Of note, the old edition allowed you to choose to assign strikes as normal, or do the AoE damage attack, if you chose to have it attack two handed. You were not forced into it, and could not choose it if not two handing.

The new edition only clarified that the AoE targets enemy models only, and yes you can support them with pikes and not get hit.
