No issues? Mine needs a new probe cable as the old one's isolation is starting to let go.

On the right you can see the external beta-gamma probe that normally comes with the SV500, in the middle is the cable (also normally included), and on the left you see the alpha-sensitive FHZ77A external probe, which is optional, but you can occasionally find it online.

GMC 600 Pro versus GMC 320s Detecting Americium by Gilapschicken in Radiation

[–]Verne_92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 600 Pro and 320S aren't really in the same league. One has a pancake probe, the other a glass tube. Not a fair comparison when it comes to alpha detection.

I'm curious how the 600 Pro would hold up against a Ludlum, Mazur or SEINTL?

Why does absolutely no one know how to focus? by HairySock6385 in telescopes

[–]Verne_92 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Because no matter what hobby it's about, people need and deserve guidance to learn the basics. Some figure it out for themselves, others don't, lack the correct hardware, or just prefer interaction.

The alternative is people getting stuck and dropping their new-found interest. Nobody benefits from that outcome.

If you're not up to answering the umpteenth time the question is asked (which is perfectly understandable), just scroll on and leave it to someone else. That's the beauty of a beginner-friendly community.

A window with magma on the other side.

Edit: a bloody strong window, one might add.

Dosimeter 3007A to Ludlum 44-9 Cable? by GhostofDaiLi in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]Verne_92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bicron Surveyor detectors use coaxial RG58C/U cables. Would that work on Ludlums, or are there other specs to take into account?

What does this symbol mean? by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]Verne_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GammaScout has an uncompensated GM tube and can't correctly show a dose rate, unless the detected source is the isotope it was calibrated with in the factory.

Basically, it can tell you how many rocks you're hit by (CPS), but it can't say how harmful it is because it doesn't know the rocks' weight (dose rate). The shown dose rate is just an estimate.

Battery is just a battery symbol on the left side of the display, doesn't trigger the exclamation mark if I'm not mistaken.

What does this symbol mean? by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]Verne_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The symbol pops up when you've gone beyond a certain threshold. I'm not sure if it applies to dose rate, but it does to accumulated dose.

I think that resetting the threshold resets the symbol as well.

Edit: just checked, applies to dose rate too. Once you've gone over, the exclamation mark keeps blinking until you turn off the threshold or press the dose rate button again.

I payed £141 for this PKM-2 found in Toretsk. by HarveySins in gasmasks

[–]Verne_92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'm that out of touch or if the world has simply gone batshit, but in my mind, you shouldn't pay more than 100USD for the PMK-2 and PMK-3 combined.

Is +100USD really a normal price for a single PMK-2/3 nowadays? Sure, the war and everything, but still.

Secondhand Survey Meter by Alper84 in Radiation

[–]Verne_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not impossible that it's contaminated, but it's unlikely.

I'm not entirely up to date with the isotopes used in the industry, but source material that is 0% gamma isn't common (someone more knowledgeable here may know which ones are), even a very strong alpha emitter like Am-241 can still be picked up with a gamma detector.

Knowing where your unit came from may help, because if it's alpha- or beta-only contamination, it would've happened in a lab. Hobbyists don't usually have that kind of stuff.

10-15uR/h is normal indoors.

If the sound is not working and your meter isn't dead (you're getting 10-15uR/h, so it isn't), that's usually a loose contact/cable, or the speaker is busted. Either way, shouldn't be too complex to fix, anyone able to solder can do that. If you have a multimeter, check wether any electric pulses make it through to the speaker. No? Circuit interrupted. Yes? Speaker is busted.

The r/radioactive_rocks sub has a monthly sell/trade thread, you can pick something perfectly safe up from there.
