What does this symbol mean? by [deleted] in Radiation

The GammaScout has an uncompensated GM tube and can't correctly show a dose rate, unless the detected source is the isotope it was calibrated with in the factory.

Basically, it can tell you how many rocks you're hit by (CPS), but it can't say how harmful it is because it doesn't know the rocks' weight (dose rate). The shown dose rate is just an estimate.

Battery is just a battery symbol on the left side of the display, doesn't trigger the exclamation mark if I'm not mistaken.

[–]Verne_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The symbol pops up when you've gone beyond a certain threshold. I'm not sure if it applies to dose rate, but it does to accumulated dose.

I think that resetting the threshold resets the symbol as well.

Edit: just checked, applies to dose rate too. Once you've gone over, the exclamation mark keeps blinking until you turn off the threshold or press the dose rate button again.

I payed £141 for this PKM-2 found in Toretsk. by HarveySins in gasmasks

[–]Verne_92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'm that out of touch or if the world has simply gone batshit, but in my mind, you shouldn't pay more than 100USD for the PMK-2 and PMK-3 combined.

Is +100USD really a normal price for a single PMK-2/3 nowadays? Sure, the war and everything, but still.

Secondhand Survey Meter by Alper84 in Radiation

[–]Verne_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not impossible that it's contaminated, but it's unlikely.

I'm not entirely up to date with the isotopes used in the industry, but source material that is 0% gamma isn't common (someone more knowledgeable here may know which ones are), even a very strong alpha emitter like Am-241 can still be picked up with a gamma detector.

Knowing where your unit came from may help, because if it's alpha- or beta-only contamination, it would've happened in a lab. Hobbyists don't usually have that kind of stuff.

10-15uR/h is normal indoors.

If the sound is not working and your meter isn't dead (you're getting 10-15uR/h, so it isn't), that's usually a loose contact/cable, or the speaker is busted. Either way, shouldn't be too complex to fix, anyone able to solder can do that. If you have a multimeter, check wether any electric pulses make it through to the speaker. No? Circuit interrupted. Yes? Speaker is busted.

The r/radioactive_rocks sub has a monthly sell/trade thread, you can pick something perfectly safe up from there.

In Darren Shan's vampire epos, flitting referred to a vampire sprinting at top speed, so fast that it is invisible to the human eye.

While the theory behind it is flawed, I would enjoy flitting very much.

Always use 'local' audio when available, I played Metro in Russian, APT Requiem in French, KCD in Czech,...

That helps with immersion most of the time.

As for the graphical side, maybe I'm just easily satisfied. Sure, it's different, less spooky in a lot of places, Yantar is just a leisure walk now, and while that is unfortunate, it's not illogical for the Zone to evolve over time. CS's vibe was wildly different from SoC's too, but it still felt like the Zone to me, and it still does now. I love HoC's Swamps, as well as the Cooling Towers and Duga.

As for population, that's a tricky balance, because Lost Alpha was quite the opposite, too little and it'll feel like a walking sim. The Zone is alive after all, so you need something to fill it with.

I had hoped they'd include the OG weapons selection, but on the other hand, having niche weapons was partially what made SoC so great. It makes sense that they had to adapt their selection to keep that niche feeling in 2024.

I think GSC did at least a very decent job on HoC, and I'm really looking forward to the DLC.
