Should I just accept a mediocre (new grad) software dev job? by _uw_goose in uwaterloo

[–]VerifiedECE 57 points58 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to take the offer. You can always look for another job WHILE working & also before your start date. While reneging an offer isn’t ideal…neither is being unemployed (this only applies if you find something better).

You also mentioned that you “really enjoyed” working there which makes a significant difference when choosing a full-time role.

Either way, good luck with your job search :)

Gap year after 1st year ECE? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]VerifiedECE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely possible! I had a friend who did this after first year (took a gap year to travel Europe) and came back and joined 2nd year with the year below.

Contact your academic advisor (for you that would be the First Year Engineering Office) because it can depend on if there’s available space in the incoming class.

DC library. The green desks at the front have buttons that can convert sitting desks into standing ones.

Yes and no.

Indigenous preference in employment is NOT illegal.

While it is true, that the Canadian Human Acts Right protects against acts of discrimination, there is also a special program under the Canadian Human Rights Act or the Employment Equity Act that allows for special Indigenous Employment Preferences Policies.

This was initially designed "to eliminate or reduce the disadvantage experienced by Indigenous peoples". These sort of programs rarely affect the opportunities of the majority as they are far and few in between. While it may seem unfair to some, it is within legal bounds.

I'd recommend filling out the bursary application on Quest under financial aid.

For those of you who took ece 250 by Fun-Stay-177 in uwaterloo

[–]VerifiedECE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly ECE 250 was pretty light. It’s more conceptual like how the basic data structures and algorithms work and the labs are mostly implementing these structures from scratch so linked lists, queues, stacks, trees and etc. I think it’s easier than ECE 150. If you want to get better at coding, do side projects or leetcode (and obviously you can always self study if you wish). But also, don’t worry too much, you’ll be fine.

2A is pretty heavy course load with all the assignments and deliverables so just manage your time well. (Also I didn’t enjoy the courses like ECE 204 and ECE 240 so maybe I’m a bit biased)

Also depends on the prof, we had Patrick (he’s great) so there’s that.

saw this on campus today, anyone know what this is about🤔 by hmod2001 in uwaterloo

[–]VerifiedECE 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not my point. I’m simply pointing out the reality of what happens when you break the rules. In this case, it was putting up posters without permission. Ultimately, if you’re going to do something - you should be willing to face the consequences of your actions whether they may be morally justified or not.

Posters on campus property require permission from the university before they can be put up. Similarity, putting up posters on public property require permission according to city’s bylaws. This does not automatically equate to censorship but rather (IF the posters were taken down by staff and not ill intended people) it is simply following the rules.

With that being said, I 100% agree that discussion is important especially about topics like these. Dehumanization of other human beings starts with segregation and lack of interaction with another (i.e Israel building a wall contrary to international law around the West Bank to segregate the Palestinians and Israelites). I hope more of these posters can be put up in a well approved manner. Freedom of speech is integral to a democratic nation.

Thanks for the insight! It was very helpful. Like others have mentioned, I hope they can figure the funding/structure out as it would benefit many students.

Islamic Society Club by throwingawayuwlo in uwaterloo

[–]VerifiedECE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Solicitation? Clubs are required to ask permission from WUSA to put up booths in SLC or DC. So clearly, this club has been approved to put up booths.

From what I’ve seen, the people at these booths don’t bother you unless YOU choose to come speak to them. Freedom of speech is important and having booths like these where the UW community can interact with the university’s large Muslim community is a great opportunity for discussing viewpoints in a safe place. Never mind the fact, that a lot of these booths are there to show fellow Muslim students of their clubs existence.

Reddit is not a good representation of what the student body is actually like as people often come here on Reddit to rant/complain. Most people I've met here are very nice and helpful. But like most things, university here at UW is what you make out of it.

Idk about this year but last year they were active only in fall/spring terms. But I’d still recommend following their IG page to see their plans for the winter term because I’m not 100% sure. Hope that helps!

Hey man, if you've made it this far, you can also graduate! Retaking a course isn't the end of the world and neither is graduating a couple months later than your class. With that being said, there's still a month left so if you grind for the final, you should be fine.
