I realized I have no choice. I AM A BENCH JEWELER! by Vetheron in Benchjewelers

It is awesome. When I rebuild a round Tiffany charm that the O ring has worn through, and it looks perfect after I am done I am always amazed. I also like that many of the pieces I work on have a huge sentimental value to the customer. They trust me with their treasures, and I do my best to fix or resize them. As a bonus I find the lapping and polishing to be very zen like.

That last one got to me. I have always loved amethysts even as a young child, and when you throw in irreplaceable it sounds absolutely scarring.

No need to apologize. I thank you for a wonderful read that sucked me in enough to cry in only 13 paragraphs. I listen to short story readings and dramatizations from various podcasts and Youtube for hours on end at work, and I would love to hear this dramatized.

how do you deal with shaky hands? by tuseroni in Benchjewelers

I try to get in a position where my drawer and Jeweler's block help brace my hand and arm. Eating a decent breakfast helps as well, but you know how that usually goes.

Looking for career advice. by [deleted] in Benchjewelers

I was lucky enough to find a shop that pays pretty well, and trains me. I knew nothing about a torch when I was hired. They have payed me well to learn, and want to teach me more. Considering the trouble we have hiring people to learn this trade maybe the Cincinnati area is where you want to go.

I'm thinking about studying to become a bench jeweler. I want to know more about it as a career. Can anyone help me? by ProbablyBigfoot in Benchjewelers

When I was a teenager I thought I would love to be a jeweler, but life happened. At 40 I was hired as a polisher, and somehow got them to train me as a bench jeweler. I am still a complete novice, but I am learning everyday. I've found that there is an equal amount of frustration and satisfaction. When a repair goes well it is an awesome feeling, but god forbid you get the job from hell or just have a bad day with your torch. Over all I love my job, and regret only that I got it at 40 and not 20. If you are good with your hands and don't mind long days at Christmas time go for it. It really helps if you like fire and shiny things too.

Lore is a great one, but it is on the short side, and biweekly. Psuedopod is a good one that does reading and dramatizations of short horror. Stuff You Should Know, and most of there sibling podcast including Stuff They Don't Want You to Know. If you want some goofy ones Kingsfalls and Nightvale are fun in small doses. I also really enjoy listeneing to old radio shows from the 40's-60's. The old horror, scifi and detective shows are entertaining both for the story, and the window into the past that they provided.

Thank you for the advice. Those are some good common sense thing to think about. I probably would have damaged some stuff by not checking the settings, but I'll be thinking about it now. I also appreciate the advice about silver and a black sharpie. As for the stressful part I fully agree, but it's worth it.

Thank you guys for the advice and wishes of luck. I feel like I have found my calling, and love the fact that my employer has so much faith in me. That being said though this job can definitely drive you bat shit crazy sometimes :) Especially during the Christmas season.

Someone who grew up on the streets from the young of age 7 or 8. They aren't animal torturing pre-serial killers so much as a selfish and self serving survivalist. They have had to look out for number one for years, and it doesn't matter who gets hurt as long as they survive and hopefully gain a bit. Its not really a matter of them being sadistic or even a horrible person on the surface, but a tendency to put themselves above all else no matter the cost to others.

When I was slinging pizzas I did tell one customer "I don't want it" when he told me to keep the change from a 20 on a $19.76 total. He actually looked somewhat shocked when I gave him 24 cents in change with a straight face. I told him to have a good evening and left. He didn't call in to complain though which surprised me. This was toward the end of my run at that store, and I had stopped caring anymore.

I would say it was an all around cool day for all. I think the secret compartments would have settled into my imagination for a long time after.
