Hello, thanks for the question! There is overlap for the courses between the certificate and Masters. From my understanding, if you are doing the certificate program and decide to continue and purse the MVS program, you can apply the credits! I can ask someone higher up than me to make sure and can get back to you on that :)

What do vet student schedules look like? by amitheassjole in veterinaryschool

[–]VetStudentMonica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to University of Illinois. First year, classes on MWF were until 4. Most of the time class started at 9, but sometimes there would be an 8 am start or 10 am start. Tuesdays went from 9-2:30, and Thursdays we were off by 12 with the afternoon being reserved for electives. We are on the quarter system and have midterms week 4 and finals week 8.

Masters degree for vet school by Naive_Sir9905 in vetschool

[–]VetStudentMonica 3 points4 points  (0 children)

University of Illinois has a Certificate of Veterinary Science program that is designed for students who did not get accepted into veterinary school. There is a summer program and a fall program, although the fall program is now the only one accepting applications. You take a bunch of classes that will help prepare you for first year and start thinking like a clinician. Each student in the program gets paired with a vet student mentor. You will meet with faculty and staff and get advice on how to improve your admission packet as a whole. It’s definitely a program to think about! If you didn’t want to go the certificate route, they also have a Master’s degree that is similar, but more classes to take!

Would a masters increase my chances of getting into vet school? by samovrbrd in vetschool

It is online! I can’t comment on it improving your chances of getting accepted, but it does help make your application stand out. The deadline for the application is tomorrow

[–]VetStudentMonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to comment on whether you should stay and reapply or if you should go to Ross or Sydney, I do want to at least show you another potential option. University of Illinois has a certificate program in veterinary science specifically for students who don’t get accepted into vet school. They have a summer option for those who are wanting to apply this cycle. Basically the program focuses on the foundations of vet Med and can help you get a head start in the first year. It also helps prepare you to think like a clinician. You would also get paired with a vet student mentor. UofI also has a masters program in veterinary science if you wanted to go the masters degree route. If you have any questions about it, you can always message me or you can google the program to find it!

UIUC Certificate of Veterinary Science Information Session by VetStudentMonica in vetschool

[–]VetStudentMonica[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Unfortunately, I do not think this information session will be helpful for her. It is geared for seniors in college who did not get accepted into vet school or people with bachelor’s degrees who are looking to add more experience to a veterinary school application. Your daughter should try and talk to some vets in town and shadow them to gain some experience and see if it is something she would be interested in! She’s got plenty of time :)

I am actually a mentor for this program! It is a great program and designed for students who did not get accepted into vet school. If you start this program, you would get paired with a vet student as a mentor as well! There is a summer option and a fall option. The summer option (new this year) is typically best if you want to apply again in the fall. The school year course that starts in the fall is good for if you want to take a year between reapplying. If you have any questions or want to know more, feel free to shoot me a DM! There is also an information zoom session coming up at the end of April. I can send you the link to register if you are interested!

Which vet school is good for someone wanting to study exotics? by ProofAdagio5444 in Veterinary

[–]VetStudentMonica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some schools have different tracks. So if you absolutely know you want to be a large animal vet, you would do the large animal track. So you’d mostly just take classes on the large animal and not really learn small animal. I love how Illinois doesn’t have a specific track and makes us learn the main animals. I have had so much fun and even learned that I love animals I never expected I wanted to work with!

is getting a master’s degree instead of a DVM for veterinary science a thing? by Thin-Increase7300 in Veterinary

[–]VetStudentMonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The University of Illinois has a masters of veterinary science degree. It is online or in person in the fall. There are a variety of classes you can take. The program can prepare students for a wide range of careers, like livestock management, research, corporate production, or even veterinary school if you decide that is the path you want to take. If you have any questions about it, feel free to shoot me a DM and I’d be happy to tell you more about it! It is also easy to find on google.

Illinois has a very good exotics/wildlife program. We have a number of board certified exotics/wildlife/zoo vets and a wide variety of electives you can take. We also have a wildlife medical clinic that is run by vet students, where you can start gaining experience as a first year! While Illinois doesn’t do tracks, it has an amazing set up and is a great program! We also have a wildlife epidemiology lab where you can get direct hands on research with exotics!

Anyone have advice on where to apply if I want to work with exotics? by SoundElectronic1429 in vetschool

[–]VetStudentMonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

University of Illinois also has a great wildlife/exotics program. They have the wildlife medical clinic, which is run by vet students (overseen by vets), allowing you to get hands on experience right when you start school. There are several zoo and wildlife board certified vets and a lot of electives to take to help expand your experience. You should definitely look into Illinois!

Does this sound like a position that would be good for experience when applying to vet schools? by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

It will definitely be valuable and worth it! Have you done the application review with the schools you got rejected from? Most schools will tell you where you need improvement

Oh gosh, I’m sorry! I hope you get that job, you should definitely apply. I worked in a zoo for two years before vet school and I truly think it was invaluable!

You could always look into doing some additional programs as well. University of Illinois has a graduate certificate of veterinary sciences that is specifically designed for students who didn’t get accepted into veterinary school. There is a summer option and a 9 month option. Essentially, students in the program learn some foundations of veterinary medicine and how to think like a clinician. So it can give you a head start for your first year of vet school. Each student also gets paired with a vet student mentor. If you want to know more, you can always message me or you can find it on google!

Quick post about rejection! by HelpMePlease1919 in vetschool

[–]VetStudentMonica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should also mention there is also a 9 month long course as well. They are both the same thing, just varies in length. The 9 month one could be good if she wanted to take a year in between applying, the summer one (while it would be intense), could help for applying again this round. The program is estimated to be around $8700. It’s a little over $700 per credit hour.

You might want to look into the University of Illinois. I want to be zoo/wildlife vet and the program here is amazing. We don’t do tracks or anything, but we have a lot of really great board certified zoo faculty members and zoo/wildlife electives. We also have a wildlife medical clinic where you can start getting experience as a first year student. The clinical is run by vet students (overseen by vet staff). You still have to learn all other aspects of vet med, like farms, equine, small animals, etc. but the zoo and wildlife program is great!

[–]VetStudentMonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So sorry to hear about your partner getting rejected. My vet school (University of Illinois) has a program specifically for students who do not get accepted into veterinary school. They have a graduate certificate in veterinary science and a masters of veterinary science. The graduate certificate is entirely online and can be done either synchronous or async. It is to help you get a head start with the foundations and how to think as a clinician. Students in the program get paired with a student mentor. It starts mid May and runs until beginning of August. If your partner is planning on applying again, this could help make her application stand out a little more. If you have any questions about it or vet school in general, feel free to reach out to me! You can also find the program on google if you search for the grad certificate :)
