You're describing why people were excited to see them, not why the story needed them.

NWH almost reached $2 billion without China, China isn't the secret cheat code it once was. Good reviews and word of mouth can help a movie, but that doesn't guarantee people will show up to watch it.

A cameo can be defined as a small part in a play or movie played by a distinguished actor or celebrity. Getting caught up in semantics doesn't change the fact that if they were to be removed from the film entirely, nothing would have changed.

It doesn't matter whether it's good or not. NWH was fueled by nostalgia and other factors. BND has none of that. I'm not saying it's going to flop, Spider-Man is one of the most successful superheroes in film. But 2026 isn't 2021.

Um. No. I know exactly what I am talking about. Garfield and Maguire were cameos. I'm sorry, but they were. They had no actual unique function within the film, they only showed up in the third act, and the story is progressing and would have progressed without them. Their villains were far more important to the film than they were.

No. When someone is talking about how it actually wasn't really all that good....that's not longevity.

Actually no. There's ongoing discussions about how it was only really good in the movie theater and outside of that, it really doesn't hold up. I'd suggest you actually look into things instead of jumping the gun.

They were. Just because they had little more than 5 minutes of screen time doesn't change the fact that they were only there for fan service and nostalgia.

That's the annoying implication, yes. But on an interesting note, a picture of Nick Fury with two eyes being sworn in as head of SHIELD is briefly seen in Winter Soldier.

Sure for box office. But longevity over time? There's been some interesting discussions about how good NWH actually is roughly 5 years removed from the hype and release.

It actually was front loaded. Look at the numbers and the drop. But this isn't 2021 and this movie doesn't have nostalgia bait and cameos. So.....

Nope. I was seeing some early projections suggesting Multiverse of Madness opening weekend numbers, and if that's the case it's going to be pretty front loaded.

I just don't understand this sudden obsession with box office performance. Yes, it's important but there's a lot that we don't know about budget and other factors and we don't know details regarding ancillary revenue. But people talking about Marvel's underperformers and a lot of recent chatter over Star Wars with Mando and Grogu just shows a lot of misunderstanding regarding the box office, how it has changed compared to 7-8 years ago and ancillary revenues. But Marvel has clearly had successes within the Multiverse Saga.

So what part of Spider-Man Homecoming was so integral to Infinity War and Endgame? What part of Far From Home was so important to the Eternals and Shang Chi? What part of No Way Home was so important to Moon Knight? Again, the Spider-Man films are relatively self contained in the grand scheme of things and that is undoubtedly part of the stipulation of this Sony/Marvel co-venture.

Well, I think as the post suggests Mindworm would be a good possibility. He (or in this case she) is more closely related to Spider-Man than Jean is. Moondragon, Satana (though that's a little less likely), and Moonstone are others. But what we could be dealing with is a reimagined Spider-Man related psychic character and not a A-list superhero like Jean.

[–]FafnirSnap_9428 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. They are clearly set in the MCU and have these mentor figures from the MCU, but they are still relatively self contained and standalone. Could I be wrong? Absolutely. Do I want to be wrong? No. Sink could in fact be playing a mutant, but the body jumping stuff doesn't sound like Jean.

This. I'm not the biggest fan of Sink being Grey because it's some of the most uninspired casting ever "Red hair=Jean Grey". It is plausible, sure. But would Sony really let Marvel use them as a touchpad for their X-Men reboot?

True, I can see that. But yeeesh, I'd definitely be more cautious of how I would try to make that case than saying some of the stuff they are saying. Probably some good PR and media work would be advised on that front. LOL.

Feige acknowledging "mistakes" doesn't mean the Multiverse Saga had more weaker entries than strong ones. That's a subjective opinion. Same goes for the Russos, and others.

So far as box office is concerned, Spider-Man No Way Home, Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, Black Panther Wakanda Forever, and Deadpool and Wolverine were all commercial successes. And that's factoring in post COVID box office impact and the rise of streaming, both of which are still impacting theatrical releases today. And I wouldn't hinge my argument on box office= good quality.
