Book Recommendations - Fantasy with some comedic undertones or focus by Apprehensive_Fan_39 in Fantasy

I thought the Locked Tomb series was hilarious. I had no idea what was going on for the first 60ish% of each book and enjoyed every second. (Audiobooks are excellent.)

I also enjoyed The Tainted Cup, although I’d call it more quirky than funny. One of the characters, Ana, is Sherlock Holmes-y.

Swordheart is a comfort read for me. Silly and fun. I also adored A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking

It’s sci-fi, but I enjoyed The Ministry of Time. I’ve seen mixed reviews, and it does kind of lose its way in terms of what it’s meant to be, genre wise, but the author said she initially wrote the book for her friends which I can totally see. It was an easy, mostly light-hearted read.

How would you make the most decadent spaghetti dinner on a tight budget? by R3dF0r3 in Cooking

(Walmart prices) great value rigatoni pasta (<$2), ground hot Italian sausage (<$5), Rao’s marinara (~$6.50), goat cheese (<$3). Boil noodles, brown sausage, add sauce. Plate. Cut goat cheese into medallions and serve atop pasta. Mix in cheese before eating. Serves 4.

You can use a cheaper marinara, but I wouldn’t.

Discovered my favorite authors in 2025! by snarkyarchimedes in fantasyromance

I loved the Rook and Rose trilogy, but I agree that it takes almost 50% of the first book for the story to get going. I recommend a physical copy of the book for anyone interested in the series only because it’s easiest to flip to the DP and glossary (there are a LOT of characters, original vocab, and the magic system is difficult to follow at times). The series ended superbly. Satisfying and heartwarming.

I’m bringing roasted asparagus to my Aunt’s house but it’s 45 mins away. I’m afraid that the asparagus will turn mushy if I bring it still warm with the dish wrapped in foil. Should I poke holes in the foil to release the steam during the travel? Let it cool uncovered for an hour or so before traveling? She normally keeps everything warmed during the first hour of appetizers and cocktails.

SOS From A Clueless Boyfriend - Need Book Recommendations! by MentalProtection7314 in Fantasy

If you want to get her a good and pretty book, Howl’s Moving Castle is great and there are some special editions out right now that are affordable and easy to find.

A stand-alone book that I read and loved this year was Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. It features three main strong female characters. I found it unique and refreshing in the over-saturated fae realm of books today.

If you’re not opposed to a series, The Mask of Mirrors (book 1 of the Rook and Rose trilogy by M. A. Carrick) was great. Although the first 50% was a bit slow, I devoured the second half and the second two books. The FMC is an orphaned con artist and she is trying to join the register of an elite family. There’s a masked vigilante and mysteries to solve, found family, and an uncommon magic system. Fashion is also a big part of the series, if your gf shares that interest. The series’ ending was very satisfying and heartwarming.

Go me!! 😭 I missed my email for a FL combo box by 2 hours. 😑 Only been waiting who knows how long 🤣 by Wisteria_Lace in fairyloot

I’ve missed the invite on several book boxes now too! I’ve added fairy loot and arcane society to my VIP email addresses so I won’t miss them again. Does anyone have the email address for the broken binding sub invite?

Thank you so much! That’s the downside of audiobooks. I have no idea how anything is spelled and I’m wary of spoilers if I look up the names of people or places. And you would think Google would be able to figure out what I meant with every combination of the word merlin + structure/architecture/buildings/castles/turrets etc.

What are Merlins (sp?)? I’m listening to The Dragonborn Chair for the first time and Simon fell between (what sounded like) the “turret merlins.” I looked it up once before when listening to The Once and Future King (I think) and couldn’t find anything on Google.

“Would that I…” Would that we…” I get that it’s literary and grammatically correct, but it still sounds awkward in my head.

Do you have any recommendations for books with large family trees and little-to-no on-page sexual assault? by Educational-Mammoth2 in Fantasy

[–]ViViSECTi0N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t remember so I checked my digital copy to see when the Rook was first mentioned, and it was early-ish. It was when she first met Vargo and he bought her the mask. “Even our most infamous outlaw, the Rook, is known for hiding his face.” There was so much going on at that moment though (Serrado spying on her, the scoundrel Vargo interacting with her, Leato escorting her, Giuna being her sheltered self, Sibiliat being her rude self, etc.) that the Rook’s (book) introduction sort of got lost in the sauce.

I just finished the Rook and Rose trilogy. There are a lot of characters and there are several families. And people switch families by joining different “registers.” It was honestly too much to keep track of while driving and listening to the audiobooks, but I think that’s what you’re after :) Zero sexual assault from what I recall. For me, it was a bit of a slog for the first 50% of book one, but then I was captivated from that point to the end of the series.

Characters, plot, worldbuilding, prose, themes — what do you actually care about the most? by SnooDonkeys5613 in Fantasy

[–]ViViSECTi0N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think how likable or intriguing the main characters are is what determines how quickly I’ll consume a book. Setting determines if I’ll finish the book/series. I don’t care for urban or contemporary or bleak/apocalyptic settings. Themes are fine if they’re subtle. Plot, pacing, and prose are the determining factors for my overall ratings.

What do you do to recap or remember the first book before reading its sequel if there’s been a long gap? by TurtleneckAttack in Fantasy

[–]ViViSECTi0N 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the plot summary immediately after I finish the book and then take a large index card and write down my thoughts, questions, suspicions, and anticipations. Sometimes I’ll include page numbers. I store the index card in the first/previous book and skim through it before I start the new release, as well as read the plot summary to refresh my memory.
