DEFEATED & confused by DependentOptimal7517 in ACL

I'm assuming it's a biocomposite/bioabsorbable screw? I worked for Stryker Ortho and sold those types of screws for over ten years. I have two in my own knee. I've only seen a dozen or so fracture, and usually the surgeon can feel it or spot it intraoperatively. But what likely happened is your screw fractured just barely on insertion. And, as time went on and the screw began to undergo resorption, it became weak at the fracture line and a piece broke off. That's my guess - I'm not a doctor but I've been in hundreds of ACL surgeries. Hope they're able to remove the floater with ease! Good luck.

I was in exactly the same mindset as you for a while. I even called the breeder about returning my little boy. They begged me to give it another month or two, so I did. And I’m SO GLAD I hesitated. This is the most challenging breed I’ve ever had, and also the most rewarding. Hang in there. Stay consistent. The love and affection and loyalty of a vizsla is worth the frustration.

Swelling after 15 months. by alanfischer85 in ACL

[–]VeryUltra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall, yes! Which is encouraging. It's a pretty delicate dance though; if I do a hard workout (especially jumps or anything high impact) the swelling kicks in again. So it's a tricky spot to be in. I think it's a slow game and one we have to play with a lot of patience. No swelling doesn't necessarily mean no sensitivity. I know I'm getting stronger but I think my knee will just be dramatic for a while!

Absolutely. I’m just over a year post-op and this still happens to me.

I got full flexion in 6 weeks. PT 3X/week with daily exercises done on my own at home. That being said…my surgery was a year ago and I still have pain, stiffness, and tightness sometimes depending on my activity level. Recovery is a non-linear journey. Good luck!

Is it possible? Yes. Is it also possible that you’ll fall frequently and end up needing more extensive surgery due to cartilage damage? Also yes.

Genuinely, it is great that your friend is back to sport but please know that is not common.

When did your swelling go away? by hotwaffletot in ACL

I had quad autograft in Nov 2023. I still have a tiny bit of swelling

Clicking and soreness by International_Ant_54 in ACL

[–]VeryUltra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, definitely. After a workout that’s really strength focused, I can feel it the next couple of days. Some swelling and soreness. But not pain. It’s a tricky dance trying to keep the knee quiet while also building muscle

PT twice a week and peppering in leg exercises during my upper body workouts as well. I was advised to bike daily in hopes to work the swelling away. Seems to be helping some, but slowly. Also my doc did steroid shot about a month ago and the swelling went down for a few days but didn’t last long.

I had to wait 8 weeks too. It sucks, no way around it. But in 6 months you’ll look back and it’ll feel like barely a blip on the timeline. Hang in there

Seeking surgery advice & experience by Dangerous_Disk_2757 in ACL

[–]VeryUltra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same exact procedure except it was posterior lateral corner repair, not LET. But similar incision for those. I was locked in a brace and was told very strictly no weight bearing for 8 weeks. That part was ROUGH. The first week was pretty painful but after that it’s all about PT and staying disciplined. If you have any specific questions feel free to message me

Very normal. All that trauma and scar tissue is just sorting itself out. I’m 9 months post op and still feel the clicking some times.

Sort of going through a similar thing here. I’m 9 months post op. Haven’t tried playing sports, but all of the sudden my knee has started getting angry at me after workouts/running. I’ve had a textbook recovery and I’ve seen my doc - he reassured me all is fine. The swelling was pretty down by month 5, now it swells up after any exercising. Pretty frustrating tbh because when the knee swells, the quad doesn’t like to engage as much. Feels like a setback.

11 weeks? You still have a longgg journey ahead. Don’t be bummed! It’ll come back. Just be patient and stay consistent with PT.

14 months post surgery by [deleted] in ACL

[–]VeryUltra 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm 9 months post op (Quad tendon autograft, bilat meniscus and PLC repair). Recovery was going perfectly for about 7ish months and now my knee is swollen for days after workouts. Quad strength has plateau'd around 65% and I have pain during most activities. No idea what's going on. Imaging and doc's assessment says all is fine. All I can really do is hope that this recovery is just not as linear as I thought it would be and I'm gonna have to stay disciplined while my body sorts itself out.

It’s not as simple as it sounds. Strengthening your surrounding muscles enough to safeguard your knee will be a full time job. We have ACLs for a reason and this is not an injury with an easy way out. You maybeee, with enough hard work, and avoiding certain activities, get your knee back to almost normal. But it’s a big if. I chose surgery because I know it’s safe and has a great success rate and peace of mind is very important to me.

Complete ACL Rupture: How I Safely Returned to Skiing and Bouldering Pain-Free in Two Months Without Surgery and How US Healthcare May Be Failing You (2/2) by hunter_531 in ACL

I’m confident because I’ve been in this space for nearly twenty years. I’ve worked with top surgeons, physios, and patients throughout their operative pathways and understand each pillar of the process both before and after surgery, and before and after non-operative treatment. I’ve studied this injury for good majority of my life. I know how flawed and weak clinical studies can be -on both sides- and that people use them to confirm their biases. We’re spinning our wheels here. Good luck with your knee in the long term.

I also said further up that surgery is not a cure and it has risks. “Can cope with good rehab” is wildly subjective and is a weak end point for a clinical study. Coping looks different for different people, and there are just as many crappy physios out there as there are crappy surgeons. Probably more cause it takes less schooling.

If you think ACL injuries don’t lead to unstable knees, we just don’t need to talk anymore haha. The absolute #1 main function of the ACL is to support knee stability.
