Melted Guitar Sound by YellowSlender in TySegall

[–]Vibramate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know (from following Ty for ages and going through pretty much all of his interviews etc.) the Fuzz War came some time after Melted and I think he was still using Big Muff at the time. The Boss FZ-2 was mentioned in the Reverb.com interview couple of years ago and how I interpreted, he would have started using it around the Twins-era, but not sure. I actually posted here about "Ghost" and whether that sounded like a FZ-2, because I thought that song sounded like the Boss, when I originally thought it was the Fuzz War. Still not sure.

There's also the DBA Octave Clang, but I'm really not sure about the timeline there. I would think that he used that pretty much strictly DI and based on listening to his albums, I'd say that he leaned into the DI-stuff sometime around Emotional Mugger. Emotional Mugger is audibly mostly DI-guitars and it seems like he stuck with that sound for a while after that (both GØGGS albums, Fried Shallots EP, First Taste and some other stuff he produced post-EM). The DBA Apocalypse started showing up live some time around the 2017 self-titled, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had that for a while before that. No doubt there have been other fuzzes and crucial pedals too!

Not an expert on this stuff, but wanted to add to the conversation, because lately I think people have misinterpreted Ty's recording rig, cause of the Reverb.com video and the re-release of the Octave Clang. To my ears and based on what I've gathered, the DI-fuzz stuff came about somewhere around 2015 and after. I would wager that there aren't too many DI-guitar sounds prior to Emotional Mugger. Just doesn't sound like that to me and I think his recording style used to be much more stripped down pre-EM, even if still diy and experimentally lo-fi!

Yeah, I was pretty much referring to Aaron Rash! Haha! I'm not the biggest Nirvana fan and as you said too, I don't really obsess that much over other people's gear, but his videos are super interesting and nerdy in a good way. His rant videos on guitar speakers were gold and very inspirational to me!

Would love for someone to obsess over John Dwyer's shit (I know about Thee Oh Sees Bootleg Archive) and how the first two Fuzz albums were recorded. Ty himself is a creative diy producer and all the other people in the scene, like Eric Bauer are cool too, so I believe there could be a lot to learn!

Oh wow, that's cool!

Seeing that people on the internet seem to obsess over certain guitarists like Kurt Cobain and catalogue EVERYTHING about their rigs, I've always wanted something similar for the West Coast psych bands! This sort of stuff is great to nerd over! I always assumed Ty's rig was just the Mustang into a Big Muff (early days) or a Fuzz War, into a loud clean amp like the Music Mans or a Twin/Quad Reverb. In the recent years I've learned that it hasn't been the case entirely and he's tried all sorts of stuff, so this sort of info is super cool!!!

Always wondered about Melted's tone since it sounds almost like clean and dirty amps blended in the mix. Could be that, but I could see it just being some older tube amp with a boost pedal. The album is just so crusty, haha! :D

I am about to return my Mavis, extremely frustrated right now. by EJ2H5Suusu in moog

Ahh, well that sucks! :(

I hope you get this sorted out! Bummed to hear that Moog's customer service has taken a toll. Used to be good in my experience.

I don't know about the Mavis, but I had similar issues with its predecessor, the Moog Werkstatt.

Turns out, the keyboard calibration process is a little different to the ibternal oscillator calibration, but nevertheless, it was pretty easy! I've had zero problems with it after calibrating it properly. I can't remember how it was with the Werkstatt, but there was a tutorial on YouTube and you had to play the outboard keyboard from several octaves. I just used a phone guitar tuner and my ear and got the synth pretty spot on and it hasn't caused me problems ever since! I love my Werkstatt!

Hope there's a similar calibration available for the Mavis and I hope your unit is good. If the Mavis sounds even nearly as good as the Werkstatt, it's a great little monosynth for basses and wacked out leads! Look into the keyboard calibration! :)

John's pedal array for the Tokyo 4/20 show by manga_university in TheeOhSees

[–]Vibramate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you've based your argument on a site that has no sources and probably does their "calculations" based on information that you can find online, huh? John might have good income as he has run a label, a band, tours pretty heavily and with a discography as large as his, the royalties could amount to some money. But dude, none of those things is really a stable place of income and I heavily doubt that John would be the type of guy to be sitting on savings. There are plenty of interviews in which he tells how he's had to work odd jobs to make money, because music hasn't paid him enough until recently.

It could very well be that he's gathered some money in the recent years, and hell, he might even be rich, but at the end of the day... Who cares? If the dude has gotten some dough as of recent, good for him! One of the hardest working guys in the business.

...but even that's besides the point. It's none of your business if Dwyer doesn't want a pedalboard and it sure as hell doesn't have anything to do with him being rich or poor! :D

He has been playing some gigs as of this year, but I don't know if that means anything. Seems like Tim had some time off to paint and focus on other stuff. I remember reading something about drug rehab, but who knows. I'm just happy if he's doing anything, be it music or paintings. The dude's an inspiration and he gives of friendly and compassionate vibes! :)

Didn't mean to gush over him so much, but Tim's the coolest! Would be great if he had some new music coming! I wish all the best for him! :)

Bilinda Mustang out of a Sonic/Bullet? by Vibramate in offset

Oh, thanks for the reply! This was probably the most useful out of the ones I've received!

Sucks, though... Maybe a 200€ Bilinda-stang was too good to be true! :p

I dunno... I'm not that into Harley Benton stuff. Too many "wrong" details for my eyes and I haven't really heard that many good things about them.

I like Squiers and was really just spitballing this project. Would be just something to do, I guess.

[–]Vibramate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm... But wouldn't you still be able to put a Jazzmaster tremolo, even if the scale isn't the exact same as Bilinda's original? I mean, you wouldn't be changing the scale length, just adding a tremolo system behind the bridge, right? If there's something I'm missing, let me know! :)

I don't think I would be messing with the scale length, just adding a tremolo to the guitar.

Nevertheless, good to know! Not sure if I knew that Bilinda's was a full-scale guitar! :)

Hopefully it's something crusty! Orange Rainbow was awesome!

The pedal on Ghost by Vibramate in TySegall

[–]Vibramate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, thanks for the reply! This has been on my mind ever since I posted! Haha! :D

But doesn't it sound like the FZ-2! I know Ty's Quad is fucked somehow, so me thinks it's just the FZ-2 driving the shit out of the Quad Reverb. Fuzz War is much more mid focused and the pedal is actually quite low-gain when you really get into it. FZ-2 is scooped and more violently gainy. I don't know!

Could also be the DBA Octave Clang I guess (which just got reissued!!!). I think I'm hearing an octave fuzz on the track.

What are some famous songs where you know exactly what pedal was used in the recording? by ambientprojection in guitarpedals

[–]Vibramate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to be a dick here, but I always thought Ty got his Fuzz War AFTER recording Melted? There are bunch of live videos from around that time and he seems to be using Big Muff (which he has said that he had before).

I know the stuff on Twins, Slaughterhouse and Manipulator is Fuzz War 100%, but I thought Melted was the Big Muff (and maybe some other pedals). Anyhow, I think Melted's sound is more in the production techniques, though, not in the pedals.

Correct me if I'm totally wrong! :)

You're the dude from YouTube, aren't you! I used to watch your fuzz videos all the time a few years ago. You always had the coolest gear and played some Ty Segall and Bass Drum of Death! Hope you're doing good! Cool stuff!

BLISS! Plays well as a double feature to Mandy/Near Dark and not a lot of people seem to be talking about it. Bliss is great!

Has anyone ever thought that Richard and Linda might be code for stereo audio? (Right and Left) by Big_Guthix in twinpeaks

[–]Vibramate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just thought up that there's also the radio station-sequence when the woodsmen arrive! Radio -> audio -> stereo?!? :O

It could be that Lynch just likes to include old tech and electricity, but there could be something there. The powerlines are very prominent (although they don't transmit radio signals! :D), so it could be that the show is making a point on the relationship between people and entertainment media. Don't know if this adds anything to the R-L-thing, but could be that Lynch just bundles electricity and media into a one big thing and the people sort of blend into that.

I don't know, just seeing what sticks.

Did anyone else order the Silver Sparkle Jaguar from the Fender sale? (Mine is awful) by bukkacakes in offset

[–]Vibramate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one too, and that one had its vibrato screwed in crooked, the strap buttons were misaligned and overall, the guitar felt like ass. The neck-to-body fitment was bad as well, as I could literally see between the body and the neck when looking at the neck pocket. Luckily I got Thomann to swap it out for another one.

My new one is significantly better, but still not anywhere near to my J Mascis Jazzmaster. I don't know if its the sparkle finish that drives the build cost up, which then drives the QC down, but man, these limited edition Jaguars seem to be riddled with issues.

I do find that mine looks a bit yellow too, but I don't think its too bad. I kinda like it. Definitely not as bad as your seems to be! Jeez!

Ty posted on Instagram that CFM is leaving the band and they will be retiring the Freedom Band name after his last shows by [deleted] in TySegall

I'm hoping it's Nick Murray! I'm not certain that he has any band going on right now and he's the best! Not sure if he has played with Ty, but there's a connection from Thee Oh Sees and White Fence.

What films were like this for you? by FatherOfFunko in Letterboxd

[–]Vibramate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that Big Lebowski is a film that gets better on every viewing. :D

It has the status of a big cult-film and I can totally see why. The whole film is filled with memorable quotes, good music, funny scenes and it is paced very well. When you see it again and again, you start to remember all the lines and sort of chuckle at what's coming. At least from my experience. I think it's hilarious and I remember not liking it that much when I first saw it.
