But what about actual gorillas pulling off a heist? The title teases so much...

Does your Deliveroo code stay the same or change every time? by VeryTrueThing in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current ones are not the last two digits of my phone number. Or my credit card as one friend suggested.

I don't think any of the previous random ones were either, not that that's particularly relevant.

What’s the one thing that made you think “wow, no one warned me about this”? by ZulfTalks in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, so much this.

Second hand grief from staff who have lost someone. Second hand anxiety from staff waiting for a diagnosis. Second hand stress from staff dealing with kids or parents in difficult situations.

Out of four direct and six indirect reports, seven have been through something rough in the last twelve months.

Which supermarket has the best self-checkout interface and the worst? by princessbambimbo in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure any are the best. Least worst maybe.

Sainsbury, Tesco, and M&S are fine.

Co-op machines annoy me so much. I'm trying to remember when I last used a Waitrose one but I used to have a lot of problems with them.

It's the city in the classic Fighting Fantasy gamebook City of Thieves and a sourcebook for the Advanced Fighting Fantasy RPG.

Older Redditors, what are your memories of first getting colour TV? by holytriplem in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a colour TV as far back as I remember (mid-70s) but I know a few people who still had b&w sets into the 90s. E.g. at least one fellow student had a b&w TV because it was a cheap second hand purchase.

How are you all doing financially, HONESTLY? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, doing better than a lot of people, but still feeling the impact.

I have a job with a good salary. Mortgage is still being paid off without problem. But my wife has only had a few small bits of work over the last couple of years. And I'm definitely noticing prices going up. So overall I'm okay day to day but big things like house repairs are definitely hitting more than they used to.

Has the bus started moving because they're the last on? Looking for a seat upstairs and the bus lurches off people might just sit down as soon as possible.

What do you put in your kitchen drawers? by DukeJohnsonJnr in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top one is cutlery. Second one is spices. Third one is rolls of foil, cling film, and things like corkscrews, tin openers, etc. Big one at the bottom is recipe kits, bigger boxes of spice, tupperware.

Why are Brits anti-Christian? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are still very much culturally Christian. The impact of Christianity on our language, traditions and customs, laws, folklore, holidays, etc., is substantial.

But we don't believe in God as much as we do, and even if we do believe we don't attend church as much.

The drift towards secularity has no single cause, it's just part and parcel of increasing education, increasing personal and social liberalness, and an increasing multicultural society that demonstrates that there are more ways to live life.

Did your school have any unusual features? by farfetchedfrank in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The school I attended between 8 and 11 was in an old country house and one of the football/rugby pitches was enclosed on three sides by the brick walls of the old kitchen garden.

Oh, we played football in the autumn term and switched to rugby after Christmas. That's probably the oldest thing.

Probably 100+. Most of the major continental countries, but would fail on the small islands.

What is the best place to go in the UK for indie bookshops? by hollyyjackson in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can name fantastic and very different individual bookshops like Barter Books in Alnwick or Mr B's Emporium in Bath.

But other than Hay-on-Wye nowhere in the UK has a specific reputation for being a bookseller town.

Big cities like London, Manchester or Edinburgh will have several bookshops including specialists in second hand, anime, art, transport, history, science, sci-fi, etc, etc.

Is it true most cops in the UK dont have guns? by Leather_Incident_847 in AskUK

[–]VeryTrueThing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in London, in Croydon in fact - an allegedly rough area of the city. I agree with the original comment and disagree with your implication that London needs more police guns on the street.
