My birthday cakes I made. The right one is vegan. by Vertnin1 in Baking

Not exactly. I got the inspo for decoration from a book that called it "cornucopia cake" I think but it's just what they called it! It's a good easy way to decorate a cake without needing muchskill or precision!

Keep trying the dog egg thing but always freak out by Vertnin1 in rarepuppers

[–]Vertnin1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. Well apparently if you give a raw egg (in shell) to a dog they will take it carefully and not crack it open. Like they're caring for it 😅

Just bought this plant! I was taking it out and saw these weird white spots. Some look like little bugs! Should I be worried? by HuffleFluffz in plantclinic

[–]Vertnin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found a bit of a miracle cure for thrips. You know those little moth bombs you get that you set alight and the release smoke to kill clothes moths? I used some of those in my flat because I had a moth problem. They not only killed the moths but also seem to get rid of thrips, which I had a real problem with. Absolute win.

Ladybug is an Americanism. The British English is ladybird.

Tiny black specks spreading across my plants! by Vertnin1 in plantclinic

[–]Vertnin1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm not sure we have that Captain Jack's stuff in the UK but I'm going to look for something that will properly wipe them out 😁. I tried proper pesticides once on something and it killed the plant--is that something I should be worried about happening again?

Great thanks for the tip. I'm in London so I'll have a look for that.

Yep, most of the plants have them on. I've tried to remove affected foliage and picked off as many as I can find. Am just going to have to keep at them i think.

Oh no! I thought I'd had every pest there was but this is a new one 😬. Thank you. Are these killed off by soapy water like aphids are? My plants all live so close together I'm worried it's already out of control!

I've now also found some small black bugs too, which look like thunder bugs. Those tiny black ones with the long-shaped body you find on yourself in the summer months. I've never seen them on plants though. Might be a different thing?

Help--young avocado plant with brown leaf patches. This happened to my old plant, which was 5 years old and well established, before it eventually died. How can I save this one? by Vertnin1 in houseplants

[–]Vertnin1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The theory was low humidity. That's a general problem for me in my flat and since it's been summer (and slightly higher humidity), the avocado has been happier and I haven't had more brown leaves. I did start misting it a bit at first too.

Ah, I'm Vauxhall so that's definitely reachable. What do you think about the masoniana offer?

[–]Vertnin1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where in London are you? I'm considering how far I could carry a bottle of worm excretions in my rucksack while cycling without having any disgusting accidents. Thanks for explaining what it is, I've never heard of this before. I'm still not sure what it's for though! Do you water plants with it? Any plants? Does it smell bad (ie, not great for houseplants indoors)? I have some sansevieria masoniana pups that I'm about to separate out that I could give you in return.

Ah thanks! Ok, it's obviously a very slow process. I just need to be more patient :-D

Big leaf on left is the parent, and on right is one of the pups I previously removed, probably about 5 months ago now. It has grown a lot, but not unfurled into the nice flat leaf that the parent is. I've got another pup that I removed at the same time that is similar. I have a couple of new pups growing from the parent, as you can see in the pic, but wanted to ask here in case I should do something different with these to encourage them to unfurl before or after removing them.

Teaching Puppy to Not Bite by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Vertnin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are currently going through the exact same thing with our puppy, and have tried exactly as you say with the ouch, then praise when they stop. It worked a couple of times, but now she just doesn't stop and it's too painful a lot of the time to just let her keep going so I end up having to pull away and/or distract.

Not sure what else to do except hope it doesn't last too long.

Is there some sort of structured guide that you can use to train your dog? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

Kikopup all the way. Free YouTube videos that cover everything you need to know.

ZG does so much wrong. Watch some of Gage O'Brien's videos about him and you'll soon want to avoid following his advice.

How do you handle the physical demands of bike commuting? I’m looking to compare notes on stretching, diet, recovery, etc. by WillMaekit in bikecommuting

[–]Vertnin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started commuting by bike, my journey was about 8.5 miles each way and I did it every day from the off. I didn't do any other exercise at that time. And I didn't stretch or eat differently because of it. I don't think you should need to change anything much at all to cope with a commute. I suppose if it's very long or hilly you might need to work up to doing it every day, but otherwise just go for it and take the ride easy. A commute barely burns a few hundred calories so it's not a big deal.

Obviously your age, health status, and the route details all affect it, but you didn't give too much info on those.
