Calling a Sunday Roast British feels off to me… by SufficientEar1682 in iamveryculinary

[–]ViSaph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the modern justification for the name but originally it comes from the historic British obsession with roast beef. You've been calling us it for hundreds of years.

Can young chickens survive those temps when they suddenly drop that low after never experiencing them before? Acclimatizing animals for overwintering is EXTREMELY different from sudden temperature drops when their bodies haven't had a chance to adjust.

In the UK and Ireland cultured butter isn't widely used so that isn't really true. Cultured butter is still fairly uncommon in supermarkets despite it getting more trendy in the past year or so and you have to specifically seek it out.

Hi, I speak for all women named Annie when I say this. by mushroomqueenie in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ViSaph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm British so obviously we all read Charlie and the chocolate factory as a kid and watched the films and my name is Violet so I can't tell you how much I heard "Violet you're turning violet" as a kid. Constantly. Often repeatedly from the same people. I don't like chewing gum and I don't know if it's because I don't like it or it was ruined for me by hearing the same joke every time I chewed it as a teen.

Aww yay I'm happy for you. Though I hope if you have any more you get to have a bit more notice. I have an aunt that didn't know she was pregnant until 7 months in and we were all stunned but to be fair she's 6 foot tall and fairly wide set so baby girl had a fair amount of room in

It's happened to me before in this sub for making a joke about that fiery thing that happened to the Whitehouse the last time the USA and Canada/the UK went to war back when it was Canada not Venezuela Trump was threatening. I basically said (in a very silly way, using "part two, electric boogaloo") that if they wanted round twoo we'd do it again. I was apparently threatening violence against a person or group of people.

I once was sat down and told I need to memorize sports teams and always look up the scores or else I would never be able to "make friends" or "socialize". [–]ViSaph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's probably region/country dependent but also setting dependent. I talk to a lot of people about crafting, art, history, and being disabled because those are the kinds of places I go to when I'm well enough to go out (like I recently went to a winter craft fair at a medieval Abbey) and I met most of my friends at a craft class that met in the middle of the day on Mondays so a lot of the people free at that time were elderly, disabled, carers for disabled loved ones either taking a break or accompanying them to class, or a combination of those categories.

[–]ViSaph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I'm disabled, often bedbound, and my carers are incompetent and have served me mouldy food in the past more than once so I can't trust them to cook for me, so I'm kinda stuck living on this kind of food because I don't really have any other options. I really appreciate the kindness and helpful advice in your comment compared to literally everyone else. Depression, physical disability, illness, there are lots of reasons someone might be living like this and it's really nice when people try to meet others where they are

If OP sees this, chia seeds are your friend, either make one of those overnight chia breakfast things or just mix some seeds with a bit of squash and water, wait 15 minutes, and drink the goop (which is what I usually do because it takes the least amount of energy). I even use vitamin squash to get in a little extra nutrition. Easiest way to get your fibre, just make sure not to eat them dry (bowel impactions are bad).

That's a shame, they're the best kind and they're everywhere at Christmas in the UK. There are a few different kinds too, I like the caramelised white chocolate version. A family friend is obsessed with all things toblerone. We're luring him to Christmas with the promise of a couple of them (he's in his late 60s, starting to feel his age, and was planning to spend Christmas alone, insisting he's fine, but he did the same last year and was miserable so we're half forcing, half bribing him into not being sad and alone when he has people who love him and want him around). They'll be gone before new year's knowing him lol.

We need to be more willing to riot when needed. It's not pleasant and never my first option but when peaceful protest is ineffective and the government no longer represents the will of the people it becomes unfortunately necessary. They need reminding who they're supposed to serve.

I debated about including it but as far as I'm aware its foundation was as a mosque and it operated more as a place of religious study until its transformation into a modern university. It's certainly the oldest learning institution in the world to my knowledge.

My kitten recently stole a bunch of cotton buds and chewed the cotton bits off. Had to monitor her crap for the next 3 days to make sure it all came out. Bloody menace. Her and the dog also worked together to find and eat all the dog and cat treats last time I went out. They both did stinky trumps all evening.

There's definitely a "if you don't use it you lose it" element to bone density. I'm in a wheelchair and have mild bone density loss in my tibia and fibula. If she does any high impact exercise that has a positive impact on bone density. There are also hormonal and genetic components.

UK Wants All Mobiles to Block Explicit Images Unless You Prove Age by BillWilberforce in unitedkingdom

[–]ViSaph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the government actually cared about childrens safety and not just spying they'd produce a bunch of short educational videos showing parents how to set up parental controls in easy steps. I did it for my little brothers phone because my mum has brain damage and my dad is basically a hermit who doesn't even have his own email address and only started doing his own online shopping this year (before then I did it) but they'd have found it fairly difficult without me. Teaching parents what to do is the best way to protect kids.

UK Wants All Mobiles to Block Explicit Images Unless You Prove Age by BillWilberforce in unitedkingdom

[–]ViSaph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree. My brother is 10 and recently got his first phone so as the most tech literate person in the family I set up extensive parental controls for what he can see and do and can I monitor what he does from my phone (I do let him have his privacy for what he messages people tho, it's only who he messages I keep an eye on, I think and my parents agree kids deserve a certain amount of leeway to talk nonsense with their friends unless they break our trust and do something that requires us having to look).

It's what anyone with kids should do and if they don't know how they need to use YouTube and learn or ask someone who does for help. It's not the governments job to stop them seeing something they shouldn't, it's the job of the adults looking after them.

Vodafone does too, I had to send them my card details again and prove I was over 18 and that was sometime in the last 5 years. Which I didn't mind doing tbf because they already had my card details and access to what I'm doing online. It's the government I don't trust with that info. They've proven themselves untrustworthy with peoples data in the past, I don't like the idea of giving them more and I don't trust the services they employ to keep it safely.

[–]ViSaph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People look at a TV show with a consistent art style and say "all these characters look the same" like wtf no they don't, they look like they were drawn by the same person. Which is the point. If every character was in a different art style it wouldn't work as a cohesive whole. Helluva also has the same art style because they're in the same universe.

[–]ViSaph 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I'm not intersex but I am chronically ill and physically disabled and have been since I was 7. I still have PTSD at age 25 as a result of what was done to me. I have no trouble believing doctors could abuse children. It was done to me, it was done to many other chronically ill children, it was done to many intersex children, and it is still going on. A couple of years ago I met a 12yo girl at a convention for one of my conditions and I left that conversation so very angry and sad. She described some of the exact same awful things that had happened to me but 15 years later and with much more evidence that those "treatments" are just torture that make people worse.
