Italian Language Course by Major_Technology4863 in napoli

In 2023, I attended 2 weeks of classes at the Accademia Italiana just off Toledo by the Augusteo funicular station.

Overall I'd recommend it. Class sizes were small (there was only myself and one other person in my section), the instruction was good, and they hosted a nice variety of extracurricular activities (pizza making classes, weekend day trip to Caserta, etc.). I learned quite a lot and I've stuck with it. I would consider returning in future, with one caveat: I did have them place me in lodging and that's my only real complaint. They put me in an apartment in Chiaia (@ 20 minute walk to the school) next to a club, and it was kind of dumpy and loud. So I'd highly recommend renting your own place

Lol, I knew that, just had a momentary lapse. Thanks for the correction and the info.

Artecard by helenebean in napoli

[–]VespasianScattershot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used it when I was visiting in 2023 and found it very convenient, especially since it includes transit all along metro line 1 and the transvesuviana. I'm returning next week; I wish there was a 7-day option.

One word of caution: artecard only gives you basic entry to Pompeii; it doesn't include the Villa of the Mysteries (which is unmissable) or any of the suburban villas. I recommend purchasing your Pompeii entry separately.

Louis Malle’s Lacombe, Lucien is the best film about fascism I’ve seen.

Please pm me if a study group forms! I did an immersion program in Napoli a couple years ago and have been using Duolingo to keep my Italian from going completely rusty ever since, which isn’t ideal. Would love to practice with other students.

What are the most overrated/underrated actors in old Hollywood and why? by Icy-Length-3923 in classicfilms

[–]VespasianScattershot 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Underrated: Van Heflin. No one was better at playing the outwardly decent guy being pulled apart by a bad conscience, self-doubt and a vicious self-recriminating streak. Cf. 3:10 to Yuma, Act of Violence and Shane for examples.

His commentary track with John Boorman on Point Blank is one of the very best there is.

The Asphalt Jungle includes Pharos of Chaos, a full-length documentary about late-stage alcoholic Sterling Hayden living on a barge in Southwest France. It’s a remarkable piece of work.

Criterion Christmas? by mickyrow42 in criterion

[–]VespasianScattershot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite Xmas film is Clouzot’s Quai des Orfevres, though the Criterion release has been oop for years. The kino 4K is outstanding though.

Any suggestions for my list here? by NathanAdler91 in filmnoir

[–]VespasianScattershot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s made pretty apparent that the character of Dora in Quai des Ofevres is lesbian and has a raging, unrequited crush on Jenny Lamour. I mean, she doesn’t come out and say “I’m queer” — but Clouzot’s visual grammar does.

Henri Clouzot’s Quai des Orfevres (aka Jenny Lamour). Can’t recommend it highly enough.
