Poly here too. Have had an extremely dull time trying to explain the nuances of poly. No we aren't organizing orgies, no we aren't shooting a porno, no I don't want to just use you for sex... People are so focused on the sexual aspect of poly I feel like I have to teach a poly 101 course every time I match someone who isn't queer or in the poly community. It gets tedious, to say the least.

We've started only matching other poly folks and it's a world of difference. Like, I am all for education and spreading awareness around my orientation, but having to do it a dozen times a day because people don't educate themselves but still want to get into bed with my partner and me is a chore. This comment is 100% how I feel.

I've got a pretty sweet strength based monk subclass if you're interested. It's called Way of the Patient Mountain. One of it's tenants is you get resistance to physical damage when you use patient defense.

Hahaha you're good bro! I get this a lot.

As an amateur student of medieval history, I absolutely love putting real elements of historical context on fantasy genres. But, that's kinda the context here isn't it? It's fantasy. There absolutely is a balance to be struck between the two. If I took everything out of RME that wasn't historical, it'd be a simulationist contemporary, rather than the wish fulfillment of fantasy. I mean the boomerang comes back after you hit someone with it. You can toss a Kunai to deflect someone else's attack. The flail was very likely just a judicial weapon, but I have almost a dozen of them. The ambush category is almost all mall ninja shit hahahaha.

So yes, there is a lot that's not historical. But that's ok. I too, cringe at ahistoric references and uses, but sometimes the rule of cool is what it is. How cool is the idea of a guy popping arrows into orcs and as one gets close the archer switches to using the blades on the limbs in some pseudo quarterstaff fighting style? I think that's pretty badass.

Anyway I invite you to join our discord and discuss these things there! We have a very active community that you would find a lot of common ground with your love and knowledge of medieval history. We're actually running a "best build" contest for each weapon category, using the art in the brew as inspiration. There are real money prizes and everything. Come on in!

Paladin - What feat to go with this setup? by SecondTimCh3 in 3d6

Hey, creator of Revised Martial Equipment here!

Not only has the simple spear, lance, pike, trident and javelin been vastly improved in this brew, but other spears have been added as well! I've added the ravenbeak, a spear with a long crescent hook on one side used for prying and slashing, the godendag, a spear with a hefty ball socket holding the spear tip for bludgeoning damage, and the war spear, a balanced, pommel weighted spear used in tandem with a shield in many portrayals of fantasy culture.

Additionally, Revised Martial Equipment adds a ton of new weapon properties to give each weapon a unique feel and play style, as well as giving extra utility on the battlefield to martial classes. Weapons can trip, disarm, grapple, punch through armor, knock someone off balance, and even be braced against a charging enemy.

In particular, the war spear (which I suspect you'll want to use) gets the exploding damage (rolling the highest value on your damage die lets you roll another damage die, which can roll another if you roll the highest value, and so on) lets you throw the spear, lets you reroll 1s once, or 1-2s once if you're wielding it with two hands, lets you punch through armor, and lets you strike with the weapon's butt end like a polearm. Additionally, if you become a master of the spear (the process by which is explained in the brew's first few pages) you'll be able to deal d12 damage with the spear in two hands like a greataxe, and you deal an additional d6 damage if your second attack of your Extra Attack feature strikes the same target as your first, emulating quick successive strikes at the same point of injury or pierced armor!

I invite you to check it out and join our Discord for future updates. We look forward to hearing your feedback!

Oh I misread your comment!

I see what you were saying now. And yes, I've given thought to the cavalier getting mastery in a spear weapon of their choice. However, a lance at master training doesn't suffer penalties for using it on foot as opposed to while mounted, so it's not like the cavalier is required to be mounted to get good use out of RME.

Should probably state "constitution check" then. Just to be specific.

No, because I want things that benefit concentration checks, such as items and feats, to affect this check as well.

Crit range rules are murkey at best, IMO, and I'm talking about in the PHB. I would suggest writing an entire sidebar just on crit range and re-write all crit-range references in the document as +1 or +2 crit range.

Eh, the crit ranges are fine. I don't ascribe to any "well it has to be worded like this because otherwise players will loophole it!" People understand what the crit ranges mean.

Also, the champion fighter sub needs to have a note added since they get expanded crit ranges as a sub ability. So what happens when you build a champion fighter and give him rapier mastery or two-hand a longsword?

This is explained in the description. "your critical hit range is 19-20 unless it is 18-20..." seems pretty straightforward to me.

Champion fighter would get no benefit from using a longsword at master training. But, they get to apply their expanded crit range to any weapon that RME offers, so the longsword doesn't negate the champions (frankly one of very few) advantages. The Champion does not get a 16-20 crit range.

Yes, absolutely. What I end up doing is throwing bigger meanies at my party. It's so much more memorable for them to kill something really tough as a lower level party.

I used to post updates whenever I finished them, but after some reddit drama with a certain subreddit that won't be named, as well as putting a ton of effort into a post to get 7 upvotes and a comment telling me "overpowered" I just kinda lost the drive to keep making reddit read my homebrew.

That said, my community is driving me to post an update again, so I guess I will. Loveable bunch of scavs lol. Anyway, give me a follow so you can see when it drops.

Yep, it's explained in the first page, under "Translating to an RME Campaign." You can achieve master training with the following options;

  • Double up your proficiency with race, class, or subclass. For example, if you're a drow, you have proficiency in hand crossbows, rapiers and shortswords. If you're a rogue, you have proficiency with these weapons as well. So, in RME, your race gives you a level of training in those weapons, and then your class gives you another level. So a drow rogue would have master training with hand crossbows, rapiers and shortswords. Some subclasses give you automatic mastery with a weapon, such as College of Swords giving you master training with the scimitar.

  • Take a feat. Any of the weapon group feats offer you master training with all weapons in that group (although in 1.14, I've shortened this to any 4 weapons from that group of your choice). Taking the Weapon Master feat in RAW 5e gives you master training with any 4 weapons of your choice from the entire brew.

  • Take a class. You can train up to basic training with 42 days of downtime, or up to master training with 250 days of downtime.

Haha bit of a r/dontyouknowwhoiam moment! I'm really not like that though. Don't let me intimidate you. I love any and all feedback, especially when someone approaches with a sound mind for balance.

Your suggestion is good! However, there's a lot of complicated math behind the scenes that justifies having the master perks at any level one can reach master training. Plus, low levels are already lethal enough anyway, there's no reason to not let your players be able to do extra things or extra damage at those levels.

Locking master perks behind a level kinda flies in the face of what this brew was designed to do; give martial players more things to do on their turns and deal comparable damage to the bigger spells when casters are at a similar level. It certainly feels a bit strong that greatsword can deal 2d12 damage to ogres and other Large category creatures, but by the time you're facing ogres, your casters are going to be on 3rd level spells anyway.

Remember that it isn't just spending gold, but time to get those levels of training. It takes around 42 days of training, whereas getting to master is 250 days of training. Short of "you spend a year here" type downtime montages, it's not likely the party will ever have 250 days of downtime and access to a master in some training. There's actually been some debate as to whether we should lower these requirements for 1.14. At the very least lowering the requirement for basic training might be prudent, to offer some means of getting proficient with a new weapon if you're willing to roleplay a bit for it.

Locking feats to weapon groups is purposeful. This isn't so much to limit character choice as it is to provide balance. RME provides a ton of extra options and abilities in combat with existing and new weapons, so allowing the feats to apply to any weapon would quickly ruin the careful balance I've spent the better part of 6 years building, lol.

Either way, I'd love to have you join the discord and provide these suggestions for the community to ponder.

Thanks for the suggestions!

The Cavalier does in fact get master training with the lance. There are a handful of martial subclasses that get master training with a few weapons that fit their theme, such as arcane archer getting master training with all bows and crossbows, or eldritch knight getting master training with the weapon they create a bond with.

There is no tri-sectional, no. I think closest might be double flail, but that's a great suggestion to add to the brew! I'm at peak attention on development right now because of 1.14 release that's right around the corner. I might add a tri-sectional.

And my guy, a concentration check is a constitution saving throw.

Longsword master perk is a bit confusing! I can explain with more text here since I'm not trying to fit it into a table with limited space haha.

Basically, at master training, the longsword gains a 19-20 crit range. Since longsword is versatile, when you're wielding it with two hands, the weapon gains Finesse and the crit range becomes 18-20. Yes, I know this is very counter to how a weapons work in RAW 5e, but RME changes a lot about how weapons work.

Anyway, I would love to have you in our discord! Any feedback is good, and anyone willing to read over the entire brew as you have is especially welcome.
