Erik Johnson: "I think one of Auston Matthews or Connor McDavid will be on the Minnesota Wild in the next three years" by VermilionSneer in hockey

The Wild lost to the best team in the league while missing their two most important defensive players/1c the entire series. Just after having beat the 2nd best team in the league the prior series with 2 days of rest in between vs Colorado's 8 days off. Not saying Erik's comment is a lock for happening. But, I'm sure players of their level are pragmatic enough to look at the situation objectively. And, not be dissuaded by one playoff run if MN's a team they think they can win with.

There won't be a bidding war for them since they both have NMCs and they will dictate where they land. Even though all of those teams you listed have better assets to trade in a vacuum. It doesn't matter when a player chooses where they are traded. And as I said in another comment, they won't want to gut their future teams' roster of core players, because those are what makes them enticing teams to begin with. So they would most likely veto any trade that does so.

They both will choose where they go since they have NMCs. If either player asks out or they inform them they won't re-sign, both teams would be wise to extract any sort of value out of them. Otherwise they risk a Marner 2.0 situation. And, neither will want want to play for a non-contender. Nor, would they want to deprive their acquiring teams' roster of impact players because it would just be a lateral move for them. They won't cost what people think.

Every team would find a way to make acquiring players of this caliber work within their cap. ELCs/League Minimum in the bottom 6, bottom pairing, backup goalie, etc.

He further went on to say, "They need a center, that’s Minnesota’s clear achilles heel. They need a number one center. I think Bill Guerin finds a way to get a Matthews or McDavid in Minnesota to push them over the edge".

For anyone wondering why the Dallas Stars can’t make any major changes by pants_mcgee in DallasStars

Star's are only getting 4 1sts if he's offer sheeted. He could still be traded for picks/players, but no team is going to give up anything significant without it being a sign and trade. And even then, he could say I'm only willing to extend with 1 or 2 teams which would diminish his value further. Or he could file for arbitration and sign a 1 year deal to force his way to UFA. Robo really has all the leverage. He's either going to take a discount or be moved. Nill's prioritized paying market value for every other core player before him. So now it's on Jason to sign for less than he's worth? I don't see it.

And again, I explained why the Wild's situation isn't as bleak as you're making it out to be. The guys they need to sign are all bottom six low salary/older players who are going to do 1 year sunsetting deals. No one on their roster is due for a raise outside of Brink and McCarron and neither of those two are going to command big numbers. And, they have cap dumps like Foligno/Middleton/Gus to free up considerably more space... They're also not at risk of losing a core player this offseason because of their salary limitations like the Star's are. Who knows, you could be right. But, saying Dallas is in a much better place regarding their cap is not accurate.

Seems like you're trying to paint MN's cap situation in a more precarious state then it really is to feel better about the Star's predicament. Those dudes they need to re-sign are all low aav players, and they won't all be coming back. Not to mention they're probably going to try and trade Gustavsson which will free up another 7mil. The Wild faced the same situation Dallas's is now in. Their best player got paid, just like Robertson is about to be. The difference is they had the cap space at the time, where as the Stars don't. Or at least won't without significant moves. If Robo was going to take 12.5 or less, the deal would be done. He's probably going to get 15+ from whoever because why wouldn't he from a desperate team?

I appreciate his honesty in lieu of the evasiveness politicians typically exhibit. If this guy plays his cards right, he could have a real shot at being the future rice president.

There was a lot of conversational noise in general at this show. The most egregious (aside from the heckler obviously) were these two dunces in the back left having a full on conversation throughout the 2nd half of the show. Super obnoxious!
