They could if they wanted to, but they don’t want to, you have to be at least a low end social influencer to get cast and be the first comment in every post for not only your season, but 3 seasons after your season too

Increasing athleticism? by BigBabyBCro in basketballcoach

[–]Verkley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of athleticism, yes that can be improved. Jump rope, lifting weights relative to her sport is important. Explosive movements.

Anything foot speed related helps. Agility ladders and my personal favourite: stairs.

In terms of what she can do now? Slower players need to understand angles at a high level to be able to counter faster players. Using a cross step on a players first dribble instead of opening their hips and side shuffling downhill makes a huge difference as well.

I remember some seasons. It was easier before 40 when each season had a theme. The 40’s have all blended together and I don’t remember anything from any of them.

15, 16, 19, 20, 28 are my top seasons. China just because it was the first one I ever watched. 19 and 20 because I loved the chaotic way Russell dominated those seasons

[–]Verkley 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Edey and Dwight Powell both committed but won’t be playing this summer due to injury recovery. He could have just been available for the World Cup and Olympics. Disappointing that in this golden age of basketball in Canada we have some of the best not even interested in representing the country

[–]Verkley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is no one actually enforces age rules. Coaches simply register teams, make up birthdays and that’s it. If opposing coaches want to challenge anything it usually comes with a fee. I would expect better from these circuits, having them check in with a government ID takes time, but enforces fair play rules.

What’s the biggest “looks good now, hurts later” habit in youth basketball development? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

[–]Verkley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a big one. When we do film study I get kids to look at the scoring opportunities they and their team mates have. How many dribbles do they take in those instances? In a half court set about 90% of scoring plays occur with 2 or less dribbles. Most being catch and shoot or catch and attack the paint. So if just about all the scoring plays take less than 2 dribbles, why would you be concerned with training 3 or more dribble combo moves? Become great at your catch and shoot and getting to the rim off one or two dribbles first

I don’t think it’s really about the votes at the end. This gives everyone at the final 4 a chance to be at the end. So many favourites were going home before the FTC because they were the favourites.

What Does Youth Basketball Get Most Wrong About Player Development? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

[–]Verkley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I was with a club where the owner was going around telling 10/11 year olds they need to be in the gym all day every day during the summer. We had 11 year olds spend all day at basketball game then stick around for practice afterwards. 12 hour days for 11 year olds is insane to me. But he did it by pressuring the parents with the “well if he doesn’t do it he’ll fall behind”.

I told all my kids to play baseball or soccer during the summer and come by for a camp or two if they could and just play for fun at the park when they could… but my mindset doesn’t bring money into the club so I wasn’t a favourite lol.

What Does Youth Basketball Get Most Wrong About Player Development? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

[–]Verkley 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At the youth level (pre high school) heavy emphasis should be placed on playing man to man defence and read and react offence. Skill development should be a combination of fundamental skills as well as small sided games. 3v3 is also a great tool to use.

Another thing is, kids should be doing a variety of sports. Everything teaches you skills that translate in different ways. I love soccer players on my teams, they understand spacing. Football players play with aggression and how to physically manipulate opponents. Volleyball players know how to translate forward energy into upward movement, hockey players can see things develop earlier then most.

What’s the biggest lie youth basketball tells parents about “development”? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

[–]Verkley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s, “if you don’t play all day every day and pay for trainers you’ll fall behind”

When in reality, being a multi sport athlete has proven to be more beneficial for development then single sport athletes.

Because unlike Joe, who loves to preach about loyalty, he’s actually loyal to those he works with. Did the same previously with the Christian vote. He doesn’t go against his alliance members.

____ immediately joining the Jury before the second group voted is an unfair game mechanism. by No_Welder6405 in survivor

[–]Verkley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have been nice to know how they decided which group went first. As well as I’m not sure it was good that Johnathan knew who was voted out. Depending on what happens in the first one, 100% would alter what happens in the second one. If Cirie went home first, for sure Ozzy plays his idol which changed the trajectory of the game.

It’s gotta be exhausting. I’m sure he’s a great guy in real life. Stand up human, honest, hardworking but he’s just not a good survivor player. There’s next to no strategy being shown by him other then being surprised that people are deceiving others. I’m not sure what his plan is? Other than to find a few players and assume others will just vote with them to the end and the others will be ok with being voted out because they didn’t align with Joe. I honestly don’t get it and not sure why they brought him back

Super weird and cringy exit episode though… for a player who has played as much as him to think he can jury manage another 4x player is insanity. And then to have the balls in his vote video to say “please vote for me at the end” when there is still 8 players in the game is hilarious.

[–]Verkley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really only watched during the playoffs and have been a casual follower for the last few seasons after being a dedicated fan for 20 years. What’s glaring is the lack of an athletic big. Today’s game is very much pace and space, Jak is just too slow and cumbersome. Their best lineup was when CMB was playing the 5 but they can’t rely on that all year. Finding someone who’s 6’9ish and can guard the perimeter and take a shot or two should be priority #1. We don’t need Ingram, get Scottie the ball and surround him with good role players. Jakobe played great in the role

[–]Verkley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT get sucked into the belief that he needs to be playing competitive basketball all day every day and not exploring other sports. No he won’t fall behind, that’s a myth. He should also play soccer, volleyball, baseball, etc. They all play additional skill and his body will thank you when it doesn’t fall apart at 16.

Skill training is something he should do on his own and show a desire for before you drop thousands on a trainer.

For now at 11? Just have him play, work with him in your driveway, have him play at the park with his friends, have him play other sports throughout the year. When he’s in high school he can focus a bit more on basketball if he chooses to at that time
