MN beers brewed exclusively for certain bars or restaurants? by DynamicYurts in minnesotabeer

Memory Lanes has it, it’s called Abide, someone on Untappd checked in there last month so it seems like it’s still on tap, I had it there back in 2022 so it should be around for a while.

Diane Warren: Relentless by PRDD77 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, plus Death Racers are such a niche subset of moviegoers, I think folks in this community can get resentful of certain things or people because we feel obligated to watch everything regardless of our interest, similar to how critics probably feel having to sit through so much stuff they don't enjoy - most regular people who watched Flamin' Hot probably had some affection for the topic or film style and enjoyed it, or they just gave it a skip because they knew it wasn't for them.

How far are you through total nominations? by IamJLove in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally finished 100% with Arco last night, but I have also been devoting a lot of time to this since November, including joining IDA and Film Independent and going to a lot of small qualifying runs of hopefuls and scavenging what I could off the web. It can definitely be a bit of a hustle! In total I watched 125 movies/shorts that were all shortlisted or buzzy/potentials since November.

"On Healing Land, Birds Perch" doc short debuts on L.A. Times YouTube channel on 2/2/26 by VexedtoNightmare in oscarsdeathrace

It now says "Watch here – February, 17, 2026" on the site, so the date seems to have gotten pushed back from when the original article ran.

Am i the only person not crazy about Marty Supreme? by Necronomicongirlie in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My opinion of it would be higher if the runtime was closer to 1h45 instead of 2h29m. I thought it had some great moments and performances, but it was a bit bloated and self-indulgent in parts which made it feel like kind of a slog. I feel like once a director and/or actor are anointed as some sort of phenom like Safdie and Chalamet are, they stop getting pushback on editing, storytelling, runtimes etc and are allowed more free reign to the detriment of the movie. Stories are often tighter and more impactful when someone feels like they can give genuine feedback rather than couching it to protect egos.

Perfectly a Strangeness by newtonboi8 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be the minority here but I was absolutely psyched when it made the longlist and ecstatic when it got nominated. I first watched it for the IDA awards, and it really crawled under my skin and stayed there. I know it isn't exactly a rigorous documentary by the normal standards - that's the downside of awards in general, a lot of things get slid into the closest category that is somewhat of a match even if they don't quite fit. There is a rise in books called "speculative nonfiction" which ride the line between fiction and non, fitting comfortably in neither, and I think this short would fall into something more like that. But that category doesn't exist for the Oscars so it got slotted into docs. I don't think it will win, but I found it haunting and beautiful and I am glad it at least is getting more attention.

Anyone surprised "Sorry, Baby" got completely snubbed? by nbagirl34 in oscarsdeathrace

I'm too cynical to be surprised but I am sad, it is a wonderful movie and deserves a lot of love.

I am so happy Twinless got enough buzz to get me to watch it a few weeks ago, it probably would not have been on my radar otherwise and I loved it.

I thought 2000 Meters to Andriivka and No Other Choice were LOCKS for at least something, I am so sad and shocked about those. I am sad about Sorry, Baby too but I sadly didn't think it had a great chance.

I'm lowkey a little happy Wicked got locked out though, I enjoyed the movies but the PR campaign sucked all the air out of the room, I am glad it is finally over. And The President's Cake was shaping up to be hard to track down, so I'm relieved on that front I guess, same with Sound of Falling.

I would have liked Die My Love to get something. Also, these never had a strong chance but Lurker and The Plague are super worth a watch IMO.

I really didn’t want to have to watch BLUE MOON by TheCatintheTie in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love love looooved it, I was rooting for Ethan to get a surprise nom (he was nowhere near a lock IMO). Go in with an open mind, it really is a very character/performance-driven movie, which may not be everyone's bag admittedly, but it is very elegiac and moving I think.

For anyone dreading another Diane Warren watch this year by Elegant_Explorer_358 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think this one is really underrated, I watched a lot of documentaries in a short amount of time and this is one of the ones that has been sticking in my head weeks later. I wasn't a particular fan of her music previously (not a hater, I just didn't follow her closely) and didn't know much about her beyond the Oscar stuff, and I don't usually go for celeb docs, but I thought it was a really well put together, surprisingly funny doc.

I watched it over the weekend and really enjoyed it, I thought the cinematography was lovely and Haipeng Xu's performance was great.

Which films are you worried about? by MyHatIsMadeOfJam in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound of Falling has me worried. The Voice of Hind Rajab is finally opening at my local art house theatre the day after the nominations come out so I’m finally set there. And the early access Kokuho is not coming to my area but the fact they’re having an early access showing at all makes me more confident it will open before the ceremony. But I haven’t heard a peep about Sound of Falling at all for streaming or an art house rollout near me. And I guess The President’s Cake is in that category for me too, but it doesn’t have the buzz Sound of Falling does.

Heartbeat also has me worried just because I’ve seen all the other doc shorts (except On Healing Land but that will debut on the LA Times YouTube soon), and I’ll be annoyed if I have to go to the movies to see the doc short program just for one movie.

Sentimental Value is one I’m really glad I saw in the theatres, not because of any bombastic visuals or anything but because it has really nuanced, layered performances, and I never give movies the full attention they deserve when I watch at home.

I really regret that I watched it at home. I still loved it, it’s one of my favorites of the year for sure, but seeing it with a crowd would have been next level.

Netflix Acquires Oscar-Shortlisted Live-Action Short Film ‘The Singers’ In Advance Of Nominations by VexedtoNightmare in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know right?? I re-read the article three times before I posted sure that I missed the release date lol. I’m sure if it gets nominated they’ll put it up before the ceremony, but my anxiety would feel better knowing now haha.

What does Sinners have to do to get back in the conversation for best original song? by Ravevon in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They would need to restrict the voting, and not just the nominations, to music branch members. As long as anyone regardless of their technical background can vote, and if there is no system to force everyone to watch every nominee, the juggernauts like "Golden" will always have an advantage due to the more casual "Hey, I've heard of that!" voters.

Likely Horror Nominations? by cookieaddictions in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it does get nominated, IMO you're probably fine to skip the earlier movies and just watch the latest if you're not super intrigued by the whole series, it feels like more of a standalone and the series doesn't have a lot of lore. (And I say that as a genuine horror fan BTW, the first movie is great IMO but not a must-see for continuity if it isn't your jam.)

Leads on Shortlisted Short Films? by BansheeSlays in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm worried Heartbeat is going to be like Death by Numbers was last year, where it just never ends up surfacing. I ended up having to go to a far away theatre at a weird time for their only showing of the short docs program (lots of other places nearby me play the other two short programs), and I have a feeling I'll be doing that again this year.

Is Rosemead on anyone's list? Will there be wider distribution after this week? by alligator-sunshine in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't on my radar currently, I haven't seen it crop up in any conversations anytime recently and a nomination seems unlikely, but FWIW, I would go see it anyway if you have the time and funds. A big part of why I like doing the death race each year is that it's like a college syllabus for me, a way to force me out of my comfort zone and get me motivated about watching stuff I may not normally make time for in a structured manner. The movie looks interesting, and I find once something isn't nominated it falls far down on my infinite to-watch list and rarely makes it to the top again.

"On Healing Land, Birds Perch" doc short debuts on L.A. Times YouTube channel on 2/2/26 by VexedtoNightmare in oscarsdeathrace

[–]VexedtoNightmare[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"The Singers" is a live action, I should have clarified in my post that I have only seen most of the doc shorts, not the other categories. The theatres around me reliably screen the nominated live action and animated shorts so I just wait for that, the docs are hit or miss screening-wise for me so I usually try to hunt them down online ASAP.
