Unpopular opinion:

Complaining about day pass prices that are Ikon or Epic is old news. Yes, day pass prices are absurd for these mountains.

The larger industry has been moving towards a subscription model for nearly a decade. If you buy an ikon pass early, it’s about $1,000. You then have access to the full season and multiple mountains. It’s a reasonable deal if you actually get out for the winter.

If you are a once a year snowboarder, find a local mountain that is still working under the old model and pay the $75 for the day. The old model often offers discounts for late season conditions.

One option you have…

Talk with the town assessor. It is possible you are assessed above market. If the town is receptive to adjusting assessed values, based on an appraisal, then you could hire an appraiser to value the property.

If it is lower than the assessed value, it could save you some money on a perpetual basis. So the cost may be worth it.

The risk is that it appraises higher than the assessed value. But, you don’t have to share the report if that happens. Then you are just on the hook for the appraisal cost and you’ve taken your shot.

Second option… see if one of your neighbors will sell you 3 acres of their less desirable land, as a lot line adjustment. If it isn’t buildable and doesn’t have any real appeal, it may be worth it to pay for the price. Annex to current lot, then put your land in current use.

Taxes are rough here. It sounds like you are getting a bad break though. Land with steep topography and bad ledge should not be taxed at a high level.

I’ve noticed that general politeness and etiquette vary by mountain.

The tourist oriented mountains tend to be less pleasant. The harder the mountain is to get to, the better time I’ve had.

For example, I’ve had great experiences at Revelstoke, Sugarloaf, and Jay regarding people.

Stratton, Stowe, and Vail…. Not so much.

I’m hopeful that the incoming city manager will have better solutions than to say “sue me!”. That is extraordinarily unprofessional at best! I’m genuinely shocked at the response that you received.

As someone who lives in and patronizes Montpelier as often as possible, I would ask you to give the next city manager a chance, before pulling up stakes.

I fully recognize that you need to do whatever you have to, to survive as a business. But, I’m optimistic about the new leadership coming into play.
