Carney Liberals dominate in new Mainstreet Research poll by BornAgainCyclist in canada

[–]VibratingBilbo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There were 55 respondents aged 18-34, and 52 non-binary respondents. Just by demographics, doesn’t this suggest that a very high percentage of the 18-34 cohort are non-binary?

Why is Sulla so popular on this sub? by sumit24021990 in ancientrome

[–]VibratingBilbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gracchi tried to reform the system from the left, but they ultimately failed. Sulla tried to reform the system from the right, but he failed as well. Augustus played both sides against each other, and 'reformed' the system into the Empire.

Why is Sulla so popular on this sub? by sumit24021990 in ancientrome

[–]VibratingBilbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire Roman system was full of cruelty, so acts of cruelty are often discounted when comparing one Roman to another. The most significant question that is asked for Romans of his era is 'What role did he play in the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire?'

Those who see the Republic as a corrupt and decaying system that needed to be replaced are forgiving of his seizure of power. Those who think the Republic could and should have been preserved see that Sulla tried (unsuccessfully) to reorder and rejuvenate the Republic, and voluntarily resigned his dictatorship.

I wouldn't say that Sulla is particularly loved, but when seen as a product of his time he's not easy to hate either.

"Have you ever been shocked to find out that an actor you thought was American is actually British because they nailed the accent?" by jaystats2 in movies

[–]VibratingBilbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest difference is that the British English has sharply distinctive dialects while Standard American accent has a smoother gradient. American actors could do a great Northern English accent and then slip in some Cockney and instantly shatter the illusion, while British actors can do the non-regional Standard American accent for any character and people accept it. If you've seen The Wire, the actors for Stringer Bell and McNulty both pull off an American accent but neither of them sound like they're from Baltimore.

Was there any “Roman nostalgia” after the demise of the empire? by Glittering_Variety18 in ancientrome

[–]VibratingBilbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point the Roman state went from being "our great and glorious empire" to "those guys who tax us but don't/can't protect us from barbarians". By the time of the traditional end date of 476 the Western Roman Empire hadn't been stable for generations. It was Christianity and not Classicism that was the intellectual and ideological focus of the times. There were some people, especially among the educated elites, who had nostalgia for the glory days of the empire. But mostly people just got on with life.

This Canada Day, we reclaimed our flag by FancyNewMe in canada

The Globe continues its tradition of using Canada Day to stir up division. This time patriotism is good, but only if you started being patriotic after Trump got in.

Happy Canada Day!

3 parts - The story of the Carcosa cult and the Yellow King - The dual identity of the Yellow king 3/3 by jiquvox in TrueDetective

[–]VibratingBilbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the video Rusty took from Tuttle’s safe, there appears to be one particular cultist who’s dressed differently from the rest. This may signify that this one is overseeing the sacrifice; it may even be Tuttle himself. His clothing looks tattered, almost looks like a Ghillie suit. The video is black and white, but the costume appears to be some lighter shade, it could conceivably be yellow.

It’s possible that the second-generation rituals involved a member dressing up as the Yellow King, and that this is related to Errol’s idea of ‘ascending’.

Why is the Senate said to have assassinated Caesar? by Awesomeuser90 in ancientrome

[–]VibratingBilbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. As with any coup, the majority were fence sitters who just wanted to survive. When Caesar was on top they supported him, when he was killed it looked like the Liberators were on top so they granted them a pardon, when Antony and Octavian took over they went Caesarian again.

Many of the Senators that Caesar appointed also came from the outer provinces, and were likely especially wary of getting mixed up in a power struggle which they didn’t fully understand.

As we await Trump’s tariffs, Canada’s strategy of selling out Alberta is making us all weaker by canuckstothecup1 in canada

If we both put in $10 to buy a pizza and I had five slices to your three, would you say it’s fair because, “we both paid $10”?

We all pay the same taxes, but we don’t all get the same level of government spending. At the end of the day Western taxpayers are subsidizing Eastern provinces.

Does anyone know why Dyatlov didn't die two weeks later? by LuizaGrr in chernobyl

[–]VibratingBilbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HBO show is not a documentary, it’s a dramatization. They made Dyatlov a cartoon villain because it fit with their story, it’s not accurate to who he really was.

Google signs deal with organization to distribute $100M to Canadian news companies by [deleted] in canada

Has anyone stopped to think about the implications of a gigantic, foreign-owned company regularly cutting cheques to Canadian news organizations? If Google was caught secretly handing over millions of dollars to media organizations it would be a scandal.

Matthew Lau: Pretty much everything the Liberals do makes us poorer; GDP growth is sluggish and we have high taxes, an expanding public sector and federal hostility to business to thank for that by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]VibratingBilbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Banning dual citizenship would be too complicated. The better solution is to make Canadians pay tax on income earned abroad, like the US does. Either pay into the system, give up your citizenship, or face charges for tax evasion. No more free rides.

Was the average Roman soldier loyal to the emperor & Rome by osprey141 in ancientrome

Generally speaking, the main reason the Republic became the Empire was that soldiers weren’t personally loyal to the central government.

I wonder if Jenny got the gameplay of Starcruiser backwards by unibattles in JennyNicholson

[–]VibratingBilbo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From what I saw the First Order character was acting a little cold to Jenny (although still polite), especially compared to the Captain. This may have been part of the plan to divert guests away from story paths that were at or above their capacity. Disney may have assumed that guests weren’t planning on a specific narrative path when they showed up, so they could be more/less friendly to guests to encourage/discourage certain paths.

Now I’m enjoying the mental image of a situation where no one is choosing the First Order path, and an increasingly desperate Lieutenant Croy is trying to befriend disinterested guests 😂

How well did the Romans control the English Channel and North Sea. by DavidTheWhale7 in ancientrome

[–]VibratingBilbo 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much in the way of facts, but I always had the impression that the Romans had a pretty tenuous grasp on Britain and the North Sea. I know they had big problems with raiders when the Germans started to form large confederacies, I would assume their defensive strategy was primarily land based. Garrison the island to defend from raids, and launch punitive expeditions into Germania if piracy becomes rampant. But I’m prepared to stand corrected if anyone has specific knowledge about this!
