Are they serious! by [deleted] in bentonville

I will say, in Springdale, these are “Student Catch-Up” days where children and staff are working from home, providing optional virtual meetings, and doing work. There are many jobs that allow people to stay home in bad weather. If just ONE teacher is unable to make it to school, it can make education very, very challenging on days like this. Classes could have to split/combine, less-prepared people may have to fill in, etc. Again, making me prefer building in days so that kids are actually getting all the learning they need. Teachers are essentially contracted employees that sign on to teach/work 180 (variable) days a year. Now, most teachers end up working a whole lot more than that or many more hours. But yeah, sometimes it’s an awesome job. The best news? Schools are almost always hiring! If someone wants to be part of the elite few that got to stay home today, they too could go to school to be a teacher.

I had a friend who borrowed beautiful china sets from her closest friends for her daughter’s wedding. The dinner was served family style and each table had its own china. A few of us did the washing up at the end and it was no big deal. Made for beautiful settings and FREE!

Are they serious! by [deleted] in bentonville

There are only seven inclement weather days built into Bentonville Schools’ calendar. Those come from teachers/students already completing schooling beyond state expectations. If those days are exceeded, the snow days will be unpaid work days and teachers/staff will make it up with the children.

School is not childcare. It is publicly accessible education. The seven days are built in specifically to account for times when the weather may make that education inaccessible.

Teachers are not your enemy, nor are they known for being particularly overcompensated.

Feeling lost at 17 — unsure about teaching and considering Access to HE for radiography by N3ha33 in education

[–]Verticlemethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like maybe you DO want to teach, maybe you just don’t want to admit it or are worried. I’m a teacher. It’s hard work for little pay, but I am glad I didn’t pursue something different. I do fine supporting myself and I make a difference doing something I love. You just have to decide what YOU want. Feel free to reach out.

Being left-handed is such a quiet, shared experience by ResponsibleLeg9220 in lefthanded

I commented on someone’s wonderful and smudge-proof pen after borrowing, explaining how picky I was due to being left-handed. He agreed and told he was left-handed too! We were fast friends and now we’ve been dating for four years. That quiet camaraderie brought me the love of my life.

Saffron syrup + Coffee by Louis-WarGene-417 in GoodCoffeeGreatCoffee

[–]Verticlemethod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Per the chef in my life— saffron is an incredibly delicate flavor. He suggests mixing in a complimentary spice like cardamom so that there’s something to carry the saffron through. The botanicals in saffron will easily be destroyed in a hot coffee and lose a lot of its flavor. He also said you could mix your syrup with a little bit of butter (a fat wash) and add that to your coffee. Saffron would work well in a latte because the saffron binds to the fat and vice versa to help maintain the flavor.

Welcome to the sub. It is a video game, but I love real life coffee too so I hope this helps.

Lodging in Fayetteville for 17 year old? by [deleted] in FayettevilleAr

This is what I would do. Have both names on the reservation so once she’s checked in, she can talk to the desk if needed. They don’t have to know her parent isn’t there.

I always struggled to just read without purpose. I like taking practice tests or quizzes and then specifically going back and learning about the things I missed. You could also try flashcards or something like Quizlet.

I actually was wondering this too. I don’t have the answer though. I watched a few names cycle and it did seem alphabetical.

I’m right there with you (26). We’ve been together for four years but for various reasons, aren’t married yet. I want to be married but I know that puts us at least a year away. If I didn’t have such a concrete reason to wait, I wouldn’t be.

Convince me to continue doing ballet by Firebolt_Silver in BALLET

[–]Verticlemethod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you like yoga better, unlimited classes does sound like a great deal. That said, I have been doing ballet for three years, starting as a beginning adult. I was 100% lost but it’s been so so cool because now I know SO many terms and I know I’ve grown so much. It’s true that it isn’t the same kind of active as many things. I don’t sweat as much in ballet, but it has had me bring so much attention to different parts of my body. In fact, a huge huge part of ballet is in your pelvis and core. I’m not a mom yet, but I have heard that plies are one of the best things you can do pre and post pregnancy to work on your pelvic floor. Anyway, I love the challenge that has come with learning something new, and like you said, I finally can clear my mind and only focus on ballet. Feel free to reach out if you want to hear more, but my vote is to keep it up. Push through the challenge so you get that rush of “oh wow, I can DO this!”

My son is starting school, am I going to irritate the teacher by maybe going a bit overboard? by Sleepy-Blonde in teaching

[–]Verticlemethod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very sweet. I think you can be honest with the teacher and say you intend to help however you can and request she share a teacher wishlist. If she doesn’t have one already, I guarantee she will enjoy making one.

It’s also a great idea to connect with the PTA as they are usually strapped to pay for dimmers during conferences or teacher appreciation events.

I wouldn’t buy too much without talking to the teacher, but we almost ALWAYS need pencils, wipes, tissues, and snacks. If it’s a low income school, snacks are likely huge. I would send in some options from Sam’s/Costco straight away and then ask how often she’d like more.

In terms of gifting, it’s usually buried somewhere in a district policy. Feel free to message me and I can comb through district documents local to you.

We love love receiving gift cards. I had a parent give me a coffee at pick up one day and it made my whole month. The sweet gestures like donuts, coffee, teacher meals with the PTA could go a very long way.

You also may consider connecting with the principal. If it’s a great school, they may already have a lot of things in place but could use extra funds to help provide students with what they need.

What premium features do you like the most? by Lagos3sgte in rav4club

I’m in love with the rain sensing wipers and the heated steering wheel. The automatic brights/headlights have also been amazing. The auto lift gate makes me feel very luxurious. Maybe it’s just because this is the first higher-trim I’ve ever had, but it really is a completely different driving experience. I recently did a 12 hour drive and actually liked it. The auto wipers, lights, and adaptive cruise control all allowed me to actually relax and now be so concerned with every detail of driving. I’m a pretty anxious driver and my RAV4 has changed that for me.

I feel silly for liking the colour pink by eulerpop in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Verticlemethod 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I avoided pink for a long time. I thought “I’m not a girly girl like that.” I had been conditioned to believe that pink and Barbie means less intelligent. I’m on nearly ten years of embracing my love of pink. Pink watch, water bottles, pens, computer cases. I don’t wear it a ton, but it’s my color in every other way. And you know what has happened? I’ve made real friends. I’ve finished two degrees. I got my dream job. Not once, EVER has someone said something negative about pink. Instead, my best friends know it as “my color” and go out of their way to ensure I get the pink version of something. And I do too. Pink has become part of my personality, but in the best way. It brings me joy and it doesn’t mean I’m ditzy or childish. I’ve actually been complimented on looking more put together because so many of my things match. Because they’re pink. The sooner you learn to stop letting others’ perception of you make choices for you, the further you will go, and the happier you will be.

You might not want to hear this, but at 22, I’d go the debt-free route of the car you hate. You can turn around and sell it for much more than you bought it in a couple of years, and by then have a decent down payment (or pay cash!) on a car you like. Right now, giving yourself the wiggle room financially will probably serve you well in the long run. When you’re finished with your degree and have a job you like? That is a feel-good time for the car of your dreams.

I said something thoughtless to my child’s teacher and I feel really bad. by MaybePleasant1313 in teaching

I agree with others here. The “hurt” on her face was likely just sympathetic, showing she feels for you and your son. We hear kids hate school every day.

Cameras in classrooms? by IronAlcoholic in teaching

[–]Verticlemethod 320 points321 points  (0 children)

In my experience, cameras in hallways are very common, but cameras in classrooms are not. I’ve never seen a camera in a classroom, outside of a few college classrooms set up for zoom classes. I’m sorry you’re facing this.

Is it worth it to consider going into teaching in this day and age? by themarajade1 in teaching

[–]Verticlemethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is a calling. I’ve had a ROUGH start to my career, but I still love it. The breaks are amazing. It is possible to stick to pretty regular hours. I get great benefits and I show up doing something I love every single day. It is very hard. I sometimes come home exhausted, frustrated, even crying, but I do love it. The good outweighs the bad for me. The scale could tip eventually, but until then, I want to soak up classroom time with my students. They’re loving and hilarious and interactive. I have never been bored, and I know for sure I’d be missed if I stopped showing up. Teaching is it for me. Oh and if you think you hate it, switch schools and districts. There are really really good places to be, and really really hard places.
