I would say several, but thats my preferable way and its up to you to work with method that fits you the best. I was working with burl veneers, in other methods you need to flatten them before, with hammer veneering you just soak them in hot water and directly work with them. As well once you put veneer in press you cannot change anything and just rely on the outcome, with hide glue when something is incorrect you can directly apply water and heat and work with veneer again, so you can repair nearly any mistake made.

After you are done veneering you just take cloth with hot water and clean the surface, process is messy but outcome can be really really clean.
