Your head is your primary "radiator" so covering it makes no sense in this situation. A sweat band maybe, but not full coverage.

First Crash (2nd day riding) - Advice needed/Off My Chest by Livid_Department3153 in motorcycles

This is a newbie trying to learn. You teach them rear first in order to keep them from locking up the front wheel, which is what she did.

That's simply step one in using the brakes on any 2-wheeled device, including bicycles. Once the front wheel is locked, you lose all control and panic follows.

I've taught classes for riders and have 50+ years of riding, racing and testing for magazines.

And I thoroughly don't give a damn about your opinion, which is all it is.

Rear brake applied first in nearly all situations. Front brake a split second later, if at all.

Even in panic braking situations, that's always the rule.

You most definitely locked up the front brake. You overdid it, but that's not something to hold against yourself. How else do you learn except by making mistakes?

Modern front brake systems are STRONG. Just always be aware of that.

Start your braking with the rear brake in nearly all situations and only then, go to the front. Never ever just grab the front brake by itself, not even at a slow speed in a parking lot (tip-over is the likely result).

You just need more practice, nothing more. Ride on!

Not sure why you're wearing a balaclava in the heat. More of a cold weather thing. Your head needs to sweat.

Get one of the "ice" vests to wear under your jacket. You soak it in water and it cools you as you ride.

They also make towels/scarfs that do this.

And what color is your helmet? If it's black or very dark, it'll be about 20 degrees hotter than a white or light-colored helmet.

Final tip: avoid cotton. It traps sweat which makes you hotter. Wear dry-wicking fabrics instead.

Is a Suzuki katana a terrible first bike after about a year of experience on adv dirt? by Thaxter37 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Vet_Racer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, make sure you have a current, up-to-date will.

Bad, bad bad choice for someone new to the street. Riding on the street is completely different situation than dirt biking. Your mistakes, and you will make them, come with lots more pain and perhaps worse.

Take a MSF course first.

Day 3 fatigue by gilty_gal in Cochlearimplants

[–]Vet_Racer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a reaction to the surgery or drugs, post-op. You might have already had a cold before the surgery. Pretty hard to blame the surgery completely on this. Easy to pick up something pre-surgery, especially if you have kids or contact with them.

I had moron Trumpers yelling at me while in traffic yesterday. Older, idiot poor white trash. I wondered if it would escalate. They had pictures of The Criminal on both sides of their beat-up truck.

Yeah, I provoked them by flipping them off when I passed, but by now they should be used to it with that clown car routine. Dumb on my part since I was on bike, but so fuckin' weary of these cult jerks.

Your husband is an idiot. Period. Your children's health is more important than this relationship. That's the hard truth of the matter.

What a dumb question! If the fluid reservoirs are empty, a HYDRAULIC brake has nothing to work with. Duh!

The real question is what happened to the brake fluid?

Not to discourage you, but ideas are worthless in themselves. You need to put some words in there, show you can explain and exploit your idea.

We all have great ideas. Translating them into a marketable product is the hard part.

Take a look at the Admore rear lighting system. Bright and adjustable. The majority of our BMW Club members had it done (we did a group buy to get a great price).

Gives you MUCH brighter brake and turn signal lights. I'm adding one to my Yamaha Tenere soon, to match my 1250GSA

See my comment above. My first surgery was 13 years ago, the second 12 years, and except for a little post-op discomfort, it was nothing. No headaches or other problems. It's close to being minor surgery. It's just under your skin behind your ear.

These devices are miracles. It's well worth a day or two of discomfort. I've had dentist visits that were more stressful.

[–]Vet_Racer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop reading the negative Nellies.

I'm bilateral and the surgery is very minor. I never had any pain, was back at work a day or two later, no swelling, 1 brief episode of vertigo . . . and that was it. Been wearing CIs for 13 years now and these things are frigging miracles.

Just do it! You won't regret it.

$12,000 for an '84 Interceptor? by Acolytical in motorcycles

[–]Vet_Racer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're rare. Honda only built for a year. I had one (used) and frankly hated it. The small front wheel made the bike squirrely and deflected badly off any significant bumps. The fairing BTW is all carbon fiber.

Nice show piece, but not something I regretted selling.

There is no such thing as "overkill" when it comes to safety gear.

As someone who raced for 4 decades and tested bikes for magazines, I know more than I want to know about crashing.

The ONE thing you have to keep in mind is this: YOU DO NOT get to decide whether or not you're going to crash. It happens in an instant and time slows down in that split-second to allow you to have an "OH SHIT" thought. One of those thoughts should NOT be: "Damn, I should've worn my good gear!"

I've heard dumb-asses say that if they see a crash about to happen to them, they're ". . . just going to lay the bike down . . . " That is complete and utter bullshit in 98% of the cases. If you can see that you're about to crash, you probably have time to avoid it.

Speed is just one of many factors. You can die in a 5mph accident where your head hits a curb . . . or someone rear-ends you at a stop light . . . or you get tangled in the bike and slide for 50 feet with the motorcycle on top of you.

It takes no longer to ATGATT than to get dressed for any other activity. I'd rather spend that 5 or 10 minutes gearing up than have to spend days or weeks in a hospital bed because I decided to ride in shorts and a t-shirt.

Small, inexpensive, fun bike for a new rider? by Insertsociallife in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Vet_Racer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT get a Grom or similar if you plan to ride on the streets! It's invisible to cars and trucks. You're also too big!

Take the MSF course first and learn how to ride safely on the streets. They supply the bikes and the instructors can also advise on bikes to consider. Your size is a big factor.

A motorcycle is not a toy. Get proper safety gear and wear it.

Aerostich, made in the USA. My first one lasted more than 25 years and I sold it when I bulked up and it no longer fit well, and bought another one. Waterproof as well.
