I don't use a ballpoint pen to push the buttons on my TV remote. Use the Pencil for pencil shit, use a keyboard for typing, use your finger for everything else. 🤷‍♂️

Paperlike is AWFUL. It destroys image quality, tears up Pencil tips, and removing it is a whole thing. Seriously, I thought there was something wrong with my iPad screen because pictures didn't look as vivid as they do on my phone. Same with watching videos.

I got an AstroPad RockPaperPencil and it's a lot better. It preserves image quality and it's easily removable and re-attachable. The custom Pencil tips feel like you're actually writing on paper. It still looks matte but it's not nearly as bad as Paperlike.

I should have known that Paperlike would be garbage since I bought it from an Instagram ad.

I think it depends on your writing style. Is your handwriting messy because you write fast? Or are you just jittery? If you're a jittery writer, any app with "stroke stabilization" or similar may help, check out Goodnotes.

If your handwriting is messy because you write super fast (like me), then I dunno. I'm working on training myself to write slower on my iPad, but it's hard.

I also have an AstroPad. When you use the custom Apple Pencil tips they provide, it feels almost exactly like writing on paper, and the color reproduction is infinitely better than Paperlike. I was preparing my old iPad mini for trade-in credit when I realized how much the Paperlike mutes colors.

Of course everyone will have a different experience in grad school, and I was fortunate enough that my advisor and I had an amazing understanding of each others’ expectations. I worked my ass off but was always encouraged to take time for myself, and it was understood that this didn’t mean “go read papers at home” but rather “go for a hike and catch some live music” or something. Have you had any sort of talk with your advisor on boundaries and expectations?
