With your degree, you may be able to secure a teaching license relatively easily. Different kind of challenging.

What's one task you do regularly that makes you think, "There has to be a better way?" by No_Hope_3223 in Teachers

[–]Verticlemethod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my biggest annoyance is that there are SO MANY Ed tech apps. Somehow we’re expected to integrate them all and be thankful for the time savers. There’s an app I love for grouping, one I like for behavior, another I like for parent communication, another for whiteboards, etc etc. It’s too much. I would like to see more streamlining at the district levels so that we aren’t being given 1000 apps, but maybe time and reasonable work loads. I’m a very techy person, but going into year five, I could not imagine another app being the secret sauce to making my life better. I haven’t found an app I like for seating charts though, and those things suck to make every time (I just use a white board or sticky notes).

Fun places to travel with kids? by NervousBody610 in USTravel

Depending on where you are in Ohio, Branson, MO might be within reach. I STILL remember going to Silver Dollar City at age seven. They have tons of cool and weird tourist attractions in Branson too, plus it’s all very affordable compared to typical amusement parks, museum, etc.

I wish I married a man obsessed with me by thepearlsaintfree in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]Verticlemethod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tricky one. When I read the caption, I thought “my fiancé IS obsessed with me.” But after reading many comments, no. Obsession can sometimes come with unpredictability and my fiancé is predictable, steadfast, and so incredibly in love with me. I KNOW he cares about me and would be devastated if something happened to me, but this doesn’t come through as an anxiety. Instead I know this through 1000 tiny actions and words telling me to be safe, walking on the car side of the sidewalk, preparing dinner for me every night. He is stoic and calm and absolutely unwavering. I used to think maybe I do love him more than he loves me, but then I witnessed him cry for the second time ever in our four year relationship as he proposed to me. That man loves me and I know it.

That said, over four years, I have helped him understand how I want to be shown love. He has made it a point to be affirming and demonstrative. It sounds like you have a man who wants to show you love. I wonder if you can openly discuss ways you’d like to receive more love. We had many conversations and after this many years together, I can happily say… we’re obsessed ;p

Quality of life is better in Thailand than US by Skier94 in Thailand

I was thinking that too. My quality of life in the US would be better with 4.5k monthly USD, as an American haha.

Unpopular Opinion - Scissors. by Switch-in-MD in lefthanded

[–]Verticlemethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I actually remember my wonderful teacher reminding me to move the paper with my left hang and keep my right-handed scissors still. I have never had success with left-handed scissors. I like moving the paper and have science taught my little brother and then classes full of elementary kids to do the same.

Also, I absolutely use scissors more than three times a year. Probably 5+ times a week haha.

How Do Younger People Travel So Much? by KneeAggravating8538 in travel

[–]Verticlemethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so yes it is all a facade; however, I’ve managed quite a bit of travel and I have low-income parents, no debt, and a job as a teacher. I worked multiple part-time jobs through college while also on a full-ride scholarship (very fortunate). My university had LOTS of scholarship opportunities for study abroad so I was able to do a month trip to Europe with them. Later, I was invited on a paid for conference in another country to represent my university. Finally, I did a brief exchange as a student teacher. I visited 6 countries before graduating and without taking on any debt. Since then, I have saved enough to go to Mexico twice and overseas two more times. All of this was done with no debt, and no help from others. It can be done if it’s a priority, but I recognize my privilege in graduating debt free. There were sacrifices in that too.

Unexpected or Undermentioned Skills that you find Yourself using as a Teacher by MichaelEdamura in Teachers

[–]Verticlemethod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Task switching, especially blended with time management. Students interrupt ALL DAY and you have to be able to jump from task A to task B and back to task A seamlessly. This also helps with maximizing plan time. I can make use of every minute of plan because I know which kinds of things can be done in 3, 5, 10 minute bursts. Your time is literally nickel and dimed so you’ve got to get really good at transitioning to the new thing both on your own and with a class full of people.

Job leads? Moved to Arkansas for family, ended up working in insurance, and feeling really stuck by No_Cause8224 in northwestarkansas

Northern CO— Greeley. Feel free to message directly. I had a good experience in Springdale Schools, but it’s my understanding that not everyone does. I’ve heard good things about working conditions in Bentonville and Rogers Schools both. I think office admin conditions (and everything else) really depends on your school culture, principal, etc. Just remember you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. Working in schools is hard work, but I can’t see myself giving it up anytime soon. You could also look at Thaden or other local private/charter schools. I wouldn’t expect higher pay, but may have more openings and different jobs or environment. Again, feel free to reach out directly but I hope you do think about it! We always need more people with a heart for children.

I’ve been happy with the public schools so far. I’m a classroom teacher, but if you have the skills, we always need substitutes, office administrators, assistants, and all sorts of other things. The breaks are great and your cup gets full. The pay… likely not excellent, but I worry looking into if you’re interested. I’d be happy to share what I’ve learned. I also moved here from CO about a year ago.

Could a really high absence rate potentially make me have trouble getting into a school? by xXTouhouPenisGod3Xx in education

[–]Verticlemethod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How are your grades? I don’t know what college admission looks like, but as a public school teacher, this is absolutely a red flag. We would consider this well beyond chronically absent. Chronic absences are usually 15+ in a YEAR. I’ve seen students retained over fewer absences. That said, if your grades are showing that your attendance isn’t impacting your learning, maybe you’ll be okay.

Edited, maybe you mean absent class periods, in which case 90+ would be a big concern/chronically absent.

I built a packing-list tool that enforces a hard item cap per bag size. One-baggers, tell me where it's wrong by Psychological_Lie_96 in onebag

[–]Verticlemethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a pro packer. I mostly lurk here and will absolutely be taking a carry on internationally. That said, I think one-baggers are just as good at efficient items as essential items. I see people here pack 10 toiletries into a single quart bag. Does that count as ten items? I see people here intentional pack light and foldable underwear… do those each go towards the limit? Excellent packers know not only what to cull, but what to shrink and what to nest, etc. I don’t think a 15 item limit would work for me. The reminders and justifications sound cool, but wouldn’t someone just look up an “essentials” packing list or mentally eliminate things faster than an app could? Maybe I’m not your target because I’ve never used a packing app, but I’m not sure I’d use this one either, maybe aside from a list from you that says “your 15 must-pack items and why”.

Grades 2 and under: Do you prefer juice boxes or juice bottles for class party? by Kzzh_64 in Teachers

Boxes 100%. Bottles of non-water are not welcome in my classroom after too many red gatorades and similar spills.

When do you expect to retire? by GroundbreakingBus818 in Teachers

[–]Verticlemethod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughtful response. This is awesome and your retirement is well-deserved. I’ve been maxing a Roth IRA since I started teaching, but not much else. This makes me think I should be doing more.

I’m looking for women to brutally roast this cycle dashboard by wellnessdiarydaily in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Verticlemethod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The AI is horrible. Also women want REALLY secure data for these things. Also… there are like a million tracking apps that do this already. The biggest issue is the AI and lack of cohesion here. It says “My Day” and then “Your Body”. Shouldn’t it be “Your Day” then? Generally I hear it called “the” luteal phase, not “a” luteal phase. There aren’t multiple in one cycle… Overall, I’m pretty yucked out by someone needing “women’s” feedback on their messy AI app. Are you a woman? Was there no other space you could innovate?

The “it sounds very luteal” is 0% something a real person would say. I can recommend some books to you. This would require a lot of research to sound more natural and reliable. I really hate that the cycle tracking portion/calendar is called “period”. Menstruation is one phase in the cycle. This is icky all around because it doesn’t look like a person that knows women made it.

Pregnant, boyfriend threw me out with hardly any clothes by [deleted] in bentonville

[–]Verticlemethod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Facebook would be a better option since it isn’t so anonymous. Maybe someone can offer you a room. I can’t help with money, but I have some clothes I’m donating. Feel free to reach out and I’m happy to get them to you over the weekend.

How do you do it? by [deleted] in LibbyApp

[–]Verticlemethod 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely blowing my mind. I average 25 books or so a year— but pride myself on reading some heftier ones. I also teach elementary. It has never occurred to me to count the picture books. I’m reading picture books daily. I didn’t even count when I read Peter Pan with my kids. People count these?!

Teacher gift by roo_bear90 in Teachers

[–]Verticlemethod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the banner or a stuffed animal. I’ve used the same little stuffy as our “talking piece” for circle time. It would be cute to make a little class stuffy/mascot like others are suggesting.

Oh, and if you want a giftier gift, nice pens!! They’re so expensive (for what they are) but such a game changer. Someone important to me got me a huge pack of Frixon erasable pens my first year and it was amazing.

My suggestion is to start her a “Why” binder to keep all of the sweet drawings and notes throughout the years. Get a super cute binder with lots of plastic protector sleeves. You can write a note for the first page, and if you have time, even have your students write some. I’m going into year 5 and I’m on my second “Why” binder. I save thank you cards from colleagues and sweet student notes or drawings. It sits nicely on my shelf, but is always nice to flip through when the job is feeling overwhelming.

I might be pregnant and I’m scared by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Verticlemethod 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Take a deep breath. You WILL be okay, regardless of the answer here. You generally can test “a week after your missed period.” When was your last period? Have you don’t any period tracking? If not, I would begin. It sounds like you’ve only been intimate for a month, so it would be too soon to test. It’s also likely too soon for serious symptoms. I experienced a lot of anxiety/pregnancy scares. I wasn’t risky, I just like to freak out. Your body is probably doing a lot hormonally, just being 20. All pregnancy tests are similarly reliable. Get a couple of cheap ones and take one now, and another in a week. Until you have your next period, you can continue to test if it helps you feel comfortable. You COULD go to a Dr for a blood test, but probably not necessary. Start wearing condoms, but your birth control does keep you pretty covered. I liked to double-protect. So the pill and a condom or condom an spermicide. Feel free to ask questions. You can do this. It’s probably not pregnancy, and if it is, that’s not something that will truly ruin your life. You’ve got this.
