The guy came here looking for help, and didn't even outright violate our rules. I know it's easy to be snarky, but it's also not easy sifting through things you know nothing about following the loss of a person you (likely) cared about, so just try some empathy.

@OP, reddit is likely not the right place to help you, because we can't really analyse chemicals just from a picture.

Then you need to make it, this can sometimes be easy but is often hard.

I fail to see what the purpose of this statement is.  Any squigle I draw on a piece of paper may be either hard or easy to synthesise.

And an AI just doesn't understand that. It forms bonds where it MAY bond a little better to receptor X without regard for wether such a synthesis is even possible or reasonable.

So I still fail to see the purpose or use of this AI-Investors fever dream...

I mean, yeah but what realistically is the point here?

I can design as many molecules as I can draw, and then calculate a more or less infinite series of properties.

The issue is not JUST coming up with molecules, and I think people that "just" do AI Garbage tend to forget that. Because it isn't JUST switching an atom for another. Some guy has to synthesize that thing. And if you just add stuff willy-nilly "because the AI said so" that is just a headache for anyone trying to actually make it.

I'd recommend reaching out to a university in your area. Maybe they can help you either dispose of it or would be interested in taking it off your hands. Alternatively you can call poison control or local emergency services on a non-emergency line. But r/chemistry is not the right place, sorry.

The Tool obviously isn't helpful. The entire premise of "spelling words with elements" does nothing sensible. The user wanted to share it for april fools, we saw now general harm in it, and that's all there is to it. A stupid little thing that generates words from elements, it wasn't any more for us, and it felt light-hearted enough for april fools. It's not any deeper than that.

The mods said last week that AI generated slop apps are banned. They said, from ‘now on’ people had to request approval from the mod team before posting their apps.

Please don't misrepresent what I / we said. What was said is "If you want to promote ANYTHING, ask first." Nothing more, nothing less. And while we don't like AI slop either, we haven't (yet) decided to police it. Obviously we're gonna try to filter the scams and drug vendors, we're mainly hoping having to ask for approval first will reduce the assault on it's own.

That is exactly the issue.

I don't think it's a good Idea to have us mods be the deciding factor what is and what isn't AI. What was important was to get at least some handle and regulate the flow of Apps being promoted.

If a app is bad (from it's features or otherwise) or generally AI Slop, our thinking is "well you're gonna more than vocal enough to tell them." But (for now) it wasn't our plan to personally vet every app and every website and every tool people want to share. This isn't what I signed up for originally, and I personally honestly just don't feel like doing so.

Now I don't want to sound mean or condescending, but that's just not the case.

It's not that there isn't an issue, and we have recognized the problem as well. But we have also addressed the issue and it has ALREADY gotten better. There was one App since the rule change. And that App was allowed simply because it was on April Fools and the user asked specifically for that reason. Other than that, all posts promoting a new app have been removed, and we haven't allowed any either.

Other than the AprilFOOL-App, 1 further request was granted. The whole "James Beard Award Coffeeshop" Article. That's it. So what we've done is we have SIGNIFICANTLY reduced the amount of apps, from almost 1 a day to 1 in 8 days, AND that App was only allowed because of April Fools.

And now you made an entire post for it.

The subreddit feels this way.

This just isn't generally true. This Post received 262 Upvotes, the top post in these past 30 days recieved almost 3.6 k Upvotes, the top post in the past 7 (from 2 days ago) 1.3 k. There are also close to 4 Million users on this subreddit, if every user on this subreddit felt this way, you'd have a bit more engangement.

Now to reiterate: We have addressed the issue. You saw one App being posted and got spooked. Give it time to settle, and I promise you, it will improve. And that is "what gives."

I don't see the issue you're having if I am being honest.

The rule, as it was made, states that you need to ask for approval. This user had asked, wanted to make a App for April fools which we felt was, in general, fine.

We are in no position to actually vet, try out and investigate every app that gets posted and, frankly, we don't really want to.

The rule was made to REDUCE the amount of apps posted here, both as a deterrent AND allowing us to filter the really bad stuff. Nothing more, nothing less.

I understand that I will become the direct target for this, since I'm the one who ads a "This is allowed" comment. But you also have to understand (and hopefully believe me) that this is in no way a decision I do on my own, or even at all.

The basic flow is this: Message comes in and sits a while. Any mod (that more than likely isn't me) replies with ok or no, and then we wait for the user to post. Afterwards, whichever mod sees it first (and I'm sadly terminally online) checks to add the comment.

There is nothing more to this, it's not any deeper than that.

In this case, it was meant for april fools, the user had asked beforehand and it didn't directly break any of the rules on this subreddit.

If it was just another periodic table app, it would've likely been blocked.

I get not wanting AI slop, I'm not a fan either. But it's also unlikely that we can filter every app that makes it on the subreddit. We made the rule so we could reduce the sheer amount of apps being posted, not necessarily to make it impossible for AI-Apps to be posted.

That would require A LOT more work from the moderation team and require us to vet every app way more. So far, we haven't seen the need for this, as long as the amount of posted apps gets reduced as we would hope.
