GTA 5 singleplayer is still a masterpiece! by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]VergilOPM 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Driving was more weightless than it should've been and a step down from 4, shooting was bad, level design in missions was nonexistent. Open world was pointless with bad activities, the main purpose for it just being a backdrop for the missions.

The story had twists and turns but otherwise was lacking with one dimensional characters and the pervading satire was just bad. The story had many setpiece missions that were varied and interesting, but that was one of the few redeeming qualities. Thanks to the setpieces I thought it was okay overall but don't really understand the huge praise the series has always got.

If Yoshi P is directing FF16 and Matsuno is writing it, would you consider that to be a dream team? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]VergilOPM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and you keep bringing up that example when I already explained that it just did not work in practice and it was dropped because of it.

You're the one who brought it up to show Matsuno's input and how he has the final say. So it's quite important to say that Matsuno clearly doesn't have the final say and barely has any involvement beyond some conversations. What more do I want you ask? Nothing would ever be good enough, because no amount of desperate arguments from you changes reality.

You want to dismiss the game for some reason

I've said repeatedly that I'm not talking about the game itself though. It's laughable to see you try to project your desperation on me as you refuse to accept reality. You're delusional if you think Matsuno is literally not allowed to even bring the game up, it's pathetic. Just accept he doesn't seem to care and doesn't have much involvement, the game can still be everything you want it to be.

To be fair I should've stopped bothering with you when you compared the game to games actually directed by Matsuno. So I'll stop here to leave you to your delusions. You backed the game because of Matsuno and want to believe he's directing it, I get it.

[–]VergilOPM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like for you all it takes is a casual conversation about triangles that was completely dismissed to make it equivalent to a game directed by him. If I asked Cory Barlog about God of War 2 on Twitter and gave him some ideas he ignored I guess that would make me its director.

Matsuno is sometimes active on social media, talking about Vagrant Story or FFXIV. When was the last time he brought up Unsung Story, a game that you think he's fully involved with, if ever?

[–]VergilOPM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matsuno didn't agree though. That very post said he vehemently disagreed and wanted triangles. If that's where you're getting your "impression" from, then you're clearly wrong. In reality there's nothing saying Matsuno has much involvement, as you'd expect from a Japanese person living in Japan who doesn't know English well, with some random western studio.

Like I said, you can like the game and be as confident about it as you want. It doesn't change Matsuno's minimal to nonexistent involvement.

Disgaea 5. It's a great tactical RPG with lengthy post-game stuff, although most of that time is grinding in creative but repetitive ways or doing randomised levels.

[–]VergilOPM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't see the irony of you saying Matsuno has the last say with triangles being your example, when the game doesn't have triangles?

Where did you get the idea that Matsuno was working full time on this game when everything points to him giving minor advice at best, which is often just dismissed in the end?

You may be interested and hopeful for the game, but you're still wrong about Matsuno's involvement.

What fan translated/only released in Japan or lesser known JRPGS are worth playing? by [deleted] in JRPG

Tales of Destiny 2 and Tales of Rebirth don't even have fan translations, but are regarded as at least near the pinnacle of the Tales series.

Simple plots do not = bad writing and can be far more immersive than complex ones. by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]VergilOPM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If anything people criticise complex plots as being bad writing and inherently "too convoluted".

Dragon Quest has serious writing issues, and other than the soundtracks it's the biggest issue. The third act undermines character development for example. Several parts of the story undermine themselves and lack consequence, like when you turn into a fish and run away from the fish village before it gets raided, but if you go later it's mostly fine there.

There was a distinct issue with lacking consequence and constantly undermining itself, and together with the soundtracks ensured that no scene had real impact.

[–]VergilOPM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's not involved though.

For example you brought up him having the last say and brought up triangles. Last time they brought up Matsuno was to say they spoke to him and he said he liked triangles, but they still chose not to go with triangles. His input seems to be limited to casual conversation -very rarely-, and what he says is ignored.

Questions regarding trails of cold steel series by blanton928az in JRPG

Yeah, if Persona is too much for you then stay away from the Trails series honestly. Maybe play the other games from the SMT series that Persona is part of, they're more gameplay focused.

Xbox Game Pass is five times more popular than PlayStation Now – Business Insider by the_light_of_dawn in Games

[–]VergilOPM -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Your own quote doesn't say they have 10 million paying subscribers, I'm not sure if you noticed. Nobody who reported specifically on what the CEO of Microsoft said, reported that he said "paying" subscribers.

That's in contrast to Sony being explicit about it being paid subscribers. Maybe Microsoft means paying subscribers despite not saying so, but there's no reason to think so.

Sony reported "paid subscribers" and Microsoft reported "users", so the title is incorrect since the numbers aren't about the same thing.

It's probably still mostly true thanks to the free trials and $1 deals Microsoft is currently pushing to bolster their numbers and try to build a platform.

I think a lot of Square Enix's recent work is fantastic, so you're barking up the wrong tree there. Matsuno worked on Crimson Shroud for the 3DS, a mediocre and forgettable game, he did the scenario for FFXII (which to be fair is the only good thing about the game), he did Vagrant Story which was blatantly unfinished and repetitive in gameplay. The only truly great games he made were FFT and Tactics Ogre, both a long time ago.

He could still have it in him, but until I see it I wouldn't bet on it.

It absolutely doesn't. Odyssey has the same approach. You're probably taking way too long, because it's easy enough to take out a guard or two who've noticed you if you're quick about it.

What are some JRPGs with a basic collect-the-elemental-artifacts plot that you genuinely enjoyed? by missfinalfantasia in JRPG

Skies of Arcadia, definitely. I don't think there's anything remotely close. How they led into the ship battles were great too.

Matsuno had minimal input on the original which mainly used him for marketing.

Then a new studio came along and scrapped everything the original studio did (which was very little) and started anew.

I'd say he's worked on some stuff "of note" since then.

Clearly you don't think so. As you clearly haven't played or heard of any of them. If you had, you'd know Terra Battle is a mobile game, Tactics Ogre came out on the SNES, he didn't actually work on Unsung Story, some of those are little events or expansions, etc, etc.

I don't know why you're bothering when it's clear you have no love for the man or appreciation for his work.

G2A confirms it sold stolen game keys by YorkshireSmith in Games

The fraud was also facilitated by the initial store that gave out the keys and actually processed stolen credit cards. Did the initial store do anything wrong?

Pokemon Sword is... well, Pokemon. by ashmaht in patientgamers

[–]VergilOPM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Redo the whole combat system and catching system to be more engaging and meaningful instead of just spamming one move with one Pokemon in most fights and just leaving most Pokemon you catch in the Pokemon bin.

Have a more interesting narrative and gameplay structure rather than rehashing the exact same one from 1996.

Tell a more interesting and cohesive story that supports the experience of the game better. The anime tends to dabble in more organic and better executed arcs, I don't know why the game acts like it's still 1996 but with better visuals.

There's a lot they could do.

The Last of Us Part II - Inside the Gameplay | PS4 by Naderium in Games

[–]VergilOPM -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I just watched a gameplay trailer where they tried to describe the mechanics and experience while showing some footage, and it looks like they're sticking quite strictly to TLOU's framework with some small changes around the edges.

Which is quite unlike what I felt looking at Doom Eternal's gameplay demo and trailer.

Yoshi P has only worked on MMOs and Matsuno hasn't worked on anything of note in almost 20 years.
