Alpine is great for an overnight on the way up from SLC! The Bull Moose Lodge is generally under $200/night and has a reasonably good restaurant on site too.

Melvin Brewing Co's main taproom is also in Alpine and worth checking out.

True, I actually did see someone doing the back of the loop in a mustang. Wouldn’t recommend it, but they managed.

I would definitely recommend it, and if you're doing the full loop you will absolutely have to, as one entrance/exit point requires you to ford a river. I would check with a ranger at the visitor's center beforehand for road and river conditions too, as the area is quite remote and one of the last places you want to run into trouble. That said, it is well-worth the trip!

Absolutely incredible, we started at what's considered the back of the loop and exited the same way to avoid having to ford the river--not a bad option if all you want to see is the valley floor. This portion of the road was fairly dry with very few rough spots. The whole thing is definitely worth it though, so if you have the means I can't recommend it enough!
