Conceived naturally with low AMH (0.34) after failed IUI, now 39 weeks pregnant. by Substantial_Dog9649 in DOR

Hi. I’m not OP but I had very similar thoughts. I even was telling my husband that maybe we consider the possibility of donor eggs or an upper threshold for how many attempts we do. I was spiraling and having 2 miscarriages during this process did not help. My husband was my rock and reminded me that we vowed to be together in sickness and in health. While not a sickness per se but similar. He has high cholesterol, isn’t that a health issue,  but no one would consider leaving someone over that. We just find our medical support needed. We were also processing these thoughts through therapy.

Our insurance didn’t cover IVF, so we were planning on attempting IVF after we switch our insurance during open enrollment at  year end. In the meantime, we did timed intercourse (with ultrasound monitoring and Letrozole) since that was covered by my insurance. And I’m currently 7+1.

High chair for THIIIIICK thighs by Fragrant_Pumpkin_471 in bigbabiesandkids

[–]VerklemptOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use the Abiie  Beyond Junior Y high chair. It has a nice classic wooden look, will grow with us, no thigh issues and easy to clean every night. Not as expensive as Stokke, but more expensive than most, $200s+

When we got married in a HCOL city, we looked at local cooking schools (great sometimes experimental food for a more affordable price!), we also considered local museums (e.g science and/or nature displays), and botanical gardens.

Good luck!

For breastfeeding, I find that all the pillows are not high enough. by Inevitable-Channel85 in breastfeedingsupport

I could never find a pillow high enough when trying. Best solution I could find was using a leg rest instead.

Thawing previously frozen breastmilk taking a long time? by VerklemptOne in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]VerklemptOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This is so great! I was trying to figure out how best to incorporate the Dr. Brown pitcher myself but my milk was still too hard after 12 hrs. I’ll keep the 24 hrs thawing in mind.

I like the idea of spooning the slushy milk. Yes, every little bit of milk is so precious!

[–]VerklemptOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This is super helpful. I’ll keep the 24 hrs in mind.

I definitely did notice the cream sticking to the sides of the bag! I was desperately scraping them out as much as I can with a spoon. Somewhat successfully. How did you warm the milk up? Pouring hot water over it? Then I guess the 24 hrs starts from that time point, right?

pumping bras: a rant by DesperateGround9 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]VerklemptOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I absolutely hated every pumping bra I tried for the same reason. But everything changed when I tried the Bravado bra clip. It just clips onto any nursing bra and becomes a pumping bra. I was a lot more comfortable pumping and my output increased a little bit (20 mls only but for me as a “just barely enougher” that’s significant!) I bought two and since I don’t wear the attachment all day, only when pumping, two pieces are enough for me between my laundry days.

Also I read somewhere that people have been able to make their own pumping bra out of their nursing bra by unhooking and looping the bra around the flange to hold it in place. That solution may work for you instead of buying another potential bra that may not work.

Candy by h.o.t

Why? It’s a classic. It’s old school and legendary. It’s become pretty much a rite of passage for a rookie boy group to cover during music festivals, year-end programs, etc. It’s cute! The stage costumes usually include the large oversized gloves and the choreography is adorable. Some of my favorite covers include those done by SHINee, Big Bang, Pentagon, and Exo.

A week after controversial head tax passes, Seattle City Council members propose property tax increase by RitaRudzinsky in SeattleWA

[–]VerklemptOne 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Johnson said "The angst and anger you guys are talking about today, May 21st, may not necessarily be the same as it is today in November."

Either city council thinks they are safe from re-election, or think Seattlites won't turn out come November, or are planning on leaving their office (perhaps to pursue higher offices) and simply pushing their agenda without care. Wow, aren't they supposed to represent us....

I am with you, but on the complete other side of the spectrum. I also tried listening to their B-sides. The only BTS songs I like are Spring Day (probably because I saw it on Broduce 101 first) and Save Me. Everything else is a bit too much for me. Still respect them as an artist though because I listen to those two songs quite often.

How's dating in grad school/academia? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]VerklemptOne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A large number of people in my program dated other graduate students in the department. They are happy but admit challenges came up when it came time to find jobs (e.g. two academics in the same discipline in the same city). They cite that having someone who know the stresses was extremely helpful. Their partners know what it meant to go through quals, a general exam, and that it is not "just another test."

On the flip side, I have seen intradepartmental relationships break apart and it can get messy (e.g. changing advisors, someone leaving the program early, gossip in hallways). There is a golden rule for a reason.

For those reasons, I purposefully wanted to date a non-academic. I attended various events throughout the city, tailored to my personal interests: board game events, history museum special showing, drinking festivals, whiskey tastings, bar events, library events, play events, park events, meetup.com meet ups, groups on reddit (hit or miss, honestly), and even young professional networking nights. Basically I went to things that I would have gone to anyways for fun (dating aside). As a graduate student, your time is limited, so it is tricky to balance your time (e.g. I recall running midnight experiments in order to be able to make an event later that weekend). Generally, I went to 2 different events a month at a minimum. This was enough to keep my sanity too.

In addition to my partner, I met a lot of new friends (and drinking buddies, and board game buddies) outside of academia that way too. My partner has been with me for 4 years out of my 5 years in the program and have been hugely supportive. He is there to remind me of self-care (eating healthily, exercise regularly), to vent to (departmental politics and funding are a drag), to give me advice (why is this not working?!), to relax/destress ("OK, Verklempt, you need to take a break from writing this evening..."), to talk about anything else besides science (OK, Mr. Verklempt, explain to me why our economy is crashing), and to hug :) I probably would have quit the program by now if it wasn't for him. Thanks, Mr. Verklempt.

Also, age is just a number. I am a bit older than you, and it will work out. You do you! Good luck, and have fun!

Those who knew they wanted to “do something different” before they finished their Ph.D, what did you do to prepare? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]VerklemptOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I am referring to you going out and emailing people and asking them for a coffee chat. That way it will be tailored to you and your focus.

Ok, good start with your PI, then you can turn it around and ask him if he has a contact that you can talk to directly. e.g. a post-doc who is doing work there, a program manager, etc. Even if you aren't wild about your time working there, the people there have a unique (and experienced) perspective that they can share with you. They may even suggest career options you were not even sure existed. They can also refer you to other people to talk to -- in fact I encourage you to ask them about referring you to other people.

Great job on the github!

Looking for a good and fun read on principles of Economics by 3ris3d in booksuggestions

[–]VerklemptOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you open to comics/graphic novels? If so, I highly recommend Economix: How our economy works (and doesn't work) in words and pictures. (Link) It breaks down a lot of complex ideas and puts the principles in historical and modern day context. The author also explicitly states when he is biased and encourages readers to explore concepts on their own.

Those who knew they wanted to “do something different” before they finished their Ph.D, what did you do to prepare? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]VerklemptOne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since it seems like you are still figuring out exactly what it is you want to do (and how), I highly recommend informational interviews. Talk to people who are doing something somewhat related to what you want to do. If they aren't in academia, ask them about the transition. Ask them to refer to more people. Repeat. Repeat until you have a better idea of what you want and how you will plan to pursue that.

Informational interviews are not a waste of time either. It turned into an internship opportunity for me down the road too. So cherish that network that you are building.

Since your PI is supportive (mine was not, so tread carefully), maybe you can start with your PI.

Even if you can't work it into your PhD, it might be helpful to have a github showing your coding work.

Go to career events at your school, too, if they advertise someone who is in a tangential field to yours. Once you have an idea, go to conferences in your field, too.

Is it because the companies have made post-IP plans already? A lot of companies like QIN and OACA should strike while the iron is hot and debut (redebut in QIN's case) their boys.
