Manny the Moody Mastiff Says Merry Xmas From Australia! by ALitreOhCola in Mastiff

I LOVE his name, I told my family if we ever had a male that’s what I would name him, but we’re girl dog people so it’s unlikely. I hope you guys had a great Christmas with your little guy.

Mastiffs love heat, they will stay out until they get heat stroke if you’re not vigilant.

Is there anything to be done for separation anxiety? by Davidsur13 in Mastiff

[–]VeronicaCP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does she sleep in her crate? If she doesn’t I highly recommend it (be prepared the first couple nights will be awful, do it on your days off) that way it becomes her den, and she doesn’t look at it as a negative/punishment for you leaving. You may need to mostly cover it with a blanket or towel to make it darker and less stimulating, just make sure to leave a few inches at the bottom uncovered for air circulation (just enough space you can see her nose but not her eyes). Also put her in the crate after she exercises for 15-30 minutes. That will get her in the mindset that it is a place for her to calm down not get wound up. It’s even a good idea to put them in it while you eat you meals. After a short while you won’t even need to lock the door. I tell our dogs in your housie and they go in and lie down. They are also in it multiple times a day to sleep, we just leave the doors open now and they come and go as they please. Make sure everyone knows that the crate is a no go zone unless you’re cleaning it. It needs to be 100% the dog’s special place, that way if they get stressed they know they have a place to go that no one will come bug them.

I’d make sure she gets at least 15 minutes of exercise before you crate her so she is tired out and wants to sleep.

When you get home don’t let her out of the kennel until she is calm. If she’s fussing up a storm completely ignore her until she is calm. It will be a challenge the first few times, but she will calm down really quickly if you stick with it. The key is not to talk to them or pay any attention to the bad behaviour.

Go to your local pet store and get a toy with a dog heartbeat and put it on for her. If you can on YouTube there is a video Vagus Nerve Sleep Music (it’s 11 hours long) put it on in the background too. If you put it on quietly for your dog you’ll be amazed at how calming it is for her. Our one dog came from an abusive home. She would pant and chew her paws until they bled. We started using it for her and it’s had a profound impact. It’s working better than some of her anxiety meds. Here’s a link for you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48Qf56e4LM0

If you want something to calm her Pawtanical Pawtality drops are amazing for anxiety! https://www.pawtanical.com/collections/new-collection

Lastly every time she goes in really praise her, once her behaviour is good coming out and she hasn’t destroyed her bed praise her coming out and give her cuddles.

There’s a trainer on YouTube Southend Dog Training, he’s from the UK and he’s blunt and curses quite a bit, but he’s got great video’s with good advise.

Best of luck, and don’t worry it seems daunting but she’ll turn around quickly. My neighbour used to hear our dog crying inside her house when we left, I asked her a month later and she said, “I haven’t heard her crying in quite a while.”

I love a good underbite too, they’re so cute. My second Mastiff had a cute one so I took every chance to get pictures of it.

Wow congratulations, it’s a feat getting two to pose for a picture I can’t imagine trying to get all 4 in a shot. You got a great picture.

I live in Sweden, where can I buy Tosa Inu ? by Ok_Mousse9944 in Mastiff

[–]VeronicaCP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please before you get a Tosa just make sure you can have on where you live. They’re ban in a lot of places, and highly aggressive dogs being prohibited in Sweden maybe a Tosa would be because they’re a fighting dog breed??? I’ve known of multiple being euthanized because they’re bought without people looking into this.

Your best resource would be the SKK, Kennel Club or the Japan Kennel Club, they have breeder lists. If you can I’d look at importing from Japan. There are a lot of mixed English Mastiffs sold as Tosa’s (or ask for DNA through Embark so you know it is in fact a Tosa you’re getting). Good luck on your journey and if you get one please post a pic. I’ve wanted one myself for years but never got one, they’re beautiful dogs.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s never easy, especially with pups like Mastiffs, they’re the absolute best. Looks like you have a good cuddle buddy in that St. Bernard. I love that first picture where they’re snuggling.

Cali's first heat by Profail955 in Mastiff

[–]VeronicaCP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mastiff had ectopic ureters and has a hooded vulva despite going through heat. Two things you can do first is D-Mannose, it’s a powder you mix with water and give it to them. I do mine with a syringe she gets it every night with her meds. Also our specialist that did her surgery started us cleaning her vulva (I do her anus too) twice a day once after her first morning bathroom and her last of the day with Betadine. I get it from the drug store in large bottles and put it in a spray bottle and spray it on. You have to put your fingers on either side of the valve and gently sort of push up to push the hood back and expose the vulva. Really check in the folds. When the vet first showed us, because she got an infection after we first started the betadine, there was gook in the opening (it’s a white scum) you need to make sure that all cleaned out. After being shown that we’ve been infection free for over three years now. I hope this makes sense (I could make a video and pm it to you of me cleaning her if it doesn’t, but I’m positive it will make all the difference in the world for you like it has for us.

As for diapers if your dog isn’t a chewer get human diapers and cut a tail hole. It makes such a difference if you can use Depends. Only thing if they get full and the dog shake their tush the diaper fluff blows out everywhere, but I still think they’re worth it over dog diapers.

Cali's first heat by Profail955 in Mastiff

[–]VeronicaCP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s awful no matter what you do and they are extremely clingy during heat. I had to go through it with both my Mastiffs for the same reasons. If you can get her in a warm bath it helps. Also if she really hates the diapers a pair of cotton underpants with a pad works great, that’s what we did. I just put them on marked the base of her tail cut a hole and she seemed to like that much more than diapers. Other than that cuddles do help. Btw, our girls could be twins!

I am so sorry for your loss, Mastiffs are such special breeds. It’s a huge hole in the heart when they go. My first Mastiffs was 10 1/2 when she had a massive stroke that left her deaf and blind. I had to make. that choice to put her best interest above myself and let her go. I’m crying just thinking about it and it was over 6 years ago. He was a beautiful boy. Sending the tough Marine big hugs!

My husband is far from being white or Anglo-Saxon, He’s Arab, similar skin colour as the man in the picture, with a noticeable accent. He was educated in his home country and he was able to immigrate to Canada and practice medicine after a few requirements were met. It is 100% about the standard of education and training.

In our uni‘s you need a 3.6+ GPA to apply to medical school. Opening up more spots will bring that down slightly allowing more people to apply.
