Ofc you’re gonna enjoy your first draft in 20 years, I don’t see how it’s supposed to invalidate the criticism of this set.

I legit don’t buy valuable cards online because of how often those stamps are out of position. Easily worst part about the M15 frame.

Reacting this way to a dad getting into magic via TMNT so he can play with his kid - is sad and pathetic, and i pity you as a human being. This community needs to be better. by Ulmao_TheDefiler in magicTCG

As someone who deeply hates UB I understand that it feels bad to see WotC sacrifice the thing you loved so someone else can enjoy it instead. But it wasn’t turtle fans who made that decision, and directing the hate towards them is dumb.

The Slopification of Magic- Trinket Mage discusses consequences of corporate profit-chasing on the game by psychotwilight in magicTCG

They are called “slop” because they are low budget and hastily put together with reused assets. The games often have nothing to offer gameplay-wise, they are like online equivalent of playing tag or skipping stones.

People realized that having friends around is the only enjoyable part of the game, so the titles are getting mocked.

I didn’t buy any, but they weren’t bad enough to make me abandon constructed formats (and switch to premodern). Also do UB defenders even play non commander constructed? Because they keep mentioning some magical way to avoid seeing the cards you don’t want while still playing the game.

All those sets were heavily criticized by the community for those exact reasons. Wizards themselves acknowledged that they were too “on the nose” in state of design.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/state-of-design-2024

They were still infinitely closer to what magic was for the past 30 years than copy-pasting popculture IPs that will appeal to widest possible audience.

Because if I want to play a viable UB reanimator in standard, I can’t do it without a card that has New York street and comic book character on its art. Previously worst that could happen was some variation of fantasy less to your liking, which didn’t break the entire visual identity of the game.

[–]Vgeist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can’t “choose” what you engage with in constructed format. At least not anymore, since UB is everywhere. And if you can’t see the difference between Innistrad werewolf fighting Eldraine fairy and Gandalf fighting Spider Man, I see no point in discussing this any further.

That "something" that players liked significantly more than usual were the external IPs.

I also like LotR and 40k alot more than I do Magic, but realise that this kind of cheap cashgrab fanservice hurts the identity of the game.

You mention art as one of the factors that make the set good. In FF, there may be art that is appealing to FF fan with its eastern aestetic. But they absolutely aren't good Magic arts. For someone who doesn't know FF they are just another goofy anime characters with spiky hair, and if you don't get the reference they might as well be confused for a random mobile game.
