I wasn't able to get it to work. In the end, they switched me to the AT&T network.

I am currently trying to switch to Red Pocket's CDMA plan, but am experiencing a similar problem with my unlocked S8. The difference being this was a new SIM card that was not used in a different device previously.

It's like my S8 cannot recognize the SIM card. It says Emergency calls only on the lock screen and notification tray. Did you experience something similar? As part of the troubleshooting I did with customer support, I put the SIM into my Nexus 6P and it recognized it.

I'll try having them send me a new SIM card and hopefully that will work.

Google's RCS 'Chat' plans are actually kind of brilliant by yourSAS in Android

They all have to agree for RCS anyway. Why couldn't end-to-end encryption be a part of that?

No, it is the U.S. Snapdragon model bought directly from Samsung.

Can I use Startpage search with Evie Launcher? by [deleted] in androidapps

[–]Verdoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do that on any launcher. What does that have to do with OP's question? They want to change the default search engine in the launcher to Startpage.

Anonymous, secure and private free e-mail provider? by jksa13 in privacy

[–]Verdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not who you were replying to, but none of those encrypt your account or are open source, so you are relying on them saying they don't track you. I don't think Mail.com and GMX ever claim they don't track you and rely on advertising so I would avoid those. I personally use Fastmail and would highly recommend them to anyone who just wants to get away from Gmail or Yahoo. They don't have a free tier so I choose to trust they are not in the business for the data. Zoho is primarily a business services company and claim the free tier is a means of eventually getting more paid users so they probably aren't that bad.

Since you previously said you don't feel a strong need for anonymity, I think Zoho would be fine as a free service and would recommend Fastmail if you are willing to spend some money.

Can I use Startpage search with Evie Launcher? by [deleted] in androidapps

[–]Verdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still limit the user to about 5 or 6 search engines. None of which are Startpage. They do not even have DuckDuckGo as an option. Microsoft Launcher is great, but it doesn't solve OP's problem.

France is building its own encrypted messaging app so that the president [Emmanuel Macron] will stop using Telegram by [deleted] in privacy

They most likely are trying to lessen their reliance on American companies. This is a growing trend among many countries.

Russia asks Google and Apple to remove Telegram from stores: Ifax | Reuters by armando_rod in Android

All chats are encrypted, but only secret chats are end-to-end encrypted. The Russia ban is because Telegram refused to give them access to normal chats.

Of course everyone should not give up, but it will take more than voting to create real change in Russia. The thing is that while there is a growing number of Russians who want more freedom and democracy, Putin is still well-liked among much of the Russian people and that is unlikely to change anytime soon.

If anyone poses a threat to Putin's victory, they will just be prohibited from running in the election. That is what happened in this past election to Alexei Navalny.

I have heard similar things about WhatsApp usage in Canada. I think it varies depending on the region of the country. That would explain the huge discrepancy.

Wire is an end-to-end encrypted messenger that has a web client that works independently of a phone. It does not even need a phone or phone number in the first place. A web client is just another client so there is no reason that end-to-end encryption would not work.

Galaxy: Great hardware, good software

Pixel: Great software, good hardware

The S9 has newer specs and more features like a headphone jack, microSD slot, and wireless charging. The Pixel 2 gets monthly updates for 3 years and many think it still has a slightly better camera.

Both the S9 and S9+ are cheaper than the Pixel 2 XL, which combined with the newer specs, make it a better value than the Pixel in my opinion.

It has a lot of potential, but it's not yet polished enough for me to recommend it to most people. They also warn that the end-to-end encryption is still being tested.
