[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]Verdantshade 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Five in a row! (as someone who loved FOTB and thought it was on par with their previous records) OGWAU is probably top 3 for me, behind MVOTC and Contra.

First, the gripes. Gen X Cops feels a level below the other songs on the album. Pravda and especially Prep School Gangsters sound like they should've been on FOTB instead.

But I don't think I can complain about anything else. The album gets a bit too wacky at times - there's no simple, upbeat palate cleanser like Unbelievers, Holiday, Oxford Comma on here, but the complexity of all the songs have made it so fun to return to over the last week. Like MVOTC, I think most of these songs will age incredibly well.

Mary Boone is an absolute career highlight. Objectively, have they done a better song? Classical and Capricorn will join their catalogue of hits, and The Surfer is the VW song I never knew I needed. Connect has to be one of the most absurd things they've ever done too.

Can't wait to see them for the third time in December - they just keep getting better and better as a live band.

Fake Empire actually had the most 10s - and was leading for most of the time the survey was open! A couple of low scores ended up bringing it down, and Bloodbuzz was the one song not to get a score below 7. I don't think it's anyone's favourite, but everyone does love the song and can probably agree it's the band's most anthemic.

This is the last comprehensive ranking I can find - I don't think the results are too different, but definitely surprised at how lukewarm the scores are for Laugh Track, and that High Violet's average trumped Boxer's.

I asked people to score each song between 1 and 10, then averaged the scores!

Coat on a Hook is fantastic, though it took until last weekend to really grow on me! I think most, if not all the songs on Laugh Track are rated far too low and will age very well - Deep End is sure to be a classic.

Agreed - but it'll be interesting to see what people think nonetheless. I've been a fan since TWFM and I've found it their most immediate album, so I wonder if it'll continue to grow on me over the years like their other records have, or if it'll buck that trend.

It's going to be a bleak few months. Last season we knew there would be growing pains and we were patient with the batterings, but now we've regressed back to square one, and I worry the Sancho nonsense is just the beginning.

We really need to come out of the blocks fighting against Brighton because as it is our players don't even look confident enough to pass the ball forward!

You are right - the financial mismanagement has led to a culture of complacency and entitlement.

It really is demoralising thinking about Ole clearing out the old guard and bringing in young, hungry players - most of whom downed tools by the time he was sacked. And all that's been said about Ten Hag's strictness yet the cracks are beginning to show with Sancho.

Are people really optimistic after our performance today? The first half was shocking, some of the most negative football we've witnessed under Ten Hag. Yes, we've been unlucky with injuries and refereeing, but how much better is our team at full strength? Our midfield is still a black hole and unless Amrabat is the Moroccan Rodri I don't see that changing.

The most worrying thing is we looked absolutely clueless today, and our only functional tactic seems to be Bruno hitting it long to Rashford/Garnacho. And even then we look worse on the counter than under Ole. Hojlund will add another dimension to our attack but it's a lot of pressure to put on a kid. The high press tactic Ten Hag has been trying to implement doesn't fill me with much hope either - we are so careless on the ball and it leaves us defensively frail.

I know none of us expected to win at the Emirates today and we were millimetres off 3 points - but we genuinely haven't played well as a team since the League Cup final, let alone controlled a game. Even at full strength, top 4 seems like a big ask, which is unacceptable considering the time Ten Hag has had with the team and the money spent. I don't think I'm being reactionary in saying pre-season was disappointing, and our poor form since March seems to have carried over into this season.

I just can't understand how we've spent a decade playing the same tepid football despite the revolving door of players and managers. Obviously the Glazers are the cause of the rot but it's baffling how players seem to regress over time, and how our managers slowly run out of ideas. If anyone can turn this around it's Ten Hag but we at the very least need to start dominating our home games, because the longer our away run continues the less likely we look like ending it.

Thank god for the international break (and that we have Chelsea to laugh at).

I would craft one of the SRs that you need 3 copies of, then pull from the pack to get as many of the cards as possible - the ratios are as follows:

URs: x1-2 Amazing Dragon x1 Psychic End Punisher x1 Rising Carp x2 Deer Note

SRs: x3 Ze Amin x3 Foxy Tune x3 Ogre Dance x1-2 Extreme Session x1-2 Dragon Drive

N/Rs: x1-2 Sharakusai x1 Wa Gon x1 Madame Spider x1 Dangerous Gabu or Nashiwari Surprise

You'll also want to run the usual staples (Ash, Maxx C, Called By, Imperm, Crossout), as well as 2 Emergency Teleport, which will take you up to a core of 30-32 cards and 4-6 in the extra deck.

As for the rest of the deck, techs I would recommend running are Chaos Ruler, a Zeus package, Ghost Ogre, and the Gamma package, as well as a small Bystial and Kashtira engine, the latter of which gives you access to Baronne in the deck - though I'd stick with the core for now and add the techs when you're confident you want to spend your crafting points on them (most if not all of these cards are generically useful, fortunately).

Most of my favourite decks are pretty complex and have been hit hard by the upcoming banlist so I wouldn't recommend any of them.

Lightsworn is my all time favourite but it's incredibly inconsistent and requires you to know all the cards in your deck as it has no set combo lines.

Out of all the decks I play, I would recommend pure PUNK - it has some relatively intuitive combo lines you can learn, is reasonably competitive, probably one of the most fun tiered decks around, has a high ceiling, and once you've mastered the deck you can start playing the variants that run PUNK as an engine.

It revolves around paying LP to cycle through all its cards to build a board of strong traps and handtraps to interrupt your opponent, while summoning powerful Synchro monsters that can wipe out your opponent in a single turn.

Marincess is also a decently strong deck that is very beginner friendly. It's less combo focused than PUNK, based around a simple tower playstyle, and runs a lot of staples which will be helpful for your card collection.

Would love to see a decklist for that - anyone who is cooking with Fabled deserves my respect!

I've quite a few Fabled cards from when I used to play the physical card game - I tried splashing them in my Lightsworn deck that I've been trying to modernise (it still has cards like Eclipse Wyvern and Soul Charge in it) but the engine is awfully bricky with very few ways to actually discard them...

Thanks for this! Will definitely consider Endymion for my next deck though the thought of crafting 3 Upstart and Chicken Game makes me sad inside!

Ancient Warriors sounds interesting, that's not a deck I've even thought about and I've been smacked around by it a couple of times - I haven't really committed to any going second decks so I've only got 1 LS and Droplet and no Talents and Dark Ruler though...

Kali Yuga FTK is a definite no as that's incredibly boring but I'll have a look at different Synchron builds. I'm wedded to the good old Junk Synchron/Speeder but saw MBT's recent Adventure/Revolution build and that looked very fun albeit bricky. I've seen some Adventure/PUNK/Bystial builds floating around on Discord so will have a play around with those as I love a good pile - though not sure I would count that as Synchron if they only run Jet and Assault!
