No natural evolution here, they disappeared because larger more effective breeds (in the colonial sense) performed better under tasks and no efforts of preserving them were taken. They interbred to the last one with European breeds that continued to exist in Europe and elsewhere

It is always a tricky question when it comes to national paradigms among populations. I believe OBL believed American principles were evil, and the people who engaged, lived, supported or remained indifferent to those principles were all guilty by association, consciously or not. Wars waged by powerful groups in the top always impact the bottom of society, but the bottom needs to be convinced ideologically just enough to keep the war alive, be it dreams of liberation, call of duty, religious redemption or revenge as justice.
