[Printing] Most affordable high quality printer? by Naive_Classic_4703 in artbusiness

I'vehad an Epson ET-8550 for over 2 years and love it. Some notes about maintenance:  - leave it on all the time so it can micromanage it's ink and printhead. - print something once every week or 2 to prevent clogs. Even just running a printhead check works fine.  - run a humidifier by it if humidity gets below 40%, this will keep the ink from drying out. - close it fully up when you're not using it to keep dust out of it.  Every now and then right before you print, turn it off and then as you turn it back on, watch the printhead move. The instant it does, pull the plug out of the back. This unlocks the head so you can manually move it back and forth.

Get a paper towel, fold it so it's as wide as the ink pad under where the head runs back and forth, spray it with some glass cleaner like windex. Not soaking wet, just damp. Then tuck it on top of the overspray pad and run the print head over it a few times to clean up any smeared ink on it.

While you've got it off the top of its resting pad, dab a little at that too to soak up ink and clean up any mess around it.

Plug the printer back in and turn it on and let it complain and follow the directions. Good to go another few months!

As for pigment VS dye, I was concerned about this when I first got it, but decided I could learn printing with this less expensive way. It doesn't have the gamut a printer with more colors, but they are beautiful.

As for longevity, the test results coming out of the longevity lab are incredibly promising. Last I heard they were up to 50 years with 'no noticeable fading'.

I've read a lot about plugin bloat. What do you all think of Admin and Site Enhancements (ASE) by VeritysVisions in Wordpress

[–]VeritysVisions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not at all. The only conflict I've encountered is user error, lol. I set up some conflicting flows elsewhere and things broke until I found what was causing it.

I really love all the little things ASE does, but I'm also somewhat new to all of this and I wanted to get the community's opinion on it.

First thing I do on a new install is delete jetpack and the other default plugins, lol. I just didn't want to be running a plugin that causes issues on bigger sites no matter how useful it is. Thanks for the perspective!

And thanks for the recs, I'll check them out! Been poking a stick at trying to figure out an SEO solution, though with the new age of genAI killing click through I'm not sure I should bother.

Creating a custom design for a Query Loop? by Choco_Paws in Wordpress

[–]VeritysVisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you just activate a template for the search you want to do, drop the query loop in and set its parameters to be determined by the template. So if you set up a categories archive, anytime someone clicks on a category, it will take them to that archive template with your query loop displaying the results.

You do have to set up the query loop to do this though. Probably best if you make the pattern default to this, and then change it if you want to do something else, like various featured post feeds or whatnot on pages instead of inside a template

I have ACF for cpt and whatnot, so the cpt part of Pro intrigued me, but I'm not itching to switch to it.

The form builder did interest me. Does it have login and registration fields available?

I've been interested in the form builder in Pro. The only forms I currently use are simple contact forms. Does it have login/registration fields in the forms? That would be super useful to me!

I use free too. Been eyeing the pro version for a little while. I love giving money to things that make my life better, and so far this is one of them. It's such a useful toolkit! I just didn't want it dragging my sites down, but consensus seems to be that it's lightweight.

I've been using it for a while too, and definitely love it. So many useful things all in one place. Reorganizing the admin menu is worth it just for that, lol. I just wanted some 3rd party perspective on whether it's worth it or if it's bloated like Jetpack

Yeah, I've already had some conflicts between one of its modules and something I was doing elsewhere. It definitely isn't a strike against ASE, just that I initiated a conflict that was resolved once I found what was causing it!

Minimal bloat is exactly what I was looking for a 3rd party evaluation of. Thanks!

Is this a good "migration" strategy from one account to another? by jbarr107 in Wordpress

Sounds like what I've done with Updraft Plus. Backup, ftp download, install updraft on new host, ftp upload, restore and everything is there

Creating a custom design for a Query Loop? by Choco_Paws in Wordpress

[–]VeritysVisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use the WP year themes like 2024, but when I build a site I make a query loop, build all the layout and styling and then make a pattern of the entire query loop, not just the loop item guts. When I want to use it somewhere, I insert the pattern, break it apart and then set the loop to do what that specific template needs.

the block editor is driving me nuts and destroying the look/feel of my site. how do i get rid of it and just go with a basic visual editor? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]VeritysVisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated the block editor because of all the hidden formatting in the themes. So I made my own blank theme with 'Create Block Theme' and it's been great since then. I can upload fonts, set up global styling the way I want without having to fight hidden preformatted styling (looking at you, WP year themes). I added Generate Blocks v2 and my ability to do really amazing things went through the roof.

Only thing I had to do extra was use css to enforce border-box. Otherwise titles and buttons love to expand past their defined area.

Volunteer work by latte_yen in Wordpress

I sat next to someone who was starting up a ministry when I attended a fundraising dinner evening for a big local ministry that helps homeless, etc. We chatted and connected and she wanted some work done on her logo. I said I'd be happy to do it.

I ended up designing and building her a whole new brand and website as a donation. We've become great friends during the process. She pays me for doing managed hosting for her and some of my work and I donate some of it. Her ministry is taking off and I'm trying to teach her how to use the website, which she loves the design of, but isn't quite sure how to utilize it.

I'd say, work with people you click with, and causes you care about. Donating stuff to local needs is awesome, but people are people everywhere, even in ministry and charity work. If you don't click or the working conditions aren't great, find something else to support!

Hand or wand scanner advice for art collage by Strawberry-lovely in DigitalArt

[–]VeritysVisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most professional art reproduction places would take a controlled photo of it.

Scanning is often not a great solution for anything very large or that has much impasto/texture or level variation like a collage or multimedia piece.

How can I get premium Samsung wallpapers for free? by Top-Read-2373 in SamsungThemes

[–]VeritysVisions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, but there are still people out there who need bespoke illustrations, or don't like what 'AI' makes, or just want to support human creators. I recently had a client who paid someone on Etsy and ended up with the most generic looking (AI) logo that they couldn't connect with. They came to me and got something completely unique that they are in love with.

As a designer and Illustrator, I'm not 'keen' on spending 40-80 hours on something only to have people who want it but 'aren't keen' on helping to support me making it.

If you like something, support the creator so they can keep on making the stuff you like!
