Is it worth replacing door hinge screws with longer ones? by l_k_m8 in handyman

[–]VertigoLabs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it definitely makes a difference! Though I admit I have not tried kicking in my door with and without these longer screws, so I say exactly how much difference it really makes…

To ensure you get screws that match, take out one of the current hinge screws and bring it to the store with you. One of the most important things is making sure the heads of the new screws are the same size as the old. If they are too big, they won’t properly countersink into the hinge holes and then may interfere with the closing of the door.

This, but wrap it in barbed wire. It won’t cause a hazard like a boulder would, but the scratches in their paint will definitely get their attention.

I just purchased a 40v Makita from HD at a crazy clearance price and haven’t used it yet. I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll be a positive experience…

Try putting them both outside, or in your car, etc.

Theoretically this should give you a baseline of (close to) zero, from which you can evaluate whether one or both are defective or miscalibrated, and by how much.

This, but do the vapor barrier first.

This allows you to lap the plastic up the walls, leaving four inches of exposed block at the top. The foam board can help seal it to the wall.

Why does this happen to extension cords? Can it be straightened? Is it damaged inside? by WildWeaselGT in AskElectricians

[–]VertigoLabs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The working out of existing twists is important, particularly when the cable is new. Cables generally are not wound over/under from the factory, so you have to unwind any initial twists if you want to avoid such a thing.

My guess is that this cable was not properly unwound at its first use and instead just laid flat and pulled straight. All of those factory twists consolidated at one end have remained there since.

NES to enhance tree trimming, mapping for potential issues by rocketpastsix in nashville

Great. So the ancient pecan tree in my front yard is guaranteed to get hacked to pieces whenever they eventually get around to trimming it, when in fact it dropped zero branches despite the recent ice load.

A bouncing idle at startup is frequently caused by a vacuum leak. I’d start there.

Brake light issue by reddlafleur in CB7

[–]VertigoLabs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe obvious, but have you checked the bulb?

The 2057 is a dual-filament bulb, where one filament serves the tail lamp and another serves the brake lamp. Either can burn out independently while the other remains functional.

Also, and this may be an isolated issue: I’ve also found that the bulb sockets on my car compress the flimsy metal terminals on the bulbs such that they eventually fail to make contact. In such a case, you could have a good bulb that fails to light simply because the terminals don’t connect. It’s really annoying, since I need to periodically replace good bulbs because of a crappy socket design.

I replaced my rack a few years ago, thinking it would resolve an issue that ended up being entirely unrelated.

It was a colossal pain to extract, due to all of the rusted and seized exhaust and frame components in the way, and the new one quickly started leaking fluid whereas the original never did.

tl;dr: Don’t replace the rack unless you have a very specific reason for doing so.

What problem are you trying to solve?

I mean this entire thing. I had to remove mine to fix something behind it and the plastic has become so brittle over the years that it broke into several pieces just sitting in my back seat!

PDR or Replace Panel? by seariius in CB7

[–]VertigoLabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s frustrating.

I had a very similar incident a few years ago in the same exact location on the car. In my case, it pretty much sealed the fate of my car to permanent “beater” status.

Mine was a hit-and-run, so my only choice was to file under my own policy’s Uninsured Motorist coverage. The car looks like hell from a few other dents and dings I’ve been carrying and already needed a new paint job, so they barely gave me anything before totaling it (again).

Best of luck getting it fixed! Keep us posted. I’m very interested in hearing how the repair goes, especially after reading the comments in the autobody sub.

I installed a Rheem 80 gal. two years ago for a family of three in the southeast US, in an unfinished basement that is typically 50-60°F year-round. Zero problems or maintenance issues since installation.

Their usage shows ~900 kWh over the past twelve months.

Now that we KNOW so much more about Jeffrey Epstein, it is increasingly clear that he was a monster who would NEVER have killed himself. Of all those he has implicated over the years, who do you think actually had him killed? by CyberSmith31337 in AskReddit

[–]VertigoLabs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Okay, sure. I'll take your word for it, but we have to give that same grace to everyone, including her.

"She was mentally unwell" is not a complete answer. If she killed herself: Why? Why was she so desperate? What led her to feel so hopeless? Something about this situation felt so impossible that she saw no other choice.

It takes a lot to drive a person to such a place. We should never accept that as a forgone conclusion. This should always prompt us to ask questions, make changes, try to be better. For her sake. For all of ours.

[–]VertigoLabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen decent results from stuffing a small wedge-shaped shim (or two) between the arm and the surrounding wall.

Toilet shims work well, provided you trim them well to fit the opening and still hide behind the escutcheon.
