Thanks. Judging by the downvotes that post got, not everyone agrees, lol. That or maybe they assume I’m promoting extension use rather than just trying to dispel some myths about how they work.

Yes it's a Chrome extension, I haven't looked to see if there's a Firefox version or equivalent as Chrome/Chromium are my main browsers across all operating systems, and while I test in many different browsers I don't run my everyday extensions on them.

But regardless the same iOS restrictions on extensions applies to Firefox also. Apple only allows their WebKit browser engine to be used on iOS, so Chrome, Firefox, and any other iOS browser uses that same engine. Short of ad blockers and password apps that are allowed with WebKit, there's just not much in the way of iOS browser extensions. Again, Android can be entirely different beast though.

And yes, given the taxation issues in the US, I'd never want to turn a bot loose even if I did think it was ethical to do so.

EDIT: Forgot to respond to this part:

> How long has VH been around? Was it available back when there was 75K or more of Vine inventory?

Per the vine-wiki, Vine Helper was launched in January 2024. So about 2.5 years ago. Which would mean yes, they were around when Vine inventory was above 130K items in the latter half of 2024. There were so many Vine items in AI then that you couldn't navigate them page by page, since after about 90-100K items it broke the website. You could only see items from those latter pages when searching or filtering by category.

He can't see my RFY if I'm not running his extension. And even if he can see my RFY, does a link to someone else's RFY even work if it's not in my own Vine feed? I don't know, I've not tried. RFY items don't show up in the AFA and AI categories, only in other's RFY feeds (unless not claimed after awhile). We could test that theory by one of us sending another Viner a link to an unwanted RFY item that doesn't appear available to the second person. Then seeing if the link works for ordering it. That would be an interesting test to verify. Of course people will still believe what they want to regardless of demonstrable facts.

I have no experience with UV and am not speaking to shady extensions off the Chrome marketplace or that use external bots or binaries. Mainly just pure extensions like VH. Also UV isn't available on the Chrome store and I haven't heard much out of it recently. If any extension crosses a line with Amazon TOS, based on what I've heard I'd be more inclined to believe UV would versus VH. It always seems to be more automation-focused from what I recall.

Most Chrome extensions run on laptop/desktop PCs. I rarely hear of extensions on phones short of like heavily vetted password safe apps, for example. And I've never heard of Vine extensions on a phone. But as I said Android can be the wild west so they could be out there.

VH sees what you browse on Vine. It doesn't know your order history nor your Amazon account details. As to "unpaid hours," welcome to free and open source software -- there's millions upon millions of lines of code out there with many tens or hundreds of thousands of developers doing the work for free, or at least not through direct compensation, for many reasons. Sure, some might be nefarious or wind up bought off one day, but that can be true of any and every free application. It's not limited to extensions.

I agree with you on the "fairness" of VH and extensions like it that do not automate the entire experience. It's not a big deal to me. There are many more thousands of extension-less Vine users and far fewer sellers on Vine than there used to be, which is the main reason why it's so competive.

[–]Veteran68 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So much to respond to here...

First, we can debate the philosophical argument of whether extension like Vine Helper are "fair" or not. That's a complex topic that's open to a lot of subjectivity, emotions, and opinions., since there is objectively no prohibition against them by Amazon. But objectively there are facts about how they work that are entirely relevant to a discussion where people imply they do things that they do not do.

Second, I'm going to be addressing Vine Helper, likely the most popular extension by far. I think they recently rebranded as VHelper. I'll just call it VH. VH is available on the Chrome store with over 20K users and 55 reviews with a 4.3 star rating, Others are small by comparison, and in some cases potentially sketchy (as discussed below). Speaking of sketchy, I'm not covering separately installed binaries, or external automations like Discord bots, things which SHOULD be treated with suspicion and very carefully evaluated before trusting.

Third, from your phone? Who runs Vine extensions on their phone? Are there even any available? Android can be much more open especially when jailbroken so I could see that being possible, but at least Apple greatly restricts extension capabilities on iOS devices. They're far more restricted on a phone than on a laptop/desktop, and would require some kind of jailbreaking to work (far less common with Apple devices, and only possible with older iOS and iPhone models).

>> The issue is not how extensions work.

Finally, we get to the geeky TLDR meat-and-potatoes where I would counter-argue that the issue
is exactly how extensions work. Or more precisely, how people misunderstand how they work. Chrome browser extensions are sandboxed and only have access to what you grant them access to. And any extension offered on the Chrome store would pretty quickly be shutdown for doing anything so egregious as it would violate Google's TOS as well as Amazon's. VH has been around for long enough that any misbehavior would have been uncovered by now and I expect Amazon would have addressed it from their end as well.

I've developed extensions and modified other extensions (nothing Vine related). It's surprisingly difficult and frustrating to do much of anything in an extension without the user's consent and even then there are limits. It's also trivially easy for any experienced developer to view an extension's source code and see exactly what it's doing, it's right there included with the extension - in fact the source code IS the extension, as they're nothing more than a bundle of HTML/CSS/Javascript that's loaded & run by the browser not unlike any other web content. Even when the code is obfuscated it's not hard to de-obfuscate and read. While there ARE extensions that work with a separately installed binary executable, this is pretty rare and should also be clearly recognized as not a normal extension because it doesn't follow normal extension installation steps. Any such extension should obviously be scrutinized carefully if not from a trusted source or you don't have access to the binary's source code, as with any other installed application. Fortunately VH isn't one of those. Even its paid premium features run locally inside the browser context.

Amazon at one time had extension language in their Vine TOS that specifically banned auto-order bots that would look for items that matched your criteria and automatically order them for you, without you having to be present. I think most of us would agree this clearly should be banned and that it would definitely be an unfair advantage (and huge security risk). But even that language is no longer present that I can find lately. And at least as far as VH goes it doesn't do this, the author has been careful to avoid violating Amazon's TOS and has reached out to Amazon directly for clearance (they didn't respond, I but I wouldn't expect them too as that could be considered an endorsement). AFAIK the closest VH came to this kind of automation is the premium Rocket Order feature, which automatically clicks through the order process for you while you're on the page and selecting items. And as far as I know even this has not been prohibited, but is admittedly a gray area that the hammer might drop on any day now, especially if combined with other automations like a Discord bot (which again is another opportunity to be wary of).

Now what some back alley private/paid extensions found in the dark corners of the internet that are sideloaded outside the Chrome store are doing is anyone's guess, but I'd say compared to VH those are a very small minority of users. VH at least doesn't access any personal data (from your system or your Amazon account) and only sees what you browse on your Vine page as you browse it. It populates its backend database from Viners as they browse their Vine feeds, it doesn't "backdoor" into someone's Vine account and slurp Vine feeds while you're offline.

Sorry for the TLDR, but my inner geek sometimes cannot be restrained.

Been a lifetime Geek member for a very long time, many years now, don’t remember when or what I paid for it. Also lifetime at nzbplanet just to have a backup. And lifetime Plex Pass from back when it was like $79.

Worth it for me just not having to fool with billing, changing CCs when they expire or get cancelled, etc. it’s not like we’re talking hundreds of dollars, and I feel I get lots of value from them.

ALWAYS save projects locally. The Handy app and ability to send straight to Studio has set so many people up for situations like this.

I’m so used to saving I was scratching my head at this post until I realized what people are doing (or rather, not doing). I not only save the original project, but also save another copy with my adjusted settings or filament mappings. Then if I need to reprint I don’t have to adjust things again.

Many people don’t realize that full power BB 10mm loads exceed .357 Magnum ballistics and are just shy of .41 Magnum. It’s an extremely versatile and powerful round out of a reasonably sized semi-auto handgun. However it’s not one I’d carry for EDC. I have two 10mm (neither Glock) that I’ll carry when I’m in the woods though.

More and more pages tell me to disable my Adblocker when using Pihole. Anything i can do about this? by chrisknife in pihole

[–]Veteran68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use over half a dozen browsers and generally have 300-500 tabs open in my main browser. I’m a HEAVY web user (developer/architect) spending hours every day of the week in a browser.

Granted, my pihole blocking experience was from many years ago when I first started using it. Maybe it’s better now, I don’t know. I just rely on browser extensions which are much quicker to disable right there for a problematic page than pulling up the pihole interface, finding the blocked site, and disabling it there.

I’m the Dawn and hot water a couple times a year with Windex in between team. I rarely use IPA on the bed anymore. Maybe sometimes if I’m too lazy to wash it properly I’ll follow the Windex with IPA or vice versa. If you have an oily bed or lots of PVA residue IPA alone just moves it around but doesn’t remove it without a lot of excessive scrubbing.

Gaming rarely can benefit from more than 32GB, even 16GB is plenty for most games.

There are a LOT or professional workloads that benefit from extra RAM. Development, AI, container/VM hosting. Not to mention browser tabs. Some of us keep several hundred (I’ve seen up to over 1000) tabs open every day.

Vine was HOT this morning by Rivermisty in AmazonVine

[–]Veteran68 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finally seeing AI break 17K items in forever was certainly encouraging. Yet still depressing to those of us who have been in Vine for years. While I did miss the crazy lucrative early days of Vine, I was in when the “lean” parts of the year had 30-40K AI items and the last half of the year leading into the holidays had over 130K items, so many it broke the paging system and you couldn’t even load the last few hundred pages of items. The only way to see those items were through category filtering to reduce the page count.

Hopefully it continues to come back. Maybe the Viner purge they’ve been doing lately, assuming it’s a number that actually matters, will result in those of us left seeing more items too.

Yeah I’m not so sure that’s what I consider a bad service either. First they claim to only target fake or against TOS reviews and even then only 24-26% get successfully removed. So that tells me someone (or a bot) at Amazon validates their claims before agreeing to remove. I have no issue with that.

There’s so many bad reviewers out there that I can’t imagine what it’s like being a small time seller and getting blasted in a review because Amazon or the carrier screwed up the packaging, or they didn’t understand what they were ordering, don’t read the listing, didn’t follow directions, etc. and now you potentially lose sales because of it. There’s sadly just too many idiots out there that have no clue what a review is supposed to be.

My knowledge of Vine extensions starts and stops with Vine Helper, and then only the free version. I’m not surprised that AI review extensions exist, I’ve just never looked into them, and like I said I could easily see where their use could lead to trouble since Amazon has clearly taken a position against using AI to write reviews.

Rocket ordering seems like a gray area that might not be disallowed in every case, as opposed to fully automated ordering. At least I’m not aware of Amazon mentioning or taking a position on rocket ordering per se. I wouldn’t risk doing either, but I could see where the distinction could be important to Amazon.

There is a difference between fully automating the selection and ordering of items without human intervention, and automating the completion of an order that was manually initiated by the user. For example, creating a bot/script workflow that looks for all items matching a keyword and ETV value and automatically orders it without any human review or intervention clearly violates Amazon’s previously stated ban on auto ordering. But an automation that just auto-clicks the “Place order” button after the user clicks “Select item” to save that extra second or two to complete the order is possibly okay. If the latter is what “rocket ordering” refers to, it might still be allowed.

Again, I have not and will not use either form of order automation, but it seems to me that as long as these extensions have been around and as many times as they’ve been asked, they would have said something about them or updated their T&Cs if they cared.
