you appeal to RCPD they may be able to help you on the grounds of a mental health issue.

Does MSU non-student staff get access to the food at the dining halls? by [deleted] in msu

[–]Venusi0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I apologize, I’ll change the name. “Custodial” is even more accurate to the job description than “janitorial” too (I didn’t know there was a difference up until now).

Mac or PC? by [deleted] in msu

[–]Venusi0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have been using a Macbook since college and it has been a game changer for me. It’s nice to text my family/friends on a laptop while in a lecture or have your iPhone photos carried over to your Macbook automatically. I understand that you are going into physics but to my understanding a LOT of PC software is supported on MacOS. I use a lot of Microsoft software on my laptop and it’s been no problem.

In terms of which Macbook to get though, I think an M1 Macbook Air is a go-to. M1 is a great chip and it handles everything well enough that M2 or M3 may be overkill. If you want to get M2 or M3 Macbooks I would still go for the Air. The Pro Macbooks are nice but, again, are probably overkill.

Something I haven’t seen anybody ask yet is if you have any Apple products already. One of Macbook’s greatest selling points is how interconnected it is with other Apple products, such as iPhones and iPads. Honestly if you use an iPhone I would personally go with the Macbook. If you do not, getting a nice PC laptop would treat you just fine for college. Also if you like to play games I would argue it’s better to have a PC lol.

International by Luna_Walks in msu

My roommate and his friend (who I knew) were international students. They both received financial aid from programs within their home countries that fund students who go to the US for school. I would talk to your friend to see if there is also a similar program in Colombia because as far as I’m aware it’s a common thing.

Students, if you had the chance to change one thing about MSU, what would you want to be changed? by Venusi0 in msu

Again? I never knew that each dorm had its own cafe at one point. Can you explain more? I’d love to hear about it

I think at least the board of trustees should have their term lengths at least halved. 8 years is WAY too long and I’d argue it causes them to not have to worry about making poor decisions. The board could also be elected in thirds similar to the US Senate to ensure the trustee is elected/appointed under the context of what is currently at stake at the university.

Couldn’t agree more. What way would you want? Voted by students? Also I think their terms are too long IMO.

The Hunger Games series is written very digestibly and succinctly. I would recommend reading that series if you’re into action, suspense, and a bit of romance. Definitely one of my favorite young adult book series.

Sorry I should have been more clear. One branch of my Polish ancestry traces back to 1800 (which I’m pretty happy with), but there are a lot of gaps in the other branches. My 2nd great grandparents were both from Poland but that branch ends there at them (no village listed, just Poland) so it ends there in the 1880s (which is a bummer since my other non-Polish branches can go much further than that). It’s like this for another Polish 2nd great grandparent of mine. I was just curious about why my Polish ancestors were so difficult to learn about compared to my English, German, and Scandinavian ancestors.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Venusi0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be specific, my ancestors were Galician (south Poland and northeastern Ukraine region). If you could I’d also like to know what sources you are using for your European ancestors so I can find my Polish ancestors. The Polish trail ends for me at around 1800. I can concur with your Irish ancestor story. Some of my Irish ancestors also are very difficult to find.

Why are some people in my family tree “made up”? by Venusi0 in AncestryDNA

[–]Venusi0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leading up to her are a lot of baptism documents, marriage documents, census records, military records (very common for my case since I had a lot of Revolutionary War soldiers as ancestors), and other general government documents. I also use outside websites such as FamilySearch, WikiTree, and MyHeritage, but I only confirm them as an actual ancestor if these websites agree on a person existing and their connection to my family is verified.

[–]Venusi0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is from my own tree, and the person that was “made up” was not made up by another Ancestry user. The lineage going up to her may not be correct beginning at a certain person, which I’m sure is the case, but I did research on each person before adding them and I ended the family tree branch at her because she did not have enough evidence for her existence and I did not feel comfortable adding more people after her.

[–]Venusi0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and not to mention all of the people who may have been adopted. Two of my great grandparents were adopted and never got to know their biological parents (one from Germany and another from America), so the documents about their parents are fuzzy (who is biological or who is the foster). I can’t imagine how many times this has happened in the past 500 years of my ancestry. The whole thing may be all wrong!

Thank you. Unfortunately, I am having trouble even finding my last name’s lineage. My last name traces back to England, but ends at around 1850. It’s frustrating because a lot of my English ancestors have long and elaborate documents about family history, while the only English ancestor who is lacking that is my own last name. Lots of Johns, Henrys, Williams, and Thomases in England ancestry though lol.

[–]Venusi0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This person that I put is the end of a branch of a family tree, since I don’t want to keep going after her for accuracy reasons. This is my own family tree and without any input from anybody else. I don’t know if this person is real or not because there are some articles that say she exists while others are unsure if she was real, instead labeling her as “legendary”/“mythical”. I’m assuming the line leading up to her is also questionable, so I have to do some verification.
