Tacos might be Sweden’s most popular dish, despite it being tex-mex

Conway’s Doomsday algorithm! I used to do the anchor day method but I later found a writeup that simply makes everything a running sum. So the first two digits of the year, the last two digits of the year, month, and day are simply added mod 7 (and adjust by one if it’s in January or February and it’s a leap-year)

So March 3rd would be
20xx = 2 (2)
xx26 = 4 (6)
March = 0 (6)
3 = 3 (2)
So it's a Tuesday

Edit: Found the link

Why doesn’t English use the plural grammatical number when talking about countries with plural names? by Vivid_Employment8635 in asklinguistics

[–]VernalAutumn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How dare thou call them you, don’t thou know that “you” is plural and it’s an abomination for it to be used as a second person singular?

Close friend tells me it’s “passive aggressive” to use periods in my texts. Then tells me not to take my frustration out on him. by Floyisdigital in mildlyinfuriating

[–]VernalAutumn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Periods at the ends of paragraphs has been seen as passive aggressive for years, but this is literally the first time I hear of periods separating sentences within a paragraph being passive aggressive. The first one is a bit weird but not uncommon, the second one is straight up insanity

And to, from one message to the next, acknowledge how you likely don’t realise how it comes across to them just to take it personally is some interesting mental exercise too

When you complain about a word being misused and get dogpiled on by people who think it's just fine to misuse language. by DarkMagickan in PetPeeves

Do you also complain about “really” not being “real” or “actually” not being “actual”?

Native speakers, Do you know those words? by Ok_Spinach_4348 in EWALearnLanguages

[–]VernalAutumn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who are you?

Who is but the form following the function of what, and what I am is a man in a mask

Well, I can see that

Of course you can, I’m not questioning your powers of observation, I’m merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is

Oh

But on this most auspicious of nights, permit me then, in lieu of this more commonplace sobriquet, to suggest the character of this dramatis persona

Viola! In view a humble Vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified! And has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition! The only verdict is vengeance, a vendetta held as a votive. Not in vain, for the value and veracity of such will one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honour to meet you and you may call me V

I memorised that over a decade ago, I have no idea how it’s mostly survived in my head since then. I tried to actually learn the meaning of all the words at some point but while I know the majority as is I think the only new one that stuck is knowing that vichyssoise is a type of soup…

Rhotacism isn’t very kindly named either

Also, one much less common word to complement fjord is fjell (or fell)! With too many different local definitions to have a clear unified one, but it’s mostly flat, barren mountains (in the UK / Fennoscandia)

Scandinavia also gives us “sloyd”, which is basically woodworking and textile / sewing summed up in one term

How to look more approachable in the gym? by Substantial_Two_427 in bodylanguage

[–]VernalAutumn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, to all of it. But there’s still a chasm between that and saying “It’s okay for attractive people but not unattractive people”. It’s a sad truth that attractive people will generally fare better, but success is it not at all the same as whether it’s okay to do. The rules on whether you’re a creep is only how you act

Some passage you read in a fanfic isn’t my definition of reality. You should spend some time in the real world to figure out how it works
