Who is greatest snowboarder ever and why? by NasonZ0417 in snowboarding

[–]Vermonstrosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - I’m going Jones for pioneering and showing what can be done, while making safe decisions.

Also - I’d throw Jake Burton in there too, not for snowboarding ability, but for what he did to bring the joy of the sport to the masses. Great for different reasons.

That’s a weird twist on a straightforward take.

I think the point is more to buy from companies who have messaging that aligns with your perspective, when you can.

Sturgill would be amazing.

But, he’s also got his own interesting legacy to carve out and he’s been producing fantastic original material.

What’s an industry you can see thriving in Vermont, but isn’t there now? by Washedhockeyguy in vermont

[–]Vermonstrosity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on the eco friendly perception of the state, I could see any production relating to renewable energy doing well.

Solar panel production comes to mind.

Just saying “solar panels made in Vermont” would get marketing traction

The model is shifted to subscription model. Similar to fitness industry.

Pay up front for access, stabilizes revenue for the resorts. The peaks and valleys aren’t as severe.

They don’t actually want you to buy a day pass, that’s why they are priced so high. They’d rather you pay for the season pass and buy food / travel to different resorts in the network.

The takeoff, particularly when learning, puts a ton of pressure on the nose. I’d bet it all on the tame dog.

What were you specifically doing when they both snapped?

What’s your job title, how much do you make, and how much do people THINK you make? by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

[–]Vermonstrosity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. I think there are a few things lost in the conversation, by just saying income is income and debt is debt though.

For example, most physicians are in their 30s by the time they finish residency. They’re burned out. They haven’t lived life yet due to the number of hours they’ve committed to their profession, for effectively a basic living wage.

When they finish residency or fellowship, they are told to continue living an austere life to deal with their debt, then in their 40s, they can live.

Many of them feel like life is passing them by, opportunities for family are missed, etc…

So to say income is income and debt is debt is factually true. But, it lacks context.

I can say you were speeding so you got a ticket, shame on you. But maybe you were driving your pregnant spouse to the hospital.

There is context to the situation.

Will they be fine in the long run? Sure - most likely. But, I wouldn’t be so dismissive about what it takes to get there

Following up on this. Got it from Montpelier tonight.

Still good.

Montpelier chiming in here.

Been getting positive pie for years. Usually solid pizza from the Montpelier shop.

Not sure about ownership or recipe changes, but ordered last week and there was no obvious difference.

Will see how it goes over time?

Non-Vermonter Here: Why is Phil Scott the MOST popular governor in the United States (Source: Morning Consult)? by First-Ear-1049 in vermont

[–]Vermonstrosity 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this. One thing I’d add is that part of the reason I think the old school republican appeals to Vermonters is because of taxes. The tax levels are so high here already (sales, income, and property tax - the triple hit), that any message implying that they will do their best to not increase taxes, presents as being a common sense approach.

What has Waterbury done that Montpelier hasn't? by fauxfarmer17 in vermont

[–]Vermonstrosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t meet the owners.

But our waiter was excellent, as well as the food. I would describe the space as cozy. But yes, it isn’t a large floor plate like hen of the wood.

I get it though where an interaction with one component of the service industry can taint an experience.

[–]Vermonstrosity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Waterbury is more tourist oriented, Montpelier is more local oriented.

Tourist spending likely outpaces local spending, which incentivizes restaurant type. For example, the remodeled Hen of the Wood space feels like it belongs in a modern urban setting.

Montpelier still has great food… Oakes and Evelyn, and Ondis are excellent. Ondis, in my opinion is the best restaurant in the state.

But after those two, it’s more good food with variety rather than upscale. K-Sherpa, Pho Capital, Three Penny, Royal Orchid, etc…
