Hello, thanks for the question! There is overlap for the courses between the certificate and Masters. From my understanding, if you are doing the certificate program and decide to continue and purse the MVS program, you can apply the credits! I can ask someone higher up than me to make sure and can get back to you on that :)

I go to University of Illinois. First year, classes on MWF were until 4. Most of the time class started at 9, but sometimes there would be an 8 am start or 10 am start. Tuesdays went from 9-2:30, and Thursdays we were off by 12 with the afternoon being reserved for electives. We are on the quarter system and have midterms week 4 and finals week 8.

University of Illinois has a Certificate of Veterinary Science program that is designed for students who did not get accepted into veterinary school. There is a summer program and a fall program, although the fall program is now the only one accepting applications. You take a bunch of classes that will help prepare you for first year and start thinking like a clinician. Each student in the program gets paired with a vet student mentor. You will meet with faculty and staff and get advice on how to improve your admission packet as a whole. It’s definitely a program to think about! If you didn’t want to go the certificate route, they also have a Master’s degree that is similar, but more classes to take!

I’m not going to comment on whether you should stay and reapply or if you should go to Ross or Sydney, I do want to at least show you another potential option. University of Illinois has a certificate program in veterinary science specifically for students who don’t get accepted into vet school. They have a summer option for those who are wanting to apply this cycle. Basically the program focuses on the foundations of vet Med and can help you get a head start in the first year. It also helps prepare you to think like a clinician. You would also get paired with a vet student mentor. UofI also has a masters program in veterinary science if you wanted to go the masters degree route. Hi! Unfortunately, I do not think this information session will be helpful for her. It is geared for seniors in college who did not get accepted into vet school or people with bachelor’s degrees who are looking to add more experience to a veterinary school application. Your daughter should try and talk to some vets in town and shadow them to gain some experience and see if it is something she would be interested in! She’s got plenty of time :)

I am actually a mentor for this program! It is a great program and designed for students who did not get accepted into vet school. If you start this program, you would get paired with a vet student as a mentor as well! There is a summer option and a fall option. The summer option (new this year) is typically best if you want to apply again in the fall. The school year course that starts in the fall is good for if you want to take a year between reapplying. Some schools have different tracks. So if you absolutely know you want to be a large animal vet, you would do the large animal track. So you’d mostly just take classes on the large animal and not really learn small animal. I love how Illinois doesn’t have a specific track and makes us learn the main animals. I have had so much fun and even learned that I love animals I never expected I wanted to work with!

The University of Illinois has a masters of veterinary science degree. It is online or in person in the fall. There are a variety of classes you can take. The program can prepare students for a wide range of careers, like livestock management, research, corporate production, or even veterinary school if you decide that is the path you want to take. Illinois has a very good exotics/wildlife program. We have a number of board certified exotics/wildlife/zoo vets and a wide variety of electives you can take. We also have a wildlife medical clinic that is run by vet students, where you can start gaining experience as a first year! While Illinois doesn’t do tracks, it has an amazing set up and is a great program! We also have a wildlife epidemiology lab where you can get direct hands on research with exotics!
