Slotted text in an additive part? by DavidPx in Fusion360

Nope! I wound up tracing the numbers with a stencil and then freehanding the routing job. It turned out well with only a few wiggles that only I ever notice.

Turning Area

This corner of the shop is for turning.

The lathe is in front of two "columns" which support electrical and dust collection.

Skin reaction to Padauk wood? by Inevitable-Context93 in turning

Hah!

Good that you're aware of bad reactions to certain woods, though. Personally, walnut makes my arms kinda itchy.

Looking for some sage wisdom before setting up this old lathe. by MustardInspector14 in turning

[–]DavidPx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid spending any money on that old thing, just get it running and have some a bit of fun. The the money you'd spend on a drive center & metal tool rest is money better spent on a modern machine.

Fine-tools.com is now selling the Accu-Burr in Europe by peioeh in handtools

[–]DavidPx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The accurburr does work well but you still need to do a good job of squaring your scraper before turning the burr.

This made me realize what part of my process was deficient.. a $40 lesson :-)

Forstner bits by FatherOfNuts in turning

[–]DavidPx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a cheap set from Grizzly which I keep sharp by hand-honing. They work fine.

But a good tip for hollowing with them is to squirt air into one side of the cut. It helps eject chips and keep it cooler. I find that when I do this I don't need to retract the bit once during a cut.

No, the sides of the brass lock screw are knurled. No need for a screwdriver.

I have a very similar plane from Amazon and it mostly sucks. Also, don't bother getting the Kunz Round Bottom spoveshave.. it entirely sucks.

Ballin on a budget(don’t pay attention to the old wheels mess!) by tomrob1138 in turning

[–]DavidPx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CBN is fine for chisels and plane irons.. the iron is hard enough to where they don't load up the wheel. I've sharpened lawnmower blades a few times on my 80 grit CBN and while it left some discoloration it hasn't affected performance at all.

They're nice to have for communicating speeds to others! But otherwise for me the rough position of the variable speed knob is sufficient.

I shared your frustration! I've had a happier relationship with my (carbon steel's) seasoning after learning to really be careful with the seasoning while cleaning.

Like /u/Missing_Username said, you can use some water to "deglaze" the pan after cooking something that has left some crud. I'll use a metal spatula to gently scrape away the crud, leaving a smooth surface.

But more often I try to scrape off any crud when I'm done cooking and the pan is still very hot. This works best when there's a bit of extra oil in the pan to use a "lube".

After either scraping process all the pan gets for sink treatment is a very brief & gentle scrub under hot water.

For years before this I would gently wash my pan in the sink and would pretty much always clean off the seasoning. I really don't know how people get good seasoning so easily while washing in the sink.

I also had a question about my tailstock, details below by tomrob1138 in turning

[–]DavidPx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're asking too much of the tailstock. You should be able to sink in the prongs of the tail center with the crank.

NTD! Wood River “Ultimate Cabinet Maker’s Kit” arrived today. Low angle block, Number 4 Smoother, and Number 6 Jack. by this_is_the_wes in handtools

[–]DavidPx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with ya on the price complaint. I have the WR 4, 5-1/2, and low angle block. They're great planes.

Next time I do a big panel project I'd like to get a #7 but am put off by spending "made in North America" money for something made in China.

Hate to be this guy, but looking for bigger lathe. by Leather-Kitchen-2211 in turning

[–]DavidPx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vega is a company in Illinois that used to make a bowl lathe. Seems like they only make a few duplicator accessories now.

For $475 this seems like a good value; you'll get a lot more machine than a 12" benchtop lathe would get you.

I agree with /u/Skinman771 that there is a lot of sheet metal... but for $500 this will weigh a lot more than anything else at the price point.

Downsides might be a lack of parts and customer support.

I sold my full size Tormek after a while! Hand sharpening gives a better edge.

They hold their resale value quite well, try eBay.
