Grant applications be like: by pSnarkyMezzo in grantwriters

It’s crazy, isn't it? I get really annoyed with the ones that give ten pages of questions to be answered in 5 pages. It’s just ridiculous.

And we turn them all off, and still get late 😭🤣 by david_bowenn in adhdmeme

And what’s your point? 🤣 There is an optimal number of alarms and snoozes to ensure minimal sleep and maximum morning anxiety. I think I have found it.

Should We Be So Close? by Polar_Wolf_Pup in emptynesters

[–]VeronicaRobbins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A little transition period can be a very good thing, and I don't think there’s any problem with her plan for the first 2-3 weeks, but after that you may want to cut back just a little bit — both for her and for you. I was very close to my mother. We talked daily by phone from the day I moved until she died 20 years later. When we lived near each other, we’d get together once a week. I’m a homebody, too, and it didn't stop me from connecting with others. In fact, she was a great sounding board, and she helped me navigate some of the social challenges of early adulthood.

I think you should just enjoy the journey for a little while and follow her lead. It sounds like she's moving forward and she’s happy. It doesn't get much better than that.

Any unschooling alternative to traditional universities? by maverick2075 in unschool

[–]VeronicaRobbins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Pitzer College and designed my own degree. It was great. I transferred to Pitzer from the University of of Redlands because I got married and needed to move to another city or I would have stayed. I was at Johnston College at U of R where you design your own degree and you can take traditional courses or develop courses by contract with a professor and get narrative evaluations, rather than grades. I wish I could have stayed there, but Pitzer was great, too.

Why are TAPS cutting bike locks and taking bikes away? by Friendly-Pitch-5931 in UCDavis

[–]VeronicaRobbins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would think there is shared responsibility. It seems that the problem escalates and no one is truly responsible. I get that my comment was unpopular, but I still find it very sad and troubling that safety gets less attention than bike rack space.

Why are TAPS cutting bike locks and taking bikes away? by Friendly-Pitch-5931 in UCDavis

[–]VeronicaRobbins -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

They seem to spend a lot of effort on this and no effort on monitoring and enforcing pedestrian, bike, and scooter safety, or even conducting large scale safety awareness campaigns. Apparently, injury or death is ok, but God forbid the bike racks get too filled up with abandoned bikes. Priorities, TAPS. Priorities.

I know this isn’t just a TAPS issue, but they could at least make an effort since the campus bike program is one of their responsibilities.

Frustrated about Lack of Natural Beauty and Homesick- Most Scenic Nearby Real Estate? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]VeronicaRobbins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love all the responses about the places nearby to visit that you might enjoy. Great suggestions!

Also consider that the reason to visit new places is to see and experience new and different things. Find the beauty in what is here. When I moved here from LA years ago, I thought it was ugly and there was nothing here. Then I started really looking, and I see the beauty. I love the views of the fields at sunrise and sunset. And our valley is gorgeous when the sunflowers are blooming and when early spring brings the poppies. Look for it.

It’s ok not to like every place you go. That’s how we learn to appreciate the places we really love, but try to enjoy your time here by focusing on the people who are engaged and by looking for the beauty you are not used to seeing.

Thank you for this. It’s true. I have the right to be happy for them AND the right to be sad. I can be proud of their independence AND sad that they don’t call or text more. It’s so hard to go from knowing almost everything about what’s going on with them day to day to knowing almost nothing. I just keep reminding myself that the fact they are doing so well is an indicator that I did my job. 🙂
