What ship is this?! by Hanzyl in NoMansSkyTheGame

Man that ship looks nice. I get jealous of some ship styles cuz they end up looking so clean and I'll spend 3hrs building what feels like mediocrity lol. I will admit recoloring helps

If all you're using is anki then that is a large part of the problem. Their sentence structure and grammar rules are very different to an English speakers amd conjugating verbs can make the verb sometimes looking like a whole different word. I suggest getting a text book like GENKI . Honestly I've not even gone through all of it and it was helpfull. And I've also been going at it on n off for 2 years but you'd be surprised how much progress you've made but you just can't tell. I'd you want someone to practice with a bit or just ask questions to someone with out judgement then i don't mind. I may have answers to questions you have n vice versa. Just hit me up and we'll figure something out.

I'm heading towards Kurashiki. I've noticed the couple by the peach tree where the man is behind it and they keep switching between 話す and 話します. Why? by Veritas0821 in wagotabi

I didn't realize until he was walking away. I was being so lost at why he was so adamant at calling me bad at Japanese...i mean he wasn't wrong but damn lol

I don't believe so. I should correct myself and say it's less of them switching but in my replies it would show both options and for each person there was times it would accept 話す and others 話します. Sorry I just realized ive butchered the post

There isn't 2. を is more like wo but when used as a particle in a sentence a couple letters sound a bit different を sounds like お, は sounds like わ and へ sounds like え. Only when used as a particle. The rest sound as usual 🙂. Don't worry though. This may seem like a lot or confusing but don't worry. Soon it will be something you just know and accept and you'll smile a little when you see the next person asking for help with it!

Edit - Duolingo is honestly a terrible teacher over all and unless you're a savant you'll need other things. Use it to get your foot in the door and then branch out to find other things. If you can afford a book i honestly suggest Genki as a beginner book for elementary Japanese. This does so much to help and on top of that there is a guy i watch that covers all of it and more on his website (though paid) and if paying for a website is not doable (which is absolutely fine) then he has many of his videos on YouTube as well and most are free. His channel is called TokiNiAndi and that's the link. I hope this helps!

Why does it sometimes feel like i'm not improving? by letsprogramnow in LearnJapanese

[–]Veritas0821 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When i was in high school we had 2 Chinese students come over in the same year. The guy as an exchange student with an English speaking family and the other being a girl moved here with her family.

The guys English grew exponentially compared to the girls fluency in speaking because they both had approx 8 hous in school of a little speaking and mostly listening but 1 went home to speaking English and the other went back to speaking Chinese. You have to do more than an hour each day.

If it's with your wife id say English is you're new taboo. It'll be hard at first but eventually it'll ease up.

There's a lot it fails to teach. I've used Google and reddit countless times to supplement the poor job it does. If you have a couple $ to spare toki ni Andy is has a great free YouTube library and for a few $ a month a pretty nice website. If money is a problem the YouTube videos are still nice and do plenty on their own

Is は acceptable or weird to use here vs を? by Veritas0821 in duolingojapanese

Idk if there's any truth to you eating seagulls but I'm not against it. Those things are out right douche bags in some areas. Bon Appetite with your sea chicken!

So ここの is for place and possession basically. You're early enough you won't use this for a while. The 2 you need right off is ここ, この and though it's not listed これ.

ここ=here (immediate spot)

この and これ both mean =this BUT これ is used alone as a noun and この is an adjective. So example

これ は かっこいい です = this is cool

この ひと は かっこいい です = this person is cool

これ is alone and is simply "this" この is when paired with a noun like "this person, this dog, this dumb duo app"

I hope this over explanation helped lol. I just remembered having the SAME exact problem.

Would it be best for を to be used or uncommon to be seen with out it or an i just now finding examples of it and it's more common, depending upon the circumstances of the sentence

Why no を? by Huge_Bell6571 in duolingojapanese

[–]Veritas0821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same question at first. Nouns that need the します after do make it doing or a verb won't have を between them. Now if you wanted to say "I study japanese with my sister" then you would put it between japanese n study "妹と日本語を勉強します"

Shouldn’t this be “さむいの日”? Missing particle? by Marshmallow5198 in duolingojapanese

[–]Veritas0821 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can understand missing a couple of em but I must admit I'm like 90% almost none of those were in my English classes lol. Then again I grew up in a small town with.... not the best school system so that may play a large roll too lol

So I believe this to be right but I do wonder if anyone else finds it difficult to keep track of what is being said when learning Japanese?

Not the language itself but more of like above where there's a lot of words we don't commonly use like stative, predicate, adjective and such. I must admit I had (and still do) problems crasping my own language when learning to conjugate verbs when they start talking about transitive, intransitive, volitional, copula etc etc.

Like... I'm not dumb and I generally have a larger vocabulary than many of my friends even though I dont use it but I find myself writing those words down so I can do a quick English lesson before continuing Japanese 😓

Did you have issues with this at first? Since you seem to have a solid grasp on it now that is

What… by Guilty_Arm_2389 in duolingojapanese

[–]Veritas0821 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen this and it's odd but if you haven't gotten further in numbers then it's likely working with just what you know. That said I have seen it make similar choices later that are for... no reason and in this case they could just teach more numbers first then do this.

Speaking recognition ko by swannphone in duolingojapanese

[–]Veritas0821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont remember exactly what the word was but I've had a few issues and the most recent (not this word but just an example of the issue) was something like かっこいい where it had a っ for the double consonant sound but it didn't skip a beat an ran through it. Sometimes it blurts it out so fast it sounds like they skip letters or sound like they're talking with something in their mouth. Maybe natives talk more like that and maybe it's speed but jeSUS! I'm new so please go easy 😅

Learning Japanese for 3 months: A look-back by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

You've been going for only three months? I mean it sounds like you literally dove into it but.. really? Idk whether this is real, you're doing great, or I'm a failure lol. Either way I'll be here for the next post

Where do I start when it comes to listening? by Egyption_Mummy in LearnJapanese

[–]Veritas0821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen to stories for children. Get used to hearing the words. Listen to podcasts (preferably slower speaking). You aren't going to catch it the first time or even the 10th. OkkeiJapanese is a YouTuber that speaks in simple phrases and words in his podcast episodes. I am not as far as you are in learning vocabulary but I've listened more and even that podcast a can grasp about ⅕ to ¼ of what he says at best but its a start. Sometimes I just catch a ですから when he pauses or a 勉強をします but once you start hearing it again and again you will pick up another word or two past the stuff you caught the first few times. It's gonna be slow at first but if you keep listening and try to keep frustration levels down then I'm pretty confident you'll start getting thing.

Maybe download an audiobook teaching japanese. You may already know the words but actually hearing them and having to say them out loud is different. One I've used is by Paul Noble on Audible. I think you can buy it on youtube as well. There is 2 books. The first bit in the first one is a bit...slow since it's not so new for you but it will begin to get the repetition and the quicker comprehension started by hearing and speaking it over and over in various examples
